The 1941 LA MEMOIRE staff presents this yearbook to the student body, faculty, friends and patrons of the Williamsport High School hoping that it may serve as an adequate record of school life for the school year 1940-41. To our classmates we especially trust that this book may prove a source of interest always, and may it help you in the remote future, to live again the three years we have lived and loved here together. H- IIEIIIIIATIU To MISS ETHEL C. COLLIER, whose personal interest and implicit confidence in us have inspired our best effortsg and whose splendid achievements and beautiful character have won our respect and love, the staff of the 1941 LA MEMOIRE respectfully dedicates this twenty-first edition. W Zflfvf Notes From the Principal The annual Grab Bag was staged for the eighth time in November of the present school year. This production, which was started in 1933 in an effort to raise funds to finance the Williamsport High School Band on a post season football trip, has developed until it now includes four hundred and fifty students. Eighteen teachers cooperate in working out the various skits, acts, dances, and musical accompaniments. The slogan, Twenty-five acts for twenty-five cents, which was adopted the first year, has continued to be used in the advertising and in the central idea or character of the entertainment. The primary purpose of this exhibition is to discover and develop the unusual talent which is found among the student body. The acts are as varied in character as the talent of the boys and girls who produce them. The program is so cleverly arranged and staged that usually the master of ceremonies is the only one able to tell the nature and the order of the acts. To say that this student activity is one which replaces worry lines with laugh wrinkles is no exaggeration. This unique, original show is generally sold out one week before the time for its staging. It is held on Thursday and Friday nights and each of the sixteen times it has been produced, standing room has been at a premium. The public seems to enjoy this evening devoted to fun and frolic, and many people come annually from other towns to witness this performance. Great credit is due to the teachers who spend many extra hours with the students in preparing them for another successful entertainment. It is hoped that the Grab Bag, with its cross-section of student activity, may continue to be successful in the years to come. 8 Goals of the School Board The School Board of the School District of the City of Williamsport congratulates the Class of 1941 upon the successful completion of their training as offered in the Williamsport Public Schools. We name you ''baccalaureaten-crowned with laurel. That crown is now merely a nominal one. Through the coming years you may earn for yourselves one which will not fade. That crown must really be of laurel and not of gold. It must be the crown of what you do-not what you gain. You will soon join in the task of building a better community-a better world. We have given you the tools with which to work. How you will use them is for you to learn. We know you will not fail in courage, in energy or in acquired skill. These have been the tools of every generation. But, if at life's other end you would wear a crown of laurel, you must use these qualities for the permanent good of your fellowmen. You must give thought to those moral and spiritual values by which all human progress must be weighed. WILLIAMSPORT SCHOOL BOARD 9 The Faculty BLANCHE P. BALLIET, A.M. I had my misgivings as to the success of the undertaking, doubts as to my being able to carry it on to a successful conclusion. Today, however, I can look back with a feeling of pride and satisfaction on the way you settled yourselves to the tasks to be done, knowing my efforts would have been in vain without your prompt obedience to instructions and rules laid down. I very much appreciate your willingness to work for the good of the class and your hearty cooperation in anything I asked you to do. Your accomplishments during your high school years have been many and variedg moreover, there seemed to be a desire among you to make a success of the job and you can rest assured that your action in this respect was a source of joy and pleasure to me. Since you entered to learn, now you go forth to servef' it is my sincere wish that your service will redound to your own beneHt and that of your community, and to your