Moon Principal FAITH It is the only thing we want in this world; if we have that, we are indeed rich, as it will enable us to do our duty under all circumstances, and to bear our lot, however hard it may be. Each has something to do. Do it therefore, but always in faith; without faith we shall find ourselves at fault; but with faith never — for faith can remove the difficulty. It will teach us to love life,-when life is becoming bitter, and to prize the blessings around us; for as every man has his cares, so has each his blessings. And remember. There’s night and day, brother, both sweet things; sun, moon and stars, all sweet things; there’s likewise a wind on the heath. Life is very sweet.” from LAVENGRO by George Henry Borrow 9 ADVERTISING ASSISTANTS CIRCULATION ASSISTANTS Linda Baldwin, Pat Breen, Elaine Damico, Phyllis Gensburg, Janice Goldstein, Marilyn Gordon, Lucretia Manos, Anne McCafferty Florence Pickowitz, Mary Ann Shea, Marjorie Shepatin Emma DeRoo, June Greene, Barbara Gundersen, Roseanna Iorlano, Virginia MacLean Marion Scott, Sally Sheflott, Loretta Southard LEGENDA ASSISTANCE TYPING ASSISTANTS Rosemarie Applebaum, Virginia Beebe, Emma DeRoo Lena Impellitteri, Barbara Kiely, Bernice Lake ASSISTANTS Elaine Bordeau, Anita Bowling, Holly Bryden, Jean Collins, Barbara Denty, Joan Flaherty, Margaret Kelly, Marilyn McClernon, Sarah McDonald, Leila McGarry, Barbara Sherman, Sheila Sullivan, Joan Yates 10 SENIORS ROSEMARIE APPELBAUM Roe” General Volleyball 1, 3; Glee Club 1; Projection 1; Fieldball 2; Basketball 2, 3; Vigilance 2, 3; Folk-Dancing Club 3; Softball 3; Speedball 3; Field Day 3; Choir 3; Senior Day Comm. 4 ; Field Trip Comm. 4; Home Arts Club 4. I. for it expresses the goal toward which we strive through our student government. The council—or legislative department—is composed of the Better Yet Club Officers, Vigilance Chairman, Honor Court Chief Justice, Athletic Association President, Class Presidents and Representatives from each homeroom. The duty of the latter is to carry the students’ suggestions and opinions to and from the Council. At regularly held meetings, matters of vital interest to the student body are discussed and answers are sought to any problems which arise. The Council assists community projects through contributions to the Cancer Drive, the Red Cross, and the Community Chest. It aids in the support of a small school in Greece and sponsors an annual social and money-raising event, the County Fair. Through participation in the Better Yet Club, every girl co-operates actively in running our school and acquires valuable training in good citizenship. 42 The Vigilance Department is that branch of our student government which enforces the laws of the school. The forty-four girls who make up the Vigilance Department are elected by the homerooms in October and April. With their black booklets in which to record names of persistent violators, and their blue and white arm bands, the members of the Vigilance Department keep the school running smoothly by directing traffic between classes, supervising the students’ use of the campus and cafeteria, and acting as office messengers. Their work necessitates their being on duty throughout each day, and frequently calls for the relinquishing of study periods and other personal freeedoms on the part of the members. Athena Poulios President Honor Court The Honor Court with its Chief Justice and seven associate justices represents the Judiciary department of the student government. The Constitution of the Better Yet Club bestows upon the Honor Court the power to try all students who have violated the laws of the school, and to render punishment, subject to the approval of the principal and the faculty adviser. Athletic Association For many years the Athletic Association has played an important role in teaching girls not only good sportsmanship, but the desire to participate in various sports. All students entering W. M. I. automatically become members of the Athletic Association. This makes them eligible to participate in sports and earn various awards, the Old English Monogram being the highest. The athletic year opens with tennis tournaments, fieldball and speedball games. As the season progresses there are bandminton contests, basketball games, bowling, and volleyball intramurals. In the spring softball is played. Then at the climax of the school year, a Field Day is held and girls participate in dashes, relays, and throws. At the final meeting of the Athletic Association, the loving cup is awarded to the class accumulating the greatest number of points by winning inter-class games. This year there were eleven play days and sport days held with Eastern Connecticut high schools. All these activities make the Athletic Association a smooth-running and active organization here at W. M. I. Field Trip Committee The Field Trip Committee, which is made up of one representative and an alternate elected from each of the Social Studies IV Classes, plans all of the field trips which are an important adjunct to their class study of national, state, and local problems. The Field Trips are designed primarily to give the Seniors a firsthand knowledge of the social, economic, and political problems of their local community. Visits are made to the City Council in session. County and Police Courts in session, the Police Station, the Learned House, the Day Nursery, the City Health Department, the County Jail, the State Farm for Women, the Seaside Sanitorium, and the Mystic Oral School. The highlight of the