RAY FYE Congratulations to the Class of 1958: You, the Class of 1958, have had the advantage of the educational program offered you by the state of Pennsylvania and your local joint school district. It is my sincere hope that you will find use in your economic, social, and political life for the work you have done in school to acquire the understanding and skills for successful living. The challenges of today are greater than ever. There is no place for those who feel they can make no contribution to the welfare and progress of mankind and resign themselves to effortless, purposeless existence. Though the saying is old, the experience of life proves that one gets from school or life in proportion to what one puts in it. May you be well rewarded for your efforts. Between plays musical entertainment was provided by Barbara Gee, Dennis Harrington, and Martha Watkins. HTell It To The Moransu, the first play, was the story of a father who finally decided that he would much rather have fourteen sons than four daughters. One daughter needed a husband, two daughters needed more clothes, and the youngest daughter needed a laboratory for her bugs! The play ended happily with the oldest daughter getting married and leaving the other three daughters with some hope for their dreams. , HThe Greener Grassn was a heart-warming picture of the typical American family. They envied friends who had nice clothes and a nice car, spent the winter in New York, and had no children. After a visit from their nhappyn friends, the Wright family decided that the grass is not always greener in the other fellow s yard. The third play,HCasanova, Jr.H, starred a teen-aged Romeo. Typical of every day life, he was not satisfied until he had found himself about to take three girls to the same dance. He had to admit that his technique was too good. Although we realized that the work would be more difficult and the assignments longer, we resolved to do our best. On November 13, we received our long awaited class rings, and for the next two weeks we spent most of our time showing them to lower classmen. In the fall we sponsored.a Harvest Dance. Although many were not able to attend because of the Asian flu epidemic,we who were there enjoyed our- selves very much. Our class was well represented in athletics, baseball, basketball and soccer.Three Senior varsity cheerleaders were members of the Junior Class. Many of our class members were also in the Gym Club. These are the two periods of the week when they are allowed to express their emotions--in music, whether it is an overture, march, novelty, or the more modern jazz. This year the band and,m8ny of its members have taken part in various activities. On April 18 and 19, David Burris and Donna.George represented the band at District Band at Coudersport. May and June fgund the band taking part in May Day, and Commencement. The band also made several summer appearances last year. Among them were: Lawrenceville's Old Home Day, Tioga's Old Home Day, and Fourth of July celebrations at Mansfield and Millerton. The big highlight of the year for the band was the concert which was presented March 28. This gave all band members the feeling that their time at band practice had been worth while. Another branch of our band is the Pep Band. Consisting of Z8 members, this organization showed us its talent at basketball games and pep rallies. Student directors were Yvonne Button and Fred LaVancher. This ear our band members were proud to announce that they have new drums, symgols, and a banner for Marching Band. Thus the year '57-'58 contributes to the history of our Concert Band, Marching Band, and Pep Band. Wilfrid Wildon Gibson We are very proud of the largest organization in the school, the chorus. We are divided into three groupszthe Mixed Chorus, Girls' Chorus and a special choir. The true spirit of Christmas was brought to Williamson December 19 when the combined choruses presented HThe Christmas Storyn in song. The impressive candlelight procession entered the auditorium singing the ma- jestic nAdeste Fidelisu. Christmas hymns and carols developed the themes of the reading from Scripture and poets. Beautiful living pictures rever- ently portrayed the Nativity scenes. As the last strains of the triumph- ant recessional hymn, HJoy to the WorldH,died away, all who had witnessed the program felt that they had indeed traveled the HRoad to Bethlehemu. The remainder of the year was filled with many worthwhile activities for the chorus. On February l3,l4,and 15 we were represented in District Chorus by Richard Patterson, Barbara Gee, James E. Bradshaw, and Carol Knight. At the May Day Festival we contributed several selections, in- gluding some fromHOklahomaH. The choir sang at the baccalureate service, une . Next year's chorus will miss the members of the Class of 1958 gradu- ating June 5. These include soloist,Martha Watkins andDennis Harrington, and our accompanist, Barbara Gee. STUDENT COUNCIL This year our council was divided into two groups. The junior high representatives met on Tuesday