In a practical sense, if not technically, Commencement means the beginning of citizenship in community and nation with its attendant duties. Years ago when the youth in Athens, Greece, reached this point, they were inducted into citizenship with impressive cere- monies which concluded with their taking this solemn oath: I will not disgrace the sacred arms, nor will I abandon the man next to me whoever he may be, I will bring aid to the ritual of the state and to the holy duties both alone and in company with many. I will obey the established statutes and whatever other regulations the people shall enact. DEWALD A Trusted Frie cl On June 6, 1944, occurred the death of Mr. Omar DeWald, one of the most beloved faculty members of Williamsport High School. As a member of the English Department since 1938 and as the editorial adviser of LA MEMOIRE for four years, Mr. DeWald contributed much to extracurricular life at Williamsport High School. Our basketball stars were james Wliite, David Barnes, Carl DePasqua, and Henry Perciballi. Diane Mellish, Norma jean Bruno, Barbara Earnest, and Dorothy Yarrison, cheerleaders, did a good job of adding zest to the football and basketball games. Our class parents, Mrs. George Parkes and Mr. Harrison Hang, were introduced to us shortly after we elected class officers. They, with the Party Committee, the senior class parents, and both the class teachers, planned the junior-Senior Party, which was held January 19. Our class issue of the Cherry 111111 While, which appeared March 2, was edited by Barbara Bowman, Eleanor Cattron, Jeanette Confer, Carolyn Cook, Eddie Gearhart, Jeanne Holland, Mary Isabel Jackson, Diane Mcllisli, Richard Sedam, and Lucy Tre- mayne, under the direction of Miss Florence Laubscher, Miss Mary Geiger, and Miss Miriam Wendle. The issue was distributed by seventeen junior members of the business staff, under the direction of Mr. Kerr Miller. Our Sophomore issue featured an unusual theme, The Supernatural. Richard Sedam served as editor and Jeanette Confer as associate. About thirty-five juniors added their talents to the instrumental organizations of W. H. S. while seventy sang in the Glee Club. Near the end of the term came the annual Senior-Junior Prom. The gym was decorated with the class colors, rose and gray, and our own, aqua and yellow. Four of our boys-Paul Kolb, Bill Corner, Leland Thomas. and Glenn Edmonds- took additional work during the summer and first semester in order to graduate this year. During the year some of our classmates joined various branches of the service so that as our Junior year came to a close we had lost to the war effort too many of the 554 class members with whom we started our Junior year. 61 MHS. Until we became used to the labyrinth of halls, we were continually getting lost. If we ventured up the wrong stairs, we were greeted with taunts of Little Sophomuresln Wlieii we heard that Miss Mary Louise Taylor was to be our Class Teacher we were very happy, for, although we had been in high school only a short time, we had learned enough to know that we were lucky to have her as our adviser. Witlm the 62 CLASS OF 1947 appointment of Mrs. Williamson Webster as Class Mother, and Mr. Robert Fowler as Class Father, came the certainty of excellent guidance in our high school life. In football, our classmates, Scott Frear, Dick Ramin, Bill Heckman, George Hunts- man, and Bob Shaffer have shown themselves to be promising gridiron performers. john Perroto, Frank Kmctz, Dick Ramin, and Dick Kintzing have won recognition as up-and-coming basketball players. When the present cheerleaders have graduated, Carolyn Atkinson, Mary Louise Holland, Mary Emily Rosencrans, and Lois Flook, members of the Class of 1947, will be on hand to cheer our teams to victory. We have brought in milkweed floss and tin cans, bought Defense Stamps and Bonds. and saved Waste paper in our homes. Besides, we have helped relieve the shortage of clerks in the downtown stores by giving up some of our spare time to help the few remaining clerks supply the demands of hurried Christmas shoppers. In general, we have cheerfully participated in the war effort to the best of our ability. After suffering through the mid-year examinations during that fatal last week in January, we were rewarded by the Parent-Teacher Association with a Valentine Party on February 9. Altogether, our first year in Williamsport High School has been a happy and eventful one. In war time some of these diificulties become insurmountable. This year our book had to be sent to press much earlier than editions of previous