BOARD OF TRUSTEES Mr Allen B Lambdin, President Mr. Francis F. McGuire, Treasurer Miss Gertrude Noyes, Secretary Mrs. Mary Williams Crozier Mr Fred L. Newton Commander Palmer A. Niles Miss Helen K Whiton Dr. John Albohm (ex officio) Superintendent of Schools Mr. William Stuart (ex officio) Chairman of City Board of Education DEDICATION To our Principal, Mrs. Gertrude P. Moon, we of the class of 1949 dedicate our LEGENDA. In the two years that Mrs. Moon has been with us she has proved herself not only our friend, but also a principal who sets before us the highest of ideals. We have been inspired by her enthusiasm to work toward our common goal — to make W.M.I. and ourselves BETTER YET. IN APPRECIATION Without Catherine H. Vargas, our LEGENDA would not be. Her patience, humor, friendly advice, and hard work have made our book something which we all can treasure. When we say We appreciate you. Miss Vargas, we realize how inadequate these words are to express our real gratitude to you. 5 FACULTY E Mildred Abbott Audio-Visual Education Wheaton College, BA; Simmons College, BS in Home Economics, Cornell University, M Sc. Ellen Creem Circulation Anne Affeldt Despina Nichols Anne Chapman Typing Nancy Wainwright In 1944, a young girl of thirteen years wrote about some of her war experiences in London, and of the many times she had been homeless. Describing the hours she and others were buried in a blocked air-raid shelter, she said, Then it came, a terrific bang! The shelter shook. The lights went out Women screamed. Children, including myself, were crying We could not see. Nobody had the presence of mind to strike a light. We were fumbling about in the dark. Then someone struck a light. I looked and saw that it was my brother with his cigarette lighter, and I had a queer feeling. What a lot of difference that small light made! The people were quiet now. — — — A tiny flickering light amid terror and darkness brought comfort to the heart of a child. Within ourselves we have the light of truth, however small and flickering it may be. It grows stronger and more brilliant as we become more conscious of it, and our training at school should have helped us to become more conscious of this great .power of discernment, and I hope it has. Women have so much to do for the world Awake at last to the truth that lies in their hearts, they will hold aloft the flaming torch of hope and courage to light the darkness that now surrounds mankind, and will lead the world to harmony and enduring peace. Live pure. Your body will be the receptacle for the new race. Speak true. that you may live without fear. Right wrong. by the power of love, and — Follow the Eternal Light. 10 THE BUILDERS All are architects of Fate Working in these walls of Time; Some with massive deeds and great, Some with ornaments of rhyme. Nothing useless is, or low; Each thing in its place is best; And what seems but idle show Strengthens and supports the rest For the structure that we raise, Time is with materials filled; Our to-days and yesterdays Are the blocks with which we build Truly shape and fashion these; Leave no yawning gaps between; Think not, because no man sees, Such things will remain unseen In the elder days of Art, Builders wrought with greatest care Each minute and unseen part; For the Gods see everywhere. Let us do our work as well, Both the unseen and the seen; Make the house, where Gods may dwell. Beautiful, entire, and clean SENIORS Else our lives are incomplete, Standing in these walls of Time, Broken stairways, where the feet Stumble as they seek to climb. Build to-day, then, strong and sure, With a firm and ample base; And ascending and secure Shall to-morrow find its place 11 by Henry W. The function of our Student Council is to discuss and act upon various school problems and activities, and to help in deciding upon some rules. All of the Council's work aims to contribute to the orderly running of our school. Within the Council, the most important element is the group of homeroom representatives The responsibility of these girls is to maintain contact between the governing body, the Council and those who are governed, the student body. The interests of the Council do not lie entirely in school affairs. The United Welfare or Community Chest is a drive which it supports, and for the past year we have assisted in the adoption of a small school of thirty children in Greece. HONOR COURT The Judiciary department of our school is the Honor Court. This department has been given the power to try all violators of the school laws, and to render punishments, subject to the approval of the principal and the faculty advisor. VIGILANCE Easily recognized by their blue and white arm bands are the members of the Vigilance Department, an important part of W.M.I.'s student government. The duties of these girls consist in directing traffic between classes, supervising the student use of the cafeteria and campus, and acting as office messengers. ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION All students upon entering W.M.I. automatically become members of the Athletic Association, one of the oldest organizations of the school. Its purpose is not only to acquaint girls with a variety of sports but to promote good sportsmanship and friendship. A number of play days are held throughout the year with other high schools of this locality. Each member of the A A. is eligible for the awards presented by the A A., consisting of numerals, monograms, and the highest award of all — the Old English monogram. ART SERVICE WANTED—Talented young ladies willing to perform art services for W.M.I. in all branches. Must have one year of experience. Expect work in poster design, slides, interior decoration, stage settings and service for national organizations. Time alloted for enjoyment in the form of sketching, painting and modeling. Long hours, but service much appreciated. Apply in P5, Palmer Hall, on Monday afternoons. In answer to your advertisement, twenty-five W.M.I. girls are willing and able to execute the duties set forth. We are so devoted to our work that the hours are of no importance. The gratitude of the school and the community will be sufficient pay for our services. AUTHORS' CLUB But stir the fires