In 1944, a young girl of thirteen years wrote about some of her war experiences in London, and of the many times she had been homeless. Describing the hours she and others were buried in a blocked air-raid shelter, she said, Then it came, a terrific bang! The shelter shook. The lights went out Women screamed. Children, including myself, were crying We could not see. Nobody had the presence of mind to strike a light. We were fumbling about in the dark. Then someone struck a light. I looked and saw that it was my brother with his cigarette lighter, and I had a queer feeling. What a lot of difference that small light made! The people were quiet now. — — — A tiny flickering light amid terror and darkness brought comfort to the heart of a child. Within ourselves we have the light of truth, however small and flickering it may be. It grows stronger and more brilliant as we become more conscious of it, and our training at school should have helped us to become more conscious of this great .power of discernment, and I hope it has. Women have so much to do for the world Awake at last to the truth that lies in their hearts, they will hold aloft the flaming torch of hope and courage to light the darkness that now surrounds mankind, and will lead the world to harmony and enduring peace. Live pure. Your body will be the receptacle for the new race. Speak true. that you may live without fear. Right wrong. by the power of love, and — Follow the Eternal Light. 10
