We pause for a moment to pay tribute to those of our number who made the supreme sacrifice in this war against the forces of evil and aggression. We honor all who in any way contributed to our victory. To the future with its responsibilities we look with confidence. Today the common interest, the common thought, the common hope that stirs the minds and hearts of the peoples of all United Nations is to achieve a just and durable peace. We look to the day when all peoples throughout the world may live free lives untouched by the forces of tyranny and intolerance. We well know that war means action, fighting and dying. Too often we assume that peace means quiet, rest and complacency, but actually peace involves effort and struggle. We must he on the alert, we must fight for peace continuously, invoking the principles of justice, toleration and truth. The strength and future of America depends upon the willing- ness of each one of us to accept the responsibility of citizenship and to play our part as alert citizens of our community, state and nation. Boa rd of Education To THE MEMBERS or THE CLASS OF 1946: Your senior year has been one of momentous happenings - a year unprecedented in history. It brought an end to a bloody and horrible era of history. World War II proved that the American educational system is highly effective in developing human beings. The manner in which the product of our American schools performed during the war should remove any doubt as to the quality of Young America. The soldiers of no other nation exhibited such effective teamwork. Their ability to use highly complicated mechanical equipment of all kinds was superb. No other soldiers were more adaptable to widely varying weather conditions or demonstrated greater courage or sheer physical stamina than ours. Their understanding of the issues at stake and their high determination to bring those issues to such a conclusion as would preserve our American way of life were most significant. The battle flags have been furled. Our men in uniform are coming home, having finished the gigantic job which they set for themselves. Peace is the order of the day. But peace brings us many new problems. These problems challenge the best thought of the civilized nations. Their solution requires intellectual, moral and spiritual leadership. To this leadership it is our hope that your training has made a worthy contribution. To this end may you find inspiration and guidance in the following lines written by Longfellow 1 Were half the power that hlls the world with lerror, Were half the wealth bestowed on camps and courts, Given to redeem the human mind from error, There were no need of arsenals or forts. You are commencing a new life after graduation. The world is hopefully beginning a new era of peace. You have attained graduation by work, perseverance, and sacrifice. The world has won peace by sweat, blood, and tears. An abundant life resulting from well done jobs, discriminating friend- ships, discerning marriages, and vigilant planning can lie ahead of you. It is for you now to use the tools and experience acquired during your school life as a surety and security for that life. A lasting peace for the world can be assured if you will contribute your ideas and your efforts. They are essential for final victory. We are thankful to have seen the end of the global war in 194-5. You have helped to win the conflict with your work in the bond drives, air-raid patrols, and salvage collections. During these anxious years-wistful days of hope and prayer and separations from loved ones in the armed services- it was inspiring to work with you. You were always thoughtful, co-opera- tive, and worked with a happy attitude. We at Williamsport High School will miss you. Think of us often, we shall never forget you. Now that we have completed our first two years of high school, we find that we have many pleasant memories to look back upon. Five hundred and ninety of us started here in our sophomore year. When the junior year began, our number had dropped to five hundred and three. During our first year we welcomed Miss Mary Louise Taylor as our Class Teacher and Mrs. Williamson Webster and Mr. Robert Fowler as Class Parents. They, with the help of the Party Committee, planned our Sophomore Party, which was given as a Valentine Party on February 9. This year our Class Parents, Mrs. William Updegraff and Dr. Robert C. Little, with the Senior Class Parents and Teachers, planned for us the Junior-Senior Party, which was held December 7, and the Junior-Senior Prom, which was held on May 24. This year was the first year we elected oliicers to represent our class. Our officers were Dick Ramin, president, Eleanor