country. fake! ' Senior Class Play June Mad, a rollicking comedy of modern youth, directed by Mrs. Elizabeth Reed Mann, was presented April 18 and 19 in the high school auditorium. This play by Ryerson and Clements concerned Penny Wood and Chuck Harris, the boy next door, as they went about the frequently difhcult, but always amusing business of growing up. When Penny's Uncle Mervyn, only five years older than she, brought Roger Van Vleck, a killer-diller, home from college, she forgot to be a man-hater and succumbed to an attack of calf love which was ten degrees worse than measles. The discovery that Roger was double-crossing Mervyn by stealing his girl brought her back to normal and, incidentally, to Chuck. This very superior show was highlighted by Millie Lou's constant pestering and by Julie Harris' fatal charms. 16 Penny W'ood .. Chuck Harris ,. Millie Lou G. Junior Class History At last we can hear the yell, Sophomore!', and not blush guiltily and wonder Am I going up the wrong stairs again? Yes, indeed, now we can give the little sophs the benefit of our superiorf?j knowledge as to which steps to use when going up, the quickest way to get to a certain class, or how to get a better seat in chapel. Early in the fall we, the class of 1942, organized for the first time in our high school career by electing Dan Cornwell, president, Kathryn Bosch, vice president, Bette Cummings, secretary, and Fred Cornwell, treasurer. The new officers immediately started their work by helping Mr. Russell H. Rhoads, class teacher, appoint the Executive, the Dues, and the Welfare committees. By the middle of October W. H. S. was on its way to a bang-up football season with Max Conley, Jerry Switzer, jim Lamade, Les Crossley, Adolf Tagliaferri, Ray Stover, and Bill Steumpfle adding a few laurels to the junior class crown. The gym was brightly lighted while the Cherry and White rooters cheered like mad as some of our illustrious members-Merlin Stabley, Dick Galetti, Mellard Christ, and Ray Stover-brought home the bacon to wind up one of the most successful varsity basketball seasons in school history. The budding senior class brought a magician and a clay modeler to town for the annual Junior Benefit which was held November 21. Two other committees, the ticket and the publicity, were appointed to help put the show over. Meanwhile, Eleanor Young and Mary Grace Reher had won the junior shuflleboard championship in the girls' intramurals. By February 19, the girls' basketball was finished with both home room 303 and home room 319 declared the winners, for both teams had been tied during the entire tournament and had tied in the play-offs. Then Mr. Rhoads with Mrs. C. A. Sutliff and Mr. William C. Wagner, class parents, and the high school P. T. A. planned a delightful junior-Senior Valentine Party for February 15. The gym was attractively decorated with red hearts suspended from the ceiling on white crepe paper and banners with 1941 in maroon and gold, senior class colors, at either end of the room. Downstairs, the dining room was all in red and white-white tablecloths with red hearts on them and red hearts drawn on the blackboard. The well-drilled Cherry and White band which paraded at all the football games has among its members about 30 juniors. The newly-formed color guard consisting of Helen Frances Haines and Maxine Whiteman added a note of individuality to the maneuvers of the band. Acrobatic majorette, Anne Mae Miller, astonished visitors and students alike by her skill on the Held. Our issue of the Cherry and Whiten published March 7 was based on the theme, Pan-America. The 67 members of the junior staff were headed by Herbert Beam, junior editor-in-chief. May-one of the biggest events of the school year, the Senior-Junior Prom, was held in the gym. The decorations were in maroon and gold, senior class colors, and blue and gold, junior class colors. So ends the second chapter in the history of the class of '42 at the Williamsport High School. As a whole this year has been a successful one, but we hope to do even more ncxt year as dignified seniorsv and as the guide and inspiration of the classes of 1943 and 1944. Lucius WILLIAMSON, '42, 60 RUSSELL H. RHOADS Class Te-miller MHS. C. A. SITTLIFF Class Mother NVILLIAM C. YVAG Nlilll Class Father Sophomore Class History Struggle with the elements--this terminology was appropriate in describing the state of dilemma which centered about the sophomores on the opening day of