The dictionary defines the word school as a place where instruction is given, but most Williamsport students would consider this definition wholly inadequate. It is within these walls that the better part of four years of our .lives are spent. It is in these class rooms and corridors where we find lasting friendships, enjoy new experiences, and, quite frequently, absorb a few facts along the way. Although studies take up much of a student's time, there is always a little left over in which we manage to squeeze other activities. There is always something going on which is guaranteed to keep each actor, musician, artist, athlete, joumalist, or politician busy from dawn to dark. In the 1954 GOLDENROD we have tried to present a picture of both sides of student life, not only of a study which is so important to the student, but also of the honest- to-goodness fun of belonging to a school group. 1525 I' ' 1 ' '. But the prophecy for U54- goes beyond the realms of this world to a greater peace or torment. With these few words I introduce you to- THE SENIOR INFERNO OF 54 ' It all started one day when I called my old friend Mar- garet Gross in the Senior Inferno. She asked me down and since I'd just gotten my new wings I decided to go. Imagine my surprise when she had arranged a welcoming committee and a little party of our former classmates. Heading the welcoming committee was Lucifer's right hand man, none other than Billy DeMumbrum. He won this high position by taking candy from his former classmates and little kids. On our way to Mig's house fShe is the social chairman of the Infernoj, we passed the furnaces and there shoveling coal like mad was Charles Boyle and Jim May. When I asked why they were down here, Billy fwho was acting as my guidej told me that it was because of what they did to Mrs. Smith, their Senior English teacher. After looking back to that English class I decided they had gotten their just dues. Soon we arrived at Mig's house and after fond em- braces had been exchanged the party began. After looking over the crowd it came to me with quite a shock that some of my classmates were absent. I asked Mig about Rosie Reed. June Phelps, and Jeannie Cox. She told me that Lucifer had chosen them to be chief tormentors and they couldn't get off for the party. Part of the afternoon amusements was a complete tour through the Inferno. It wasn't long until we ran into Rosie, June, and Jeannie. Their victim was Dean Hughes. When I asked why of all my former classmates should Dean be singled out for extra punishment I was told that it all came from his mad desire to break girls hearts. This rather puzzled me for I thought Lucifer should gladly welcome someone of Dean's uh traits? Mig immediately set me straight on this. It seems as though Lucifer had welcomed Dean to the Inferno, but Dean couldn't leave well enough alone. For his most heartbreaking conquest he had to pick Lucifer's favorite daughter. Some people never, never learn. Next we came to a very official looking building. Going inside I saw what seemed to be a laboratory. Hearing voices further down the hall I decided to investigate. There I found Joe Oursler and Jerry Jacks. Jerry told me that he and Joe were chief inventors of the Inferno. And that they were working on a synthetic form of ice water for all the suffering souls. It suddenly came to me that their interest in scientific matters must have sprung from their Chemistry Class back d old Bingy High. About this time Jo proudly a X q that hile still on eart had in vented a tiff er? just for the tea g rg f Bingy High. But then I suppose four sets of twins would take their toll. While still on earth I guess there was quite a race to see who could have the most, but when the end finally came they were tied with four sets apiece. I was surprised to find the Inferno went in so for sports. I found that their basketball coach was John Swanson. I hardly recognized him, he had lost so much weight from his previous years on the furnaces. The tragedy of the class, was Jim Ritter. Of course you know he originally went up and was given the job of gate keeper while St. Peter was busy elsewhere. Well it seems as though on this particular day St. Peter came back sooner than was expected, to find Jim asleep on duty. When I heard this I was quite surprised as Jim..was always so wide awake in class back in good old Bingy High??'? Poor .lim was deported along with Don Beaman, Bob Beardsley, and Bob Markley. It seems as though St. Peter didn't appreciate their poker game either. Lenora Cronkhite is still chief story teller in Heaven. At the present she's telling the newer angels the story of her many Monkey Meat hunts. fWhile on earth Lenora spent most of her time as an explorer in the dark continentl. Something the whole dass should be proud of is the fact that in our era of time Shirley Brooks and her high school sweetheart Bob Zenor have been chosen to stand with the all time great lovers of ancient years such as Romeo and Juliet, Mark Anthony and Cleopatra and John and Pricilla Alden. Oh yes, just as all the world loved a lover so does all of Heaven. Though in different spheres Jim Short and Barbara Foster share like duties. Barb keeps the Angel wings in heavenly order and Jim, well since he's been in the inferno. Lucifer's pitchfork is shinier than ever before. Maurice Reynolds is an author of a sort, he writes the Sunday sermons. His experience must have come from editing our senior yearbook while still in good Bingy High. Well this ends our classmates in the Here After so I think I'll look in on the three left on earth. Adjusting my wings I took off for earth and landed in Hollywood, Cali- fornif. There I found Burly Bob McLain. Even after all these years he's still tops in Hollywood. I'll never forget the year he took Hollywood by storm. I can still see his na e in lights. He was billed as Bingy's Little Egypt. W ile lying around Hollywood thinking about Bob I saw ' an ne Jernagen and Martha Walder. She and Martha ure charge of the Costume and Make-up Departments. when I was in my prime in the City of Glitter no one, and I do mean no one, but Martha and Jeannine could please me. While still on Earth, I though I'd run up to my old Alma Mater. As I was standing across the street reminiscing that everything was just as I had left it-still no gym-out popped Mr. Johnson, my former class sponsor, still taking pictures with the camera the class of 54 left Bingy High. Well by this time I had to start back to Heaven. As I took my last look at the Williamsport High School, I couldn't help but think that despite the thoughts of the faculty, the Senior Class of 54 turned out pretty well.