DeTurk, vice president, Joan 0'Brien, secretary, and William Lamade, treasurer. These officers, with the help of our Class Teacher, appointed sixteen students for the Junior Dues Committee, sixteen for the Junior Welfare Committee, and nine for the Junior Executive Committee. Ten of our Junior boys were on this year's unbeaten football team and twelve on the basketball team. Helen Kresmar, Mary Emily Rosencrans, Mary Louise Holland, and Lois Flook were on hand with the rest of the cheerleaders to help our team to victory. Our class issue of the Cherry and White, published in March, was edited by Drew Bluemle, Cynthia Cooper, Ted Mullet, Ella Mae Seitz, Bruce Freed, and Murray Grove, under the direction of Miss Florence Laubscher, Miss Miriam Wendle, and Miss Mary Geiger. GETGEN Sophomore Ulass Father ll Far back in September six hundred and twenty-one of us sophomores found ourselves entering the doors of Williamsport High School for the first time. Well, maybe we didn,t exactly Hnd ourselves, because for quite some time the halls and confusing stairs had 'us really upside down. The first real news we heard about ourselves was that Mr. llruce H. Winter had been appointed Class Teacher by our principal, Mr. L. F. Dcrr. Shortly after, Mrs. Harold P. Fahringer and Mr. Russel T. Cetchen were appointed Class Mother and Father by the Parent-Teachers Association. When the football season started, there were eighteen sophomore mcm- bers on the team. The outstanding players were Bill Dugan, Pat Kelly, Pete Fortner, Jack Peters, Don Emig, and Cordon Leidecker. On the basketball team we placed nineteen. Again Bill Dugan, Pete Fortner, ,lack Peters, and Pat Kelly managed to get positions on the varsity. Helping to lead the cheers at all of the games were Janet Brion, Doris Ogden, Sara Winters, Marilyn Levitt, and ,loan Strayer. Our class colors, by the way, are navy blue and powder blue. Participating in broadcasts were Marilyn Levitt in a Book Week Quiz Program, Charles Sweeley as an announcer, and Joan Hoshauer reading the Bible. Ann Grieco, Peaslee Hoskins, Dorothy Closser, Donna Pfieffer. Anna ,lane Hessert, Catharine Brown, Doris Menzing, and Rose Ellen Holmes also took part in a broadcast. Francis Williamson was on several broadcasts as a pianist. On the stall of the sophomore Cherry and White issue in April wc had 25 members, and seven leaders put the magazine to press. The night of all nights finally came on January 25, the night of the Sophomore Mid-Winter Party. With the aid of the Williariisprmrt High School 'lMerr,ymakers,', a stage show, and refreshments, everybody had a good time. Altogether, our first year at high school has been a happy and eventful one. This year, with no particular theme, the book is presented to you in a truly informal style. Many more varied and amusing candid shots are included on the new memory pages. We have tried to make the club pictures true to life in their own familiar settings. Another new feature instituted this year is the standard cover design which will not be subject to Change from year to year. This was done so that the Williamspcirt High School would have a unique design which no other school could use. The job of the members of the business staff is to raise the needed funds. ln order to do this the staff puts in many more hours of hard work in securing sub- scriptions and soliciting advertisements from the local mer- chants than you realize. Headed by Richard Sedam, editor-in-chief, and .leanette Tysar, business manager, the regular staff edited four issues and each of the lower classes took its turn in publishing class issues. This year the P. S. P. A. Regional Conference was held at Lewisburg with many Cherry and White staff members attending. In the P. S. P. A. annual contest, Cherry and White ranked first in the news magazine group. Twelve W. H. S. students won individual first awards. and thirteen received individual second awards. Much of Cherry ami Whilefs success could not have been achieved without the advertising and circulation secured by the business staff under the leadership of ,lane Yoder, advertising manager, and Constance Nevill, circulation manager. Con- siderable credit also goes to members of the Art Department for the important part they played in keeping up 'aCherry and W'hite's,7 traditional standards. 