In a practical sense, if not technically, Commencement means the beginning of citizenship in community and nation with its attendant duties. Years ago when the youth in Athens, Greece, reached this point, they were inducted into citizenship with impressive cere- monies which concluded with their taking this solemn oath: I will not disgrace the sacred arms, nor will I abandon the man next to me whoever he may be, I will bring aid to the ritual of the state and to the holy duties both alone and in company with many. I will obey the established statutes and whatever other regulations the people shall enact.
