Working toward a more informal hook, we have effected several changes: a new club section, in which each club is classified according to its activity, and a new arrangement of senior individual pictures. These and all other alterations were made with one goal in mindia book of memories to be cherished liy the class of 748 for all time. La Memoire Business Staff As members of the business staff of the yearbook, each of us knew his task. Our advertising campaign started immediately after school opened and as quickly as our staff could be organized. When the advertising began to show results, about the first of November, the subscription drive opened. Then we all had plenty to do. Each morning, each afternoon, and each night we were hustling in LA Ml-IMOIREZS business office. 309. We should like to express our appreciation and gratitude to the business men of this vicinity Whose loyal and sincere co-operation made possible the success of our advertising campaign and to the student body and faculty for their devoted support and response to subscriptions. T gf! PAUL E. XVITMI-DYER, Snpcrintcnclf-nt of Schools The Board of Education The Board of Education is elected by the citizens of the City of Xvilliamsport to administer the affairs of the Public Schools. They are primarily responsible for col- lecting the necessary monies to pay for their operation, to elect properly qualified per- sonnel and to adopt such educational policies which will constantly keep our schools functioning efficiently for the best interests of our boys and girls. The members of the Board of Education, serving without salary, devote a great deal of time to this civic duty. These men consider it a privilege to serve the young people in Williamsport be- cause they realize that the training and education which is received in a school system is of vital importance in developing good citizens for Yvilliamsport and our country as a whole. The Superintendent is the administrative ofhccr of the Board of Education. The Members of the Board and the Superintendent extend to each member of thc graduating class of 1948 best wishes and hopes for a successful and profitable career. PAUL E. We hope the training which you have received in our schools has, to some degree, equipped you for democratic living-that of meeting your opportunities as individuals and the performance of your duties as citizens. Some of these duties are to cherish our heritage, to promote the best interests of all races, creeds and colors, to hold fast to our spiritual values, and to maintain our faith in individual liberty and under- standing among men. The faculty extends its best wishes as you move on toward a larger life of chal- lenges and opportunities. L. F. The task appeared to be a series of difficult and perplexing jobs with little reward. However, I have learned that the job of being a class adviser has many unusual compensations. I have come to know many of you in a way that is seldom possible in the ordinary school routine. It has been fun to work with you-to plan our class activities-the parties, to choose and develop the Senior Play, to present the Class Day Pro- gram, and to select a commencement announcement in which your class colors were used on the school seal. In every one of the many details involved in your class activities, I have had the splendid co- operation of an excellent group of ollicers and their committees. Some of you have given many hours of service with a schedule already filled to overflowing with extra-curricular activities. It is with a deep feeling of regret that as you leave the halls of dear old high after commencement, our close fellowship will come to an end. I have watched you of the Class of l948 develop from boys and girls into young men and women who will, I trust, carry with you the same zeal and enthusiasm which you have displayed in the three years of your high school life. This is my most sincere wish for each of you--a life of adven- ture,. happiness and success-a life of unselfish service to your com- munity and nation to make this a better world in which to live. H. S. in '48 as sophisticated Juniors. We again welcomed Mr. Raymond Jamison as our class teacher. We were happy to have Mrs. Z. H. Confair and Mr. Clement Ladd as our Junior Class Parents. To them, and to Mrs. Paul Ritter and Mr. Floyd Mutchler of our Sophomore year, we extend our sincere thanks for their kind and generous help. Our first big thrill came when we were allowed to choose our class ofhcers for the first time. We elected Gene Wascher