mornings, and the senior high representa- tives met on Wednesday mornings. By doing this we found that more could be accomplished. Another new idea, which we tried and liked very much this year, was having co-chairmen instead of a president and vice-president. On April ll our joint council was represented in the district meet- ing at Hughesville by Dianne Egleston, Sherman West, Judith Hymes, Helen Bartlett, and Richard Harrison. Barry Baker Williamson High School requires that each student take at least one laboratory science course during his high school years. In junior high schoo1,general science is offeredgin senior high school, biology, chemistry, and physics are offered. Many students whose interests are apcitudes en- courage their participation in the field of science, or who are working toward college entrance avail themselves of the opportunities to take all of the science courses. Under the guidance of Mr. Gaige, Mr. Houser, and Mr. Prugh science clubs have been organized. The weekly meetings have provided interesting and enjoyable activities this year. We have constructed a static machine, experimented with lazy slurry and nutty putty, and performed a few minor rocket experiments. We have studied radio, skeleton mounting, and microbes. We have experimented with white rats and fruit flies. Our work has been varied in scope so that the interests of many have been met. In March, members of the club attended the County Science Fair at Mansfield State Teachers College. Here we observed many interesting pro- jects submitted b students of the high schools of Tio a County Although we have not been able to accomplish al? that we had hoped to do,we have had a very profitable year, and we hope that future members will have as worthwhile and enjoyable a time as we have had. 70 Dolores Dailey, Mary Myers,Brenda Button, Patricia Rochford, Jay Bartholomew Hazel Hall, Phyllis Bell, Betty Jones, MAY DAY FESTIVAL when spring of 1957 came, Williamson High School held its first May Day Festival. The Queen's jesters,Judy Stalter and Robin Cumberledge, led the procession of the students participating in the program. They were followed by the Queen, Patricia Rochford, and her court composed of Phyllis Bell, Brenda Button, Hazel Hall, Betty Jones, and Mary Myers. The girls presented a lovely picture in their beautiful gowns and garlands of spring flowers. The coronation of the May Queen by Jay Bartholomew, Student Council president, opened the progaam. Many student organizations.then participated in the program presented in honor of the queen. One of the most colorful numbers was the May Pole Dance presented by the girls of the ninth grade. We hope that the 1957 May Day Festival has set a precedent for a happy occasion which the students of Williamson will want to enjoy for many years to come. BASEBALL Although our team did not fare too well last year,we have high hopes for the future. The majority of last year's team is returning to form the nucleus for our '58 team, and Coach Meckes is also expecting some bright newcomers. In his second year as our coach, Mr. Meckes predicts a much better showing than last year. He feels that defense was our weak point in the '57 season and plans to emphasize defense tactics in practice this sea- son. He feels that, with the mixture of newcomers and returning letter- men, we will be more of a threat to our opponets. We wish the best of luck to our team this season. 75 F.. -,,,,..,-1 First Row: Gary Cumberledge Second Row: Coach Meckes,Richard Stead an, Richard Harrison,Richard Van Gorden,Theodore Cary, John Bender, Ralph Tillinghast, Weldon Bliss, Edward Haslund, Junior Fye, Terry Colegrove. This year's Junior Varsity Basketball Team consisted of freshmen, sophomores, and three juniors. For many of them, this was their first year of playing on the basketball team. As the season progressed, they showed much improvement in coordination. Aggressiveness, team spirit, and good sportsmanship were high on their scoreboard. John Rundell represented the Williamson J V's at the All Star game. JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL As a result of organizing the Junior High School basketball team, we will know, for the first time in three years, wh0 will advance C0 the J. V. team and what we may expect of them. The experience gained in practice and play during this past season will prove valuable in competition next season. The Juniors won one and lost three of the games played. However, the starting line-up of our team was composed of four eighth graders and one freshman, while the opposing teams were composed mostly of freshmen. It will be interesting to watch these players who show much promise as they develop during the coming year. GIRLS BASKETBALL For the first time in the short history of our new school, we had a girls' basketball team. Although we played only two games, we had a lot of fun and enjoyed the new experience. Both games were with Woodhull: one we lost, and the other we tied. We sincerely hope that WHS continues to have a girls' team.
