The farmers, therefore, are the founders of human civilization. Daniel Webster FFA Since last spring our Chapter has been very active. In April, 1959, we undertook a tree-planting project. Trees were set on the Gerald Smith farm by the Chapter members. Lyn Daggett made a planting on his father's farm. These projects are undertaken as a community service and to further the work in soil conservation which is so urgently needed. From this practical work, the boys themselves benefit in a learning experience. In May Covington served as host for the county-wide dairy judging contest. The farmers in the surrounding area participated by letting us judge their cattle. James Andrews scored the highest number of points in our Chapter. This gave htm a chance to go to Penn State as a member of the Tioga County judging team. During the same month, we participated in a county-wide soil- judging contest at a farm near Mansfield. Eugene Bartholomew was the highest in our Chapter and was sent to Penn State to enter the State Contest. This spring we were selling seeds for Tri-State Seed Company of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. We were working under the same contract as last year. Any boy selling S60 worth of seeds got an FFA jacket. David 'Wilkins won a gold medal award for his fine dairy heifer project. The FFA affords its members opportunities for fun and friendship, but more important, it furnishes the programs which challenge its members to learning and higher acheivement. 3 1 President....... ....David Wilkins Vice-President.... ....Robert Adams Secretary....... ....Ronald Palmer Treasure....... ....Robert Weaver Reporter.... ......Wilbur Allen Chap1in..... ...La Vern Friends Sentinel.... ....James Andrews Advisor... ......Mr. Synder First Row: Warren Courtright, Mr. Snyder, Ronald Palmer, Melvin Cummings Second Row: La Verne Friends, David Wilkins, James Andrews, Robert weaver, Douglas Updyke Third Row: Lyn Daggett, Robert Adams, Nolan Heffner, Wilbur Allen Richard Jones, Ronald White Fourth Row: Eugene Bartholomew, Philip Gee, Theron Andrews, Kenneth Sheive, Richard Bartholomew, Larry Jones, Allan Knapp !,:s in .1 .S N' W 0 -kg TURE al ER ,M e e , FARMERSK A CT p xafiydgk tit! Charles Stout 4 L MAY DAY 5 1959 6 Q ' X M fr' 1 . , A ,Q . ,V g . Lois Courtright, Nancy Warner, Joyce Kipferl, Donna George, Weldon Bliss, Sheila Adriance, Joan Goodwin, Susan Aeillo Following tradition, Williamson celebrated its annual May Day Festival on Friday evening, May l. Before the event, seven girls had been chosen by popular vote to be on the court. One girl was chosen queen and her identity was kept secret until the occasion. Follow- ing the election, the winners received a flower to wear as a mark of identification and of honor. The evening began with the procession of Maypole Dancers who were gaily dressed in pastel skirts and white blouses. Two blithe elves led the May Court to their platform, which was decorated with an arbor of flowers that created a springlike atmosphere. The May Court members looked lovely, carrying colonial bouquets and wearing new tiaras. The identity of the queen was finally revealed when Donna George was crowned by Weldon Bliss, president of the Senior Class. The girls were seated after the coronation so that they might enjoy the enter- tainment presented in their honor. The first part of the program consisted of the traditional wind- ing of the Maypole by the Maypole Dancers. Afterwards the Girls Chorus presented an operetta,'The Gilbert and Sullivan Revue,' which was very interesting and colorful. Four of Gilbert and Sullivan's operettas had been combined to form an unusual story, and the chorus, which played the female roles as well as the male roles, made a good appearance as fairies, sailors, pirates, sisters, cousins, and aunts. This was a new venture for our chorus and not only was well produced, but was well received. Following the operetta, a recessional march of Maypole Dancers, the May queen, and her Court concluded the program. In the corridor, the Court formed a receiving line so that they might receive their families and friends. , 5 HX ' if ' 1 Williamson High School is extremely proud of its music departmenn During this year, the members of the various organizations of the department have participated in many memorable events This