years-thus some spring activities usually included had to be omitted. We have tried to maintain the standards of the yearbooks published in normal times and at the same time meet the conditions imposed by war-time restrictions. The aim of the staff has been to present a book which in years to come will bring back memories of our good old high school -days. To make this book a success, funds in addition to our own sub- scription money are needed. This is the job of the business staff who must personally see representatives of all the local business firms. However our LA MEMOIRE could never have been a real success without the Whole-hearted co-operation of the student body, the business firms, and our adviser. 67 Cherry all ite This year the Cherry and Wbifc staff has continued the high standards of its predecessors under the supervision of its able advisers, Miss Florence Laubscher, Miss Miriam Wendle, Miss Mary Geiger, and Mr. Kerr Miller. Under the leader- ship of Charles Chamberlin, Editor-in-Chief, and Glenn Williamson, Business Manager, the staff put out six unusual issues of the Cherry and Wbife, with the Juniors, Sophomores, and Seniors taking their turns at magazine publishing. W. H. S. again played host to the P. S. P. A. Regional Conference. Due to rationing Towanda could not entertain as scheduled so the P. S. P. A. asked Williamsport to take over again. In the annual contest sponsored by the P. S. P. A. the Cloerry and Wfaiie placed first in the magazine class and received third prize for its War-Effort Scrapbook. Jean Alpert, jean Farstad, Helen Louise Pechter, Dorothy Hayes, and Jean Long received individual awards. Much credit for the Cherry and White success is due to the extensive cir- culation and advertising campaigns conducted by the business staff under the direction of Owen Landon, Jr., Advertising Manager, and Rose Martinozzi, Circulation Manager. Likewise, we would like to say thank you to the Art Department for the atmosphere they added by their artistic Cuts. Thus W. H. S. has demonstrated that the freedom of speech and the freedom of the press are worthy of their utmost endeavor. 68 Another year of successful work has been completed by the Student Council, one of Williamsport High School's most worthy organizations. Student Council functioned the first semester under the leadership of Robert Adamy, president, jean Alpert, vice president, Helen Wright, secretary, and Robert Unger, trea- surer. Officers for the second semester were Robert fdamy, presidentg Lois Yarrison, vice presidentg Prudence Waldeisen, secretary, and Jack Holmes, treasurer. Miss Lucille Gordner and Mr. G. H. Gramley were appointed new advisers to assist Miss Marguerite l. Quigley and Mr. C. F. Derr. The year's work was ably guided by the committee chair- men and assistants of the following committees: Service, Civic, Interschool, Scholar- ship, Social, Club, Chapel, and Publicity. The monthly Student Council dances were highlighted by a Leap Year Dance in December. This year clubs were organized and the honor key points of all classes were collected much earlier. Thus Student Council continued its high standards in loyal service rendered to the school. 69 Student Counci The Band One of our most active extracurricular organizations is the ninety piece band directed by Mr. Osborne L. Housel. This group of hard-Working musicians has gained state-Wide recognition for their fine marching and excellent playing. This year the band, in addition to playing for football and basketball games, participated in broadcasts, chapel exercises, bond rallies, P. T. A. meetings, and other civic functions. The musical climax of the school year was the annual Band and Symphony Orchestra Concert, a program of classics, light classics, novelties, and solos. 70 Symphony Orchestra Under the direction of Mr. Osborne L. Housel, our symphony orchestra of over sixty pieces practices from August until June. This organization of hard-working student musicians plays for school broadcasts, the Baccalaureate Service, and the annual Band and Symphony Orchestra Concert, which is held in the spring. Dance Qrvheslra Under the baton of Mr. Housel, the thirty members of the dance orchestra have provided entertainment for Student Council dances, class parties, and junior high school hops as well as for broadcasts and chapel programs. They have also presented special programs for various organizations in the city. 71 Senior Glee Club The Senior Glee Club was composed of seventy-two girls and boys. At the end of their junior year, about one hundred students tried out, but