school. The elements in this particular sense were not wind, water, or heat, but principally the prejudice against sophomores and the unfamiliar atmosphere and surroundings of Wil- liamsport High School. After the first trying weeks, the class began to adjust itself to the environment and with formulation of the Color, Dues, and Wel- fare Committees, set up an unexcelled foundation for future activities. At the controls of the class were Mr. C. Robert Snyder, Class Teacher, ably assisted by his co-pilots, Mrs. A. E. Farrington, Class Mother, and Mr. W. P. Bachman, Class Father, the navigators of the destiny of the Class of 1943. The Christmas holidays were superseded by our first solo and mass flight-the Sophomore Class Party. The setting for this colorful social event was the Williamsport High School Gymnasium, and every sophomore will vouch for its success. Nor can it be said the sophomore class lacked brain or brawn. The bearers of our class colors, scarlet and gold, in the stadium and gymnasium were the football players, Fred Wright, Tom Hinkelman, and the cage stars, Don Crossley, George Bruner, Paul Trost, and Wilbur Engelman. The girls who offered proof of our athletic prowess were Frances Fink, Vivian Stutzman, and Ann Carter. As we gathered speed and all parts began functioning smoothly as a unit, the chief fruits of our efforts were the Sophomore issue of the Cherry and White and the Sophomore radio broadcast. As we finish the last lap and Zoom down into the homestretch of the 1940-41 term, the class of 1943 has won its wings and is eager to carry on its epic-making flight till its ultimate destination is reached. Changes have been made in this book at the suggestion of the members of the student body and Class Teacher. With the completion of this year's annual, the staff believes that it has taken another step forward in respect to quality and appearance. No doubt, the cooperation between the faculty adviser and the members of the staff, with the splendid support of the student body, has made this a successful year for LA MEMOIRE. Few readers realize the time and salesmanship required of the business staff in obtaining the advertisements and subscriptions which are necessary to publish our year book and make it a success. A vote of thanks is also due the student body and the business men of our city whose splendid sup- port has made our year book possible. 67 La emulre Business Stafl X 1'vKiI5' NVilli:unsou JIIIIIPN Mnllvvnl Murgzllerito Gr-hrmi .Iuvk SfI'illll1'I'3I Jenn Sc-itz:-r NVil1ium llussvll Marvin RlHlll1Slii I4I4lu'in Witmzln Cherry and White June, 1941, brings to a close another year of success and honor to our High School Cherry and White. Fine literary writings, superlative art work, and complete news coverage under the direction of Miss Laubscher, Miss Geiger, and Miss Wendle contributed to the success of the magazine. Edgar Link was editor of this year's magazine, in which the silk-screen art process was introduced. This year also marks the beginning of a mimeographed Sapliment, containing supplementary material about school life and doings. Following the light Fall issue and the more sober Thanksgiving number, were the silk-screen covered Christmas issue, and the Junior Pan-American copy. The Sophomore Spring issue came next, and the year closed with the Senior Commencement issue. Again the Cherry and Wbiie came through to win a first place in the nationwide Columbia Press Conference for magazines of its class. Staff mem- bers also received prizes. Congratulations to the art, literary, and journalism staffs-and to the business staff for its intensive student drives and its efficient handling of advertising and circulation. May the color and honors of the Cherry and White grow even brighter as the years pass by. 68 Student Council For another year the Student Council, under the direction of Mr. L. F. Derr, Miss M. L. Taylor, and Miss M. I. Quigley, has carried on its tradition of serving the school and promoting fellowship and cooperation between teachers and pupils. This organization functioned under the able leadership of its presidents, William Russell and Herbert Kocher, who filled this office during first and second semesters respectively. Other officers for the first 'semester were Dotty Springman, Alicelee Baker, and Michael Bernardi. The second semester incumbents were Richard Galetti, Joyce Stabley, and Wil- liam Russell. The council sponsored informal dances in the