year, for the first time, our marching band took part in a Halloween parade which was held at Lawrenceville Both the members and the spectators enjoyed themselves on this occasion In December, a Christmas program was presented by the members of the Junior High School Band and Chorus and a number of members of the jUD10r high who portrayed the musical playlet, HThe Twelve Days of Christmas The program was well received, and the work put into the program was appreciated by all Music 18 the unlversal MUSIC DEPARTMENT language of mankind Longfellow A great deal of thanks 18 due to our Pep Band whlch supported our team at almost all the home games The1r playing and cheering greatly boosted the spirit of all and added to the enthusiasm d1splayed at the games In expressing our appreciation, we cannot overlook such organ1za C1038 as the Dance Band, which played at several Youth dances, and the and assemblies throughout the year The Senior High School Band and Chorus presented their sprlng concert in April The Choral numbers included many from several Broad way shows when the audience expressed 1ts approval and appreclatlon, the participants knew that their time had been well spent Our march1ng band part1c1pated 1n many events last su mer and is now looking forward to this su mer s act1v1ties Attendlng the Laurel Parade at Wellsboro was a real treat, and the band members are 8DC1C1 pating another such event this year The year has been very full of activitles, but all the members of the muslc department feel that their efforts have been well recelved by others and they themselves have profrted greatly ll Brass Ensemble and the Trumpet Trio, who took part in various programs . . . . i ' ,, F 5 .P -- . ul, gil w,4gAg'1 1 M. 1 ' .A . 3 M1 Y CHOIR First Row: Carol Knight, Esther Kepple, Dawn Swanson Second Row: Sarah Brown, Patricia Thall, Jane Hymes, Beverly Faulkner Third Row: Carol Schott, John LaVancher, Larry Van Druff MIXED CHORUS ,--Q' First Row: Christine Swanson, Carol Knight, Claudette Butler, Patricia Ball, Karen Gilbert, Helen Bartlett, Dawn Swanson, Connie Short, Linda Young Second Row: Esther Kepple, Sarah Brown, Nancy Adriance, Susan Brown, Carole Carleton, Michaele Curry, Marleah Sheive, Ann Wales, Margaret Jones, Beverly Faulkner Third Row: Mrs. Lunn, Susan Tobey, Shirley Miller, Judith Wales, Elaine Rudneski, Dene Steadman, Jane Hymes, Connie Seelye, Danna Griffiths Fourth Row: Donald Buchanan, Patricia Thall, Mary Simcoe, Carol Schott, James Bradshaw, John Lavancher, Barbara Peterson, Diane Taft, Virginia Heck, Judith Adriance, Crawford Holmes Fifth Row: Jon Cooper, Kenneth Kepgle, Larry Van Druff, Benjamin Casbeer, Dale Hoyt, Fred Lavanc er, Richard Jones, Louis Aiello CHRISTMAS PROCRA The Christmas Program, with its many delightful song and dance facets, was given by the Junior High School music group The Twelve Da s of Christmas, a musical playlet, employed Clarice Brennan as the Tady, I ice Brant as the lord, Mary Deming as the messenger, and Nancy Friends as narrator DISTRICT CHORUS Larry Van Druff, Sarah Brown, Carol Knight, Esther Kepple, Dawn Swanson VOCAL TRIO Dawn Swanson, Esther Kepple, Carol Kn1ght all i--91 C R t 'Fl .bu r ,H ,My . B A L L Willia son's 1959 Baseball Team proved to be one of the best on the school's records. nHustle and More Hustlen was the motto which gave the Warriors 7 victories in 9 ga es under the team's new pilot, Larry Jones. Strong power on the mound and timely hitting and speed on the base paths made the team a formidable foe. The highlights of the season were the shut-outs of Liberty and Cow- anesque in the same week by fireballing Norm Wood who previously had been used in relief roles. Dave Balch proved to be a work horse on the mound with his superb control and all-around steady performance. The power hitting of Morley Knopp and Jr. Fye coupled with the timely clutch hitting of Dick Steadman and Jim Andrews posed a constant threat to opposing moundsmen. Speed merchants Bob White and Morley Knopp kept opposing teams constantly off balance by their base-stealing. Ken Harrison, Bob Gee, and Bob Brennan turned many base hits into outs with their fine glove work and hustle. This was the first year at the helm of the Williamson nine for Coach Jones, and he was extremely pleased with the team's hustle, spirit, and desire to win.
