Each member of the class looked forward to this occasion with a certain amount of interest as well as suspense. However, the Seniors were quite lenient in their treatment of the bewildered freshmen, and the party which they held for them that evening was one of the most successful events of the school year. The Freshmen launched their social season by entertaining the Sopho- more class with a weiner-roast at the lake on October 6. Mr. Miller, the class adviser, kept a watchful eye on the green freshies. f4z4Zez'cc4 slew K E 20 Front Row: Johnnie Huber, Nub Riggen, Dutch Huber, Hank Weast, Tunney Smith, Kenny Mosher. The Billtown Bombers softball team didn't fare so well this year, although they won 4 out of 12 games and placed fourth in the county. Old Man Weather seemed to frown on the Bombers, and about half of the games were played in rain, ranging from a light drizzle to a deluging downpour. The season's results were as follows: Opponent Place Winner Score Brimfield-Brimfield They 20- 1 1 Gilson-Billtown We 8- 7 Elmwood-Elmwood They 8- 7 Yates City-Yates City We 5- 4 Maquon-Billtown We 9- 6 Gilson-Gilson They 4- 3 Elmwood--Billtown They 6- 3 Yates City-Billtown They 11- 8 Maquon-Maquon They 11- 8 Brimfield-Billtown They 14- 7 Gilson-Yates City We 3- 2 Wataga-Lake Storey They 15- 5 The most exciting game of the year was at Yates City, where the Bombers emerged the 5-4 victor in an eleven-inning struggle. Switzer, Benjamin, and King were the leading hitters. Switzer batted .513, Benjamin .487, and King .375. The pitching staff. Cheesman and Smith, showed great promise and. as they gain more experience, should become really tough. The team batting average was 266, which. although not especially high, is not considered a bad record. Since most of the team members were under-Classmen, the Bombers should have a good, well-experienced team next year. mae Although the trick season has not begun is thc VQIITJIE goes to picss an interesting seison is anticipated The schedule is it noxx stands follows April 70 Tom zhixxk League Track Mett April 1 Knox County Trick Meet M15 3 Star League Tiack Meet M ix 18 State Track Meet The track squad like the softball ind basketball squads has been hard hit by the graduation of tl e Class of 44 ind by the loss of Dean Dison our star runaer serxinff in th Army now Last yen as 1 Sophomo t Dean vuon the half mile in the Kewinee District in the iemarl-.able IITIE of 7 073 thus quali fymg for State conspetition at Champaign za ,.. 5 Y Q' f 1 iw vs ' X z 1. After graduation, moving, and the call of Uncle Sam had taken their toll we had but one member of our 1943-1944 varsity squad left to start the year. Due to lack of age, size, and experience not too much was expected. Improve- ment was noted throughout the year and at times the boys exhibited a strong brand of ball. Roland Benjamin, Captain and only veteran, injured his knee in the late season and was forced to discontinue playing. Two Freshmen, two Sophomores, and two Juniors carried the brunt of the varsity burden. Three games were won by the varsity and four by the reserves. Despite the dearth of victories our fans were loyal and enjoyed watching our games. Our cheerleaders, Marjorie Meece, Willetta Whittaker, LaWanda Buck, and Carol Doubet, loyally supported the boys with their cheers. The Durant sanitorium is on the verge of bankruptcy, when Lester Leach, a regular Mr. Fixit, appears as a life-saver. It is Lester's bright idea to have his pals, Bob and Jack, make up as Doctors Rubitoh' and Slapitonski, specialists from Vienna, who take it off or put it on, according to patients' desires for fleshy remodeling a couple of distortion mirrors are used, one to produce a roly-poly and the other a beanpole effect. How the money rolls in! Then the Negro, Sambo, mixes the looking-glasses and shows the thin patients drawn out to clothesline attenuation and the fat ones grown to elephantine proportions. During the subsequent chase, Lester gets an idea which saves the day. Henry Durant is the superintendent and owner of the Durant sanitorium. Bridget is an Irish cook. A rather blunt and uncouth country girl of twenty describes Gussie. A jolly young college girl of eighteen, with a breezy disposition and keen sense of humor is Molly. She is the niece of Miss Tinkler, a tall, scrawny woman, with a thin, sharp face. Rose is a college girl of nineteen, quieter and more reluctant about getting into jams. Her mother, Mrs. Wyatt, is a short, fat woman of forty. A rather pretty mulatto of twenty-five is the character of Melba. McSnort is a large, fat, blustering individual. Dr. Henry Durant. .