gymnasium. These were the means of bringing students together for good times and at the same time furnished money to meet the financial obligations of the council. Check room attendants, ushers for various public performances, and guides were furnished the school by council members. Another outstanding feature of the Student Council was the regular Thursday morning broadcasts which exhibited a great deal of student talent. A new committee was formed this year for the purpose of promoting a greater unity between the home rooms and the Student Council. The Student Council has had one of its most successful years and feels that the organization is indeed a credit to the school. 69 Football Williamsport 41, Jersey Shore 0. The Millionaires packed far too much power for their traditional foe as they crushed the Orange and Black in the opening game of the season. Williamsport 14, Hazleton 0. A fighting Williams- port team out-passed, out-smarted, and out-ran last year's conference champions in a decisive victory-showing a very formidable Williamsport defense. Williamsport 20, York 0. After a scoreless first quar- ter, Coach Pursell's well-oiled gridders moved swiftly to continue their march forward toward an undefeated SCHSOI1. Williamsport 20, Sunbury 7. Gpposed by an aggres- sive Sunbury team, W. H. S. was faced with a 7-0 score in the first half, but retaliated in the second with three bril-- liant touchdowns to chalk up another victory for Billtown. Williamsport 14, Lebanon 7. Taken off their guard by an under-rated Lebanon team, Williamsport faced a tie 70 lirst Row, Lei' Adolph Tagliuferri, Bud Zauer, Marshall Jennings i Suomi Row---Georgre Svliraumn, Joseph De-Gre-gnrio. Williamsport 0, John Harris 7. The Millionaires suf- fered bitter defeat for the first time this season at the hands of the John Harris gridders, ending the march toward an undefeated season. Williamsport 20, Scranton 0. The ability of a team to come back again to a great victory after being knocked down was shown by the W. H. S.'ers as they won a decisive victory over Scranton. Williamsport 25, William Penn 7. The Pursell eleven tamed the Capital Tigers as it annexed its seventh victory, although the members did loosen up in the last half. Williamsport 21, Sayre 0. The Billtown team were expecting an easy game in the breather with Sayre, whose defense was stronger than anticipated, but whose offensive was no match for the Cherry eleven. Williamsport 6, Steelton 20. On a field which had been cleared of two feet of snow, Williamsport lost its Turkey Day game to a superior Steelton aggregation. 71 t to Right--Boll Brenner, John Dive, Jim Lmmule, Howard Stublev, Bill Gurvernk Basketball WILLIAMSPORT 20, HAZLETON 17 The Millionaires started the season with a very close game with the once mighty Hazleton team. Al- though both teams played a shabby brand of ball, the fighting spirit of the W. H. S. team was ever present. WILLIAMSPORT 33, ALLENTOWN 27 In the first game ever played with the Allentown Canaries, W. H. S. won with even greater ease than it had against Hazleton. The main reason was that the attack was vastly improved. WILLIAMSPORT 39, SUNBURY 33 The Sunbury game was closer than was expected after the two preceding victories. The failure to roll up a higher score was traced to a lessening of pressure by the W. H. S,'ers plus unexpected resistance from the Owls. WILLIAMSPORT 29, HAZLETON 26 Williamsport won its second victory of the season from the Hazleton team. It was a methodically fought gamvthe tide being turned so many times that the outcome was uncertain up to the closing min- utes. WILLIAMSPORT 28, STEELTON 51 After four successful games, Billtown crashed to the first defeat. A secret of the Steelton success was constant shooting. This game was one of the worst defeats in recent cage history. WILLIAMSPORT 34, POTTSVILLE 25 Pottsville surprised every one by stepping out with an 8-3 lead in the first period and it took a speedy change in the Williamsport lineup to correct the trend of battle. WILLIAMSPORT 24, SHAMOKIN 18 After three luckless periods, the Millionaires struck up a fast searing pace which made up for the lead which the Shammies had gotten. Shamokin rang the bell with a much greater frequency than Williams- port until the last period. WILLIAMSPORT 35, ALLENTOWN 42 In the return game with the Canaries, W. H. S. was unable to accomplish what they did in the first. Only in the Hrst minutes of play did the Poustmen