Board of Education Graduation! Commencement! These are the events ou have been ointin toward Y P g for the last three years. Now that they are here, there come the inevitable regrets-the severing of many intimate associations and friendships, the loss of kindly advice and guidance of teachers. But who would turn back? Ahead are to be found the unsolved problems, the solutions to which will require great sacrifice by your generation. But freedom and libert must be reserved. America is countin on her oun' men and Y P S Y fa oun women to carr her throu h this crisis. The will not fail. Y 8 Y 8 Y Many of you, Seniors of the Williamsport High School, will be called upon to serve your country in some way. Whatever becomes your part, we believe you are equipped with the necessary tools for a creditable performance. If to these you add courage, deter- mination, and faith, this nation under God shall surely have a new birth of freedom. With you go our best wishes and our confidence. WILLiAMsPoRT ScHooL BOARD. STUEMPFLE Dirwtor of XVilliamsport 'IH-'1-luiiirul Institute Assistant I'rim'ip:x1 As we approach another graduation in war time, we are keenly aware df the responsibilities which await you when you leave these'halls. In a practical sense, if not technically, Commencement means the beginning of citizenship in community and nation with its attendant duties. Years ago when the youth in Athens, Greece, reached this point, they were inducted into citizenship with impressive cere- monies which concluded with their taking this solemn oath: I will not disgrace the sacred arms, nor will I abandon the man next to me whoever he may be, I will bring aid to the ritual of the state and to the holy duties both alone and in company with many. I will ircmsnzif ll'lj!l1dfil'L' f0mmonwc'alflJ not lesscwezl, buf larger and beffcr Haan I lmzfc' rc'- reived it. I will obey those who from time to time are judges. I will obey the established statutes and whatever other regulations the people shall enact. If anyone shall attempt to destroy the statutes I will not permit it, but will repel him both alone and with all. I will honor the ancestral faith. May you encourage a philosophy of mutual understanding, personal integrity and responsible citizenship. The best wishes of the faculty to the Class of 1945! L. F. DERR. 12