as president, Peggy Singley, vice president, Phyllis Campbell, secretary, and ,lack Lucas, treasurer. Football season started out with a bang and with our star players .lim Graham, .lack Boodon, Gene Wascher, Rocky Caringi, and Skip Stryker doing their best. While the fellows did their part on the field, the cheer- leaders, Beverly Little, Florence Irvin, and Polly Winters, helped to keep up the school spirit on the sidelines. Our Juniors also had an active part in the two new sports introduced this year. Dick Taylor and Floyd Web- ster came through, winning letters in cross country, Dave Rombro, Lee Springman, and Dick Lippoli showed their talents on the wrestling team. When basketball season finally rolled around, the Junior Class contributed its share of stars, with Jack Lucas, Mark Lindenmuth, Ed Ciofii, Gary Harper, and Bill Kiess helping to bring victory to the Cherry and White. Our class was well represented in the band and symphony orchestra. We showed our literary ability by publishing the Junior lssue of the Cherry and White. We all counted the days until our Junior-Senior Party held on Decem- ber 5, but the biggest event of the year came when we attended the Junior- Senior Prom in May. 60 'U' 1 9.1, r E QI 73-1 1'i1.,'5A v I J 'HH SS ELI'I.XN1IIl MAI.I.Al.I I I' Sopluunorm- Ulnss '1'v:u-lu-r MRS. S. to begin our Sophomore year. We were glad to have the help of Miss Eleanor Mallalieu as class teacher, and Mrs. Merl G. Colvin and Mr. J. Weymouth Morris as class parents. To them we give our heartfelt thanks for guiding us through the year. Football season rolled around and we were p 1'1m ud to have James Finn, Cookie Smith, and Walter llniski as some of the outstanding players. Jack Ameigh, ,lim Finn, and George Seidel also proved their ability on the Cherry and White basket- ball team. Three new cheerleaders from our class, Marian Strayer, Beverly Smith, and Barbara Karmatz, joined the squad. We displayed our literary and art talents in the Sophomore issue of the Cherry and Xvhite. Many Sophomores were mem- bers of the band and symphony orchestra. The big event of the year came with our Valentinels Day Party held on February 13 in the gym. At the close of this first year at W. W it tuclent Counci Student Council completed another year of service to our school. They smoothly ironed out our problems under the leadership of Jack Brennan, president during the first semester, and Gene Brong, president, during the second semester. H The purpose of this organization was to develop self-government and promote a spirit of co-operation hetween teachers and students. The committees-Publicity, Service, Clubs, Chapel, Civic, Social, Inter- School Relations, and Scholarship-worked hand in hand promoting such activities as Student Council dances, lost and found service, hroadcasts, col- lecting honor-key points, and checking coats for school affairs. The advisers were M. I. Quigley, Miss Lucille Gordner, Miss Miriam Lesher, Mr. C. F. Derr, Mr. John Kaiser, and Mr. Paul Cooley. 68 Cherry and. White ln spite of many editorial and financial difficulties six interesting issues of the Cherry and White were published during the year. Without the aid of the advisers, Miss Laubscher, Miss Geiger, and Mr. K. Miller, and the editor, Burk McNamara, the Football, Thanksgiving, and Christmas issues could not have been the success they Were. The Sophomore, Junior, and Senior num- bers, published during the second semester, completed the regular series of our literary magazine. The Cherry and White managed again this year to hold its own in state competition by being awarded a first place by the Pennsylvania School Press Association. Many thanks are also due Vince Campbell and his business staff, the journalism class, and the art staff for their part in making the magazine a success. 69 ri - Hi -Y Cluhs If it's social activity youare looking for, one of the Tri-Hi-Y Clubs is just what you want. Here youill find lots of opportunities to mix with other people and make many friends. To start things off with at hang they had initiation of Sophomores. ln the early part of the year the clubs got together for joint meetings, danves, and swims. ln order to develop the clubs, interests ir1 other Tri-Hi-Y organizations, representatives are selected to attend mid-winter conferences and the 'Wlodel Legislaturei' at Harrisburg. Whilst the memhers enjoyed the various functions, they kept in mind their main objective which is to promote higher Christian standards. 