only those having good scholastic standing, good vocal range, and the ability to read music were selected. Two rehearsals a week were required. Under the direction of Miss Kathryn M. Riggle, this group formed the nucleus for our singing in chapel and rendered the vocal numbers for the Baccalaureate and Com- mencement programs. Highlights of the game were the touchdowns made by Bill Stebbins and DePasque, and the two good placements kicked by Ben Stebbins. SEPTEMBER 23 - Home. WILLIAMSPORT 415 WEST HAZLETON 0. In this second game of the year the Stebbins brothers starred by piling up huge gains on their end sweeps. Ben stole the show by making three tallies to his brother's two and by completing five out of six placements. DePasqua made one touchdown, bringing the final score to 41-0. SEPTEMBER 30 - Away. WILLIAMSPORT 6g HAZLETON 2. The team came through with its first hard-won victory of the year. Bill Stebbins pushed across the tally in the second quarter after a forty-yard march to the five-yard line. Hazleton threatened in the last quarter but was held for four downs on the four-yard line. Making only three fewer first downs than its opponent, the Cherry and White team had its first taste of defeat for this season. WILLIAMSPORT 12g ALLENTOWN 19. In a heart-breaking game with Allentown, W. H. S. went down to a nineteen to twelve defeat. High point of the game was the spectacular eighty-five yard run for a touchdown made by Bill Stebbins. NOVEMBER 11 - Home. WILLIAMSPORT 339 WILLIAM PENN 0. Billtown, rolling over the William Penn eleven, came back for its seventh win of the season. The Stebbins brothers made four tallies and Wilhelm made the fifth. De- Pasqua's passes, Bernstine's line smashes, and White's three successful placements brought our total to thirty-three. NOVEMBER 18 - Away. WILLIAMSPORT 265 ALTOONA 0. W. H. S. avenged some old scores by defeating Altoona in her own back yard. Vandegrift went over thc line for two touchdowns while Bill Stebbins and Wilhelm each made another. Billtown wound up the season in glory by defeating its arch-enemy, Steclton. This year, the first fall practice ever held, promised an up-and-coming team and perhaps an equal or better record than that of last year. The 1944 team won first place in the Penn Relays, first place in the District 4 P. 1. A. A. Meet, victory over State College High School, first place in the Triangular Meet: Pottsville, Mt. Carmel, and Williams- port, and iifth place in the State P. I. A. A. Meet held at State College. Tennis The 1945 tennis team was chosen by elimination from the following group: Owen Landon, Jr., Donald Hecker, Harold Fahringer, Donald Armsby, Robert Decker, Jack Holmes, Dick O'Brien, Charles Towar, and Donald Fiorini. In March the first work-outs were held in the gym but later practices were held on the Memorial Park courts. Under the supervision of Mr. L. C. Williamson, coach, the team was prepared for the meets at State College, Bloomsburg, and Harrisburg. 88 CIIGGTICHACTS This year nine girls have led the cheers at the home football and basketball games. Of these nine, five will be graduated at the end of the second semester with the honor of having led the cheering all three years they were at high school. The five are Dorothy Boyd, Joanne Bodle, Mary Ellen Groover, Ann Trayer, and Betty Lou Peterman. Because of war-time travel restrictions the cheerleaders did not go to many out-of-town games. Nevertheless, under their leader, Mary Ellen Groover, they were kept busy teaching the student body many new cheers. of 89 Senior Class Play THE MAN WHO CAME TO DINNER A hilarious three-act comedy by Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman, was presented April 12 and 13 in the high school auditorium by the Class of 1945. Sheridan Whiteside, radio critic, wit, and idol of all clubwomen, comes to dinner' at the Stanley home in a small mid-western town, slips on a piece of ice on the doorstep, and breaks his hip. A tumultuous confinement of six weeks follows with the Stanley living room and library monopolized by the invalid, his strange friends, and his equally strange gifts. When Ma ie, Whiteside,s eflieient secretar , falls in love with the small-town news- gg Y paper reporter, Bert Jefferson, Whiteside, fearing the loss of Maggie, calls on Lorraine Sheldon, a glamorous actress, to break up the romance. Just when Lorraine is winning Bert's affections, Whiteside forgives Maggie and tries to get rid of Lorraine. After Whiteside succeeds in reuniting Maggie and Bert, and in disposing of Lorraine, he triumphantly leaves the Stanley home.