show any outright advantage. WILLIAMSPORT 46, SCRANTON TECH 26 The Millionaires put the game in cold storage emerging from the first quarter with a 14-2 lead. Marksmanship of the locals both at long and short range was particularly brilliant. WILLIAMSPORT 32, ALTOONA 42 The Altoona team resorted to a long range bombardment which allowed them to get the jump on the Cherry and White team who played excellent ball on the whole but who just couldn't match the long game of the Maroon. WILLIAMSPORT 23, SCRANTON CENTRAL 25 With a great rally in the last few minutes of the game, Scranton Central overcame a five point W. H. S. lead to turn in a 25-23 victory. Although the local quintet held the lead all the way through, they could not hold Central down in the last period. 72 Front Ilnw, Left to lligllt--Allen Urorlcr-f lhlilrialuerl. Ilolu-rt Forrest WILLIAMSPORT 31, SUNBURY 22 For the first time in the season, Williamsport saw all four teams in action as they disposed of thc Sunbury quintet who were sadly lacking in offensive ability. WILLIAMSPORT 35, STEELTON 32 In one of the most thrilling contests ever staged on a local floor, W. H. S. and Steelton waged a battle reminiscent of the old Central State League battles. Field goals in the last three minutes picked up at il time when Steelton was pressing its hardest and pulled the game out of the fire. WILLIAMSPORT 31, POTTSVILLE 32 An improved Pottsville team knocked the pins from under the Millionaires who were deiinitcl cold Y in-so-far as their marksmanship was concerned. Not until the end of the fourth period did they regain their long stride, but in vain. WILLIAMSPORT 36, ST. JOSEPH 23 With a defense too strong for the St. Joe quintet, W. H. S. played superior basketball once it found an opening. Unable to shake their players loose the Catholic High School bowed to the strength of the Poustmen. WILLIAMSPORT 36, SHAMOKIN 31 A sudden acquisition of foul shooting technique bids fair to carry the Millionaires far. A flying start and a fine performance all the way through were the major factors in the Williamsport triumph. WILLIAMSPORT 59, SCRANTON TECH 16 Packing the most potent wallop of the year, the Millionaires wrapped up Scranton Tech to the tune of 59-16. This victory eclapsed any of the previous accomplishments in the 10-year-old series with Tech. WILLIAMSPORT 48, ALTOONA 28 This triumph, number thirteen in eighteen battles, removed the stigma of the 42-32 defeat at Altoona in the first game with them. This game provided a suitable and glorious climax to the successful campaign for Williamsport. WILLIAMSPORT 50, RALSTON 19 The first district 4 game was played in the Dickinson Seminary Gymnasium. Williamsport played good ball all the way through and being much stronger than Ralston won with no great elfort. WILLIAMSPORT 44, SHAMOKIN 25 The second district game was played on the Bucknell University Gymnasium. It was the third defeat of Shamokin by W. H. S. for the season. Williamsport played a snappy game and came through on top. WILLIAMSPORT 56, WELLSBORO 33 Although Wellsboro had had twenty-four consecutive victories, W. H. S. came through with flying colors and won the District 4 championship. This game was played in the Mansfield State Teachers Col- lege Gymnasium. WILLIAMSPORT 17, LOWER MERION 27 The last game of the season was played in the Palestra of the University of Pennsylvania. Although W. H. S. kept up to and at times led Lower Merion, they weakened in the last quarter, losing all chance for state championship. 73 Track With five lettermen, Weigle, McCarty, Stover, Falk, and Shetler, re- turning to form the nucleus for this year's squad, the 1941 cinder squad shows signs of having a good year. The relay team competed in the Penn Relays and the District 4 Meet. Other contests scheduled are with Lock Haven, Bloomsburg, Mt. Carmel, and the State Championship Meet. M volleybali-1941 The W. H. S. volleyball team won the District 4 P. I. A. A. champion- ship by defeating Bloomsburg 15-1, 15-2 and 15-2, 15-12, after Bloomsburg had defeated Mt. Carmel 15-4, 15-3. At State College, the Cherry and White won their first match from Knox, 15-6, 13-15, 15-10, but lost to Lancaster 5-15, 15-3, 15-11 in the semi-finals. M Swimming Team The varsity swimming team competed in the Eastern Regional Swim- ming Meet held at Lafayette College, Easton, Pennsylvania. M Tennis Prospects for this season are extremely bright, with the above players composing the team.