70 X N? .X x., xp I X Wm A w gf f' ,gs kwlfflm 9 Need any help in taking a good picture? If you do, just take your problem to a member of the Photography Club and your Worries are over. The members of the Senior-Junior Club, under the supervision of Mr. Muir, and those of the Sophomore Club, under the sponsorship of Mr. Metzger, learned to take better pictures, to develop and to print them. They also en- joyed talking over their many camera prob- lems. The Movie Appreciation Club did just about what the name suggests: Tried to rec- ognize the real worth and quality of moving pictures. With the help of Mrs. Harer, the members of the club criticized and discussed movies. lndividual eilorts were made to bring to the other members reports about outstand- ing movies. As an added attraction, the club made trips to the projection rooms of various theaters to learn just how they operate. They liked best of all to attend movies in a group. 71 After a year in the Field, Forest, and Stream Club one becomes Well acquainted with the crafts of hunters and fishermen. The club members learned much from speakers, movies, and field trips. The main thing Mr. Snyder taught them was the art of Hy-tying. tThe fish were bound to bitell Practice in shooting blue rocks helped them to become better marksmen. During the year a drive was put on to interest students in becoming junior lnembers of the Lycoming County Sportsmenis Association. Getting a closer view of Mother Nature in all her glory was the object of Mr. Lungeris Nature Study Club. The members got their closer View by going on hikes to study birds and fiowers, and listening to talks about the observations of others. After studying the stars they became familiar with the constella- tions and their movements. A week-end camp- ing trip, climaxed by a feast of fish caught by the campers, was the big event of the year. 72 S U ,V 9 , f tt t' 7' - fffgf . to 0--sexy , l AV ' lm' 2 X ,' r l f 't tt vp if it . if t X Mb!! it RNVM it X -k:v-T ' A All the noise and commotion you heard when you passed Miss Taylor's door was the Current Events Club debating on the Marshall Plan. At their less boistrous meetings they had quiz programs or interesting speakers, either students or outside lecturers, who dis- cussed current problems facing the world today. i Maybe you wondered why a certain boy was polite to you for a change. He must have been a member of the Etiquette Club sponsored by Miss Stout. Here one learned that chivalry is not dead and that girls prefer boys who know how to act in public. The boys and girls in the club learned the art of being good mixers and the essentials of becoming successful. 7 3 Have you ever wondered why a number of students were surveying the school grounds? No doubt they were members of the Math En- gineers, Club. They received instructions from Mr. Singley on the use of the transit in survey- ing, the use of the sextant in finding a ship's position, and the use of the level and the slide rule. For variety they heard reports on great scientists and mathematicians who were of special interest to them. In May the club made a trip to Bucknell to study the stars through the telescope. This year7s Chemistry Club was by far the largest and most successful one in many a year. About forty members enjoyed a very interesting group of programs under the guid- ance of Mr. D. W. Stuempfle. The club saw several scientific films. A number of interest- ing experiments were completed in the lab., the most notable of which was on the chemis- try of cosmetics. The members also visited local factories including the Confair Bottling Company and the Keystone Glue Plant. f 74 u X t 4 ww In f tt .,, t ,. He did this so that the future golfers will not find themselves confused when they are out of bounds, in water hazards, in sand traps, or in other predicaments, and so that they will know how to conduct themselves properly on the golf course. Later in the year they learned a few fundamentals of the swing by using the golf net in the gym and by hitting balls on the athletic field. Are you looking for a club composed of big, strong, athletic men? Stop! This is the page. You are gazing at the Gym Club and their director, Mr. Morgan. On the first and third Wednesdays of each month the forty-four members of this club burned up their energy in the apparatus room by turning flips in the air, hanging from bars, diving over the horse, and breaking their backs on the trampolene. In the spring the boys were willing to go on a less strenuous diet of baseball. I 75 The principal activity of the funior Rota- rians of