year is an all-day trip to Hartford when the students visit the State Supreme Court and Library, the General Assembly in session, the State Prison, and the Children's Village. Introduction to the Senators and Representatives of the New London District and to the Governor are also a feature of this trip. Business Service Business Service, as in past years, helps its members receive real experience in office work by taking care of any typing, duplicating, or filing which may be needed by the administration or faculty. Its membership is made up of Seniors majoring in Business; it meets regularly once a week for work. Drama Club The Drama Club meetings are used as workshops in which the student who is interested in dramatics may learn more about stage and backstage production. Many phases of the drama are covered during these meetings including make-up, costuming, stage direction, voice, pantomime, and play reading. Drama Club productions incorporate these learning experiences. In 1950 the Drama Club presented its annual Christmas play, and in the spring two plays for the public, Grey Bread and Ladies of the Mop.” This year, because of an increased membership, the Drama Club is divided into two sections, Junior and Senior. Folk Dancing Club The Folk Dancing Club is to furnish fun and recreation, to give the students a better understanding of the traditions of foreign countries, and to help the girls to improve their rhythmic ana dancing ability. This year the club has added hiking to its program for the fall and spring months. 45 Hilltop Hilltop, the school newspaper, has evolved into a four-page periodical which is published monthly by a zealous staff. Editorials, news and feature material constitute the main departments of the paper, but ample space is provided for creative work. Contributions from the administration, faculty, and students are joyously welcomed by the editors—that HILLTOP may actually become The Voice of the School. Junior Citizens’ Council The Junior Citizens' Council of W. M. I. is open to juniors and seniors. Its chief objective is to provide citizenship training. Opportunities are provided for the members to meet key leaders in government. Assistance is given the community during drives, surveys, and special events. Discussion panels are sometimes featured at PTA meetings and in collaboration with the League of Women Voters of New London. Special emphasis is placed on straight thinking and effective speech in the discussion of current problems of local, state, national, and international importance. The club conducts the school election each year, helping to instruct the student body in election procedure and in the use of voting machines. Inter-school forums are held in collaboration with six neighboring high schools. Joint meetings with .other clubs from educational institutions in the city are featured. International Relations Club The aim of the International Relations Club is the promotion of a better understanding of world peoples and their problems by a serious study of the United Nations in content and operation; by inviting leaders in the field of internationalism to speak to its members; by discussion groups; and by the study of the music, dance, and literature of individual national groups. Each year the club conducts one charitable project benefiting the people of a foreign nation and maintains active correspondence with students of other nations. At the conclusion of the school year, the club visits a session of the United Nations. Home Arts Club The Home Arts Club is divided into three sections to meet the needs and interests of the students, particularly those who can not get Homemaking into their school program. There are occasional meetings of the entire group for special programs of interest to all, but most of the meetings are held independently. The cooking club is made up of twenty-four girls who meet in the Homemaking department twice a month to learn that cooking can be fun. They make a variety of foods including quick breads, salads, one-dish meals, and desserts. After the hard work is done, they enjoy sampling the finished product. They also entertain other groups informally to learn the art of being hostesses. The knitting group meets informally to offer opportunity for instruction, not only for those who want to learn how to knit, but also for those who are becoming more expert. A variety of articles such as mittens, socks, and sweaters of various styles and stitches are made by members of this group. The sewing group meets primarily to provide supervision and instruction to those girls who are particularly interested in making their own clothes. This year the most popular selection seems to be a skirt and weskit combination, but other garments are also made. There are some beginners in the group for whom instruction is given in the basic fundamentals of sewing. 