68 Student Council The Student Council has rendered another year of faithful service to the school. This worthy organization planned and carried out its various activities during the first semester under the leadership of Dave Kintzing, presidentg Patricia Lentz, vice presidentg ,leanne Holland, secretaryg and Lynn Overdorff, treasurer. Officers for the second semester were Dave Kintzing, presidentg Jean lVlclVlurtrie, vice presidentg Jeanne Holland, secretaryg and Edwin Cearhart, treasurer. Miss M. l. Quigley, Miss Lucile Cordner, Mr. C. F. Derr, and Mr. G. H. Gramley, faculty advisers, offered their ahle assistance. This yearis work was successfully guided by the chairmen and inemhers of the following committees: Q Publicity, Service, Cluhs, Civic, Social, lnter- school Relations. and Scholarship. Under the direction of Mr. Osborne L. Housel, our ninety piece band has become one of the best organizations of its kind in the state. This group of talented musicians entertained spectators at the football games with its marching and excellent playing. The band has also fur- nished music for basketball tournaments, broadcasts. P. T. A. meetings, and other civic occasions. The mem- bers work hard throughout the year preparing for the annual Band and Symphony Orchestra Concert, a pro- gram of classical, semi-classical, and popular music. The band members deserve the praise they receive for their fine performance. 70 Symphony Orchestra Our symphony orchestra is a well-balanced organization of seventy pieces. Under the direction of lVlr. Osborne Housel, it has played for broadcasts, civic affairs, P. T. A. meetings. chapel programs, and the Baccalaureate Service. The climax of the year's program was the Band and Symphony Orchestra Concert. Dance Orchestra The dance orchestra, consisting of thirty-live members, furnished popular music for school functions. Forward LaRue Bush, Guard Wesley Myers, Center Jack Peters, Forward Carl DeI'asqua, Guard 91 Track l This year's track team, sparked by the returned lettermen, Ben Stebbins, Ron Davies, Steve May, and Bill Pfleegor, started the season with a third place in the llenn Relays at Philadelphia. A few weeks later Coach Decker's squad defeated thc State College Lions by a score of 67-42. Billtown lost the next three meets by very slight margins. To wind up the season, an unheralded Williamsport High School track and field team scooped top honors at the stale meet with a total of 23M points. Tennk Donald Fiorini, Harold Fahringer, Donald Hecker, Owen Landon, Jr., Bruce Freed, Dick O,Brien, ,lim Johnson, Jack Holmes, and Donald Armsby comprised the l9f115 tennis team. Try-outs for l946 were held early in March and later practices were continued at the Lymehurst courts. LaRue C. Williamson, coach, prepared the squad for two matches with State College, one away and one at home. We won both of them, with scores of 4-l and 7-0 respectively. ln the play-offs for the state championship, Owen Landon, Jr., reached the semi-finals. 92 Cheerleaders A squad of nine cheerleaders led the cheers during the l9-15-l94f6 footliall and lwuslwtlulll season. Ol these, five will graduate at the end of the second semester. This year the cheerleaders attended all of the out-of-town 5.'QilIllf'S. They also helped with the pep meetings held before every home game. ln addition to leading the yells, the cheerleaders inake up new cheers and help to promote hetter school spirit. Golf Under the direction of its coach, lVlr. H. L. Harer, the golf team started practice in lVlarch at the Xvilliznnsport Country Club. lt entered three tournaments: two with State College. one of which was tied and the other lostg and the District 4 P. l. A. A. tournament, in which the championship was won by John Trayer. 93 Senior Class Play You Can't Take It With You You Canit Take It With You, a mad farce, by Moss Hart, and George S. Kaufman, was presented in the school auditorium April 11-12 by the class of 1946. Grandfather Vanderhof, whose philosophy is Mhave fun now 'cause you canit take it with youf' presides over his hectic household, where snakes, Russians, ballet dancing, and printing presses are not out of place. Alice Sycamore, the only '4sane member of a family in which the mother, Penny, has been writing novels for eight years, the sister, Essie, practices ballet dancing, the father, Paul, manufactures fireworks in the cellar, and the grandfather owes twenty-two years' back income tax and wonit pay it because he doesn't believe in it, falls in lovc with Tony Kirby, a young man from a staid, wealthy family. Alice, recognizing the difference between her home and that of Tony, begs her family to put all snakes and fireworks in the cellar on the night when the Kirbys are to come to dinner. Tony makes a near fatal mistake by bringing his family to call the evening before the designated one and finds the Sycamores spending a typical evening at homef, When the curtain falls, Tony has accepted his bride-to-beis eccentric family and the Sycamore family continues to live life in the fullest sense of the word. 94 Paul Syeamore .....