the Williamsport High School, under the guidance of Mr. Heether, was to secure speakers to advise the students in choosing their post college careers. The ,lunior Rota- rians set up the Career Planning Program through which information about various oc- cupations could be obtained from prominent businessmen of Williamsport. For amusement they held a Weiner roast late in the year at the Sportsmen's Park after which they engaged in an exciting game of football. Our candy bar hucksters at basketball games were members of Mr. Rhoads, Pep Club. These hard working people also had the responsibility of raising money for sweat- ers for the six senior cheerleaders. At club meetings they heard speakers on athletics and had other interesting programs. ij! A W.. y 5 if 'ns . iies W 4? - -k. -,giliiigg I KET? X I, '- 'i ' I 5 ... . , rf f . - lu! If you happened to smell delicious odors coming up from the first fioor, it was probably the peanuts which the members of the Home Economics Club made and sold to the stu- dents. Miss Eleanor lshler showed them many fine points in cooking and homeniaking. The girls also enjoyed social meetings, hobbies, and field trips pertaining to the home. 77 , fm I. x' I The Debating Club under the guidance of Mr Cooley was organlzed primarily to arouse an interest in public speaking The goal of the club members in addition to merely giving speeches was to present lively debates on ar gumentatlve materlal ln order to do this skillfully the debater had to look up and study thoroughly the source of his material. The Dramalics Clubs spent the year bring- ing entertainment to the stage of W. H. S.- varied offering of mystery, comedy, and drama. The Sophomore Club, under the di- Aft If f- X gp -Mui - T IJ ii! rection of Miss Evans, made a study of one- act plays, the Junior and Senior Clubs, direct- ed by Miss Lesher and Mr. McCramer, respec- tively, presented their own original plays and reviewed other ones. 4 H '71, 78 Pupils who liked to dabble in paints joined Miss Ceigefs Art Club. As club members they created beautiful copper plaques and did some scratch-board drawings during the year. They met once a Week and had only one offi- cer, who collected club dues and assisted Miss Geiger. Students who had a unose for newsf, or oth- er literary inclinations, joined the newly formed Press Club. With Miss Laubscher as adviser, the club furthered their common inter- est. They listened to speakers, local newsmen and pupils, and discussed problems of publi- cation. In general, they became better ac- quainted with the literary world. 79 What was that strange language coming from 308? Why, it was the Spanish records and stories to which members of the Spanish Club were listening. Under the sponsorship of Miss lVlallalieu, the boys and girls learned Spanish customs and games. They also entertained speakers who gave interesting talks about Spanish America. On many days, sounds of lusty sing- ing issued from Room 204. ln addition to this favorite pastime the club interviewed sev- eral interesting people. jab tl 7 ., C, f wg ova ' f--N-is ,U sc-lim wi A , .0 i f Vx tux tlfg 5 Q, - -J I 5 , , o'5ZWZiS f. f . k ',w,iK13l lofiihv sg AX v I If ' M0116 80 an Q I Wx Q S6 , A, Q y ' l li, L, . Of course, Miriam Wilkins never dreamed that writing to lonely service men to keep up their morale would cause any difficulties. As a matter of fact, everything would have been fine if only dashing Lieutenant William Seawright had not come to the Wilkins home seeking the author of the correspondence which he had received. Miriam had not only signed her letters with Ruth, her sister's name, but had also sent Lieutenant Seawright her lovely sister's picture. Complications began to set in rapidly when the remaining Wilkinses met and liked the young lieutenant. In the meantime Ruth had decided to marry Albert, her prim and proper beau. Matters would not have been quite as bad if Bill hadn't been so completely captivating that Ruth fell seri- ously in love with him. Naturally she couldn't ruin his short furlough, and possibly his life, by tell- ing him the truth: but Miriam, running true to form, eventually confessed all. Things were kept lively, too, by Bill's sister Martha, who was reunited with her love, Bill's friend, Chuck, of the air corps. Then there was Dora, the family maid, who could always be relied upon to laugh at Judge Wilkins' jokes, which every one else, especially Mrs. Wilkins, thought very boring. The end looked happy, though, with Ruth ditching Albert for Bill, and Judge Wilkins per- forming the wedding ceremony. This, by the way, turned out to be a double wedding, for Martha and Sergeant Chuck Vincent were also married. All looked happyg that is, until Harold Klobber- myer, another of Miriamls correspondents, made his appearance, asking for Ruth. Our imaginations took us from there. 