47 Latin Club The foremost activity of the Latin Club for the year 1950-1951 will consist of a project, written and illustrated by the members of the club, concerning the Latin language and its influence on the modern world. Also on the agenda will be a series of discussions relating to Roman customs and civilization. In honor of the Christmas season we intend to learn several Latin carols. Library Club The Library Club is a service club, membership being open to girls who are interested in assisting in the Library during their study periods. Each member is scheduled to work in the Library certain periods each week for the entire year. Our club has two sides—working and social. At the meetings, favorite books are discussed, and instruction is given by the librarian. This instruction enables the girls to be of greater assistance when on duty. A Book Week exhibit is arranged each fall, during Book Week in November. Special social meetings are held in observance of special days. Le Cercle Francais Recognizing the need for good-will among nations, Le Cercle Francais endeavored to promote a sympathetic understanding of present-day France. The programs and activities of the club, while providing enjoyable recreation for its members, also served to further their appreciation of the customs and traditions of the French people. The group again worked enthusiastically to provide help for its two adopted French children—a project which has become a cherished tradition of Le Cercle Francais. Klickerette Klub Advanced Photography Field Trip Club Projection Club Photo Club B” Photo Clubs Sixty-five members have organized three photo clubs this year. The most experienced group is called the Photo Field Trip Club, and plans an active year of picture-taking and printing. The other two groups plan to enjoy their photo hobby by sharing their camera interests and improving their photography. The darkroom is staffed by members from each group. Supplies and equipment are paid for by the proceeds of the annual photo” dance, our spring informal. Spanish Club In the Spanish Club, Las Alegeres Senoritas” we learned about the Spanishspeaking people of this hemisphere and their mother country, Spain. Their songs, fiestas, and social customs furnished interesting material for our meetings, while short plays and games gave us practice in using the language. The outstanding event was our Christmas party. j Buena suerte, amigas, en los anos que vienen! Speech Club The Speech Club offers experiences in the individual oral interpretation of literature, in choral reading, in group discussions, and in dramatics. Personality is developed by increase in confidence and poise that comes with the assurance that one has a well-modulated voice, speaks adequately and with sufficient volume. Aviation Club The purpose of the Aviation Club is to acquaint the student with the theory of flight. She should have a working knowledge of meteorology and its importance in flying. Occasionally visits are made to the local airports where design and the aerodynamics of flight are investigated. Students, who at the end of the year successfully pass an examination in the fundamentals of aviation, are awarded club wings and are given, if possible, actual flight training. It is hoped that through the efforts of this Club, students will become more aware of the importance of aviation in their daily lives, and will be prompted to further investigate its possibilities, and perhaps even follow flying as a career. There's that work of art (?)! A model study hall! Look at the Birdie! Future artists! Did everyone study for this test? Seniors’ favorite teacher! The best part of the tea. Can’t wait to get to class! The rush is on! Smile pretty! Oh, if all students were this attentive! Are you sure you’re studying, girls? SPORTS Here at W. M. I., athletics compose an important part of the extracurricula activities. Participation in sports teaches the essentials of teamwork, fairplay, leadership, and sportsmanship. The Athletic Association promotes all sports events at W. M. I. and with other schools. The girls are encouraged to participate in a great variety of activities, which include: tennis, badminton (singles and doubles), fieldball, speedball, basketball, volleyball, softball, and Field Day. As a result of the excellent co-operation of the students with Miss Polinsky and Miss Gray, our physical education directors, a spirit of good will and freindliness has spread throughout the school. 54 a ! Christmas Program Disnw Choir Festival Group The W. M. I. choir is one of the outstanding organizations in the school. Dressed in their blue and white robes, the choir leads the student body in singing the hymns during the chapel exercises each morning. Throughout the year, they sing at various school and public functions. One of the outstanding programs presented in New London was the Christmas Choir Concert with tableaux by the W. M. I. Drama Department. The choir attended the Connecticut Chorus Festival held in East Haven on April 5th, and also made the trip to Boston on May 25th, 26th, and 27th, to participate in the New England Audition Music Festival. Five choir members sang in the Connecticut All State Chorus in Hartford in November 1950, and eight girls were selected to sing in the All New England Chorus held in Auburn, Maine, March 14th to the 18th, 1951. M. I. orchestra completed a very successful season. Many times the student body had an opportunity to enjoy the varied programs of the orchestra, ranging from Bezet's L Arlesienne Suite No. 2 to Charles R. Grean's The Thing.” Although the orchestra did not participate in any of the festivals this year, several of its members played in the Connecticut and New England groups. M. I. 1950-1951 Glee Club numbers fifty students. It consists primarily of freshmen and sophomores. Although it'takes part in school and public activities, its primary purpose is to give proper training in the fundamentals of music reading and voice training, preparing these girls for future membership in the more select W. M. I. Choir, it being necessary that a girl spend at least one semester in the Glee Club before being allowed to try out for the Choir.