82 l DO ra .... ........... MIS. The Millionaires looked good to everybody. Enthusiastic followers predicted a great season for Cherry and White, and school spirit soared high. Then came the slump. The beating we took at Lancaster, 49-7, was the most severe suffered by W. H. S. in two hundred twenty-nine games. But our gridders put the nightmare behind them, and settled down to iron out their many mistakes, feeling that it was just one of those thingsf' As the next two games were to be at home, everyone's hopes were high, and we still thought we'd be tough to beatf' It was a blow when we suffered our second straight loss to John Harris, l3-0, but we derived some satisfaction from holding Harris the second half. Save for a touchdown on the third play after the opening kick-off, we might have tied the game. Cherry put up a pitiful showing when she bowed to a poor Penn team, 14-7. At last it was becoming doubtful whether our team could win another game. The Altoona Mountain Lions powered their way to an 18-6 triumph that was con- siderably more one-sided than the score indicates. It must be admitted that they showed supremacy in all departments of play over the dispirited Millionaires. Our goal posts went down, and Lock Haven fans made merry when they con- quered Williamsport 20-7 for the iirst time in fifteen years. It was getting hard to take. It was with a feeling of relief and resignation that we met our last foe, Steelton, who defeated us 45-0, our seventh defeat in a row. Anybody can be exultant over continuous victories, but it takes true sportsmanship to remain in good spirits after continual defeats, which are definitely more dishearten- ing to the team than the fans. At Altoona on May 13, Williamsport was defeated 69-64 in the closest event of the season. The battle for the District Four title 011 May 17 was the only home meet. Williamsport lost to Mt. Carmel 67-60. ln the state meet on May 24, District Four came in seventh. The team took third place in the Coaldale lnvitation Meet on May 30. The following boys competed in the fourteen events at the State College track and field meet: high hurdles, Harold Stroehmanng 100 yard dash, Ed Painton and ,lim Finn, mile run, Ken Wagner, mile relay, Dave Taylor, Al Winters, Don Webster, and Art Keene, one-half mile relay, Cookie Smith, Art Keene, Stan Winner and lid Paintong 440 run, Jim Finn, 880 run, Buzzy Lewis, 220 run, Ed Paintong pole vault, Stan Winner, high jump, Bob Stine, broad jump, Cookie Smith, discus and javelin, Herb Snook. The highlight of the season was Bob Stine's 5 foot 1116 inches stadium record high jump in the Ninth Mt. Carmel lnxitation Meet. Cross The Cross County Team got off to a flying Country start at W. ll. S. when the Cherry and White har- ricrs defeated Xlount Carmel 22-23 on October 21. A week later at Mount Carmel, they were less successful, losing 24-31. On November 5 they went to Lock llaven State Teachers College for a practice meet with the freshmen. ln the State Meet on November 15. Williamsport came in sixth. lt l 92 , fe J I Golf The W. ll. S. golf team had a hard-luck season, losing all their matches, but they did their lwst for the school. The team had four meets: State College, home on April 25, and away on May 9, District 4, home on May 163 and the State Tournament, on May 23. Bob Smith and Tom Allegrucci represented District Four in the State Finals on May 2-1. Tennis The Williamsport Tennis Team, coached by Mr. LaRue Williamson, barely kept its head out of water. This, however, is no reflection on the team or the coach. The lmoys had only three practice periods, large portions of which were spent in going to and from the courts. The team played the Hrst match at State College lligh on April 25, howing to their opponents hy a score of 6-1. A return match was played at the Yvilliamsport Tennis Clull courts on May 9. This match was stopped hy rain with Williamsport leading 4-3. Since W. H. S. is the only team entered in District Four, the team went to the State Meet on May 23 where the doubles team of Hunter and Mullet advanced to the quarter-finals and was defeated 5-2 hy the state champions. 93 Wrestling Wrc-slliug: was introclucccl as a varsity sport in W'illiamspo1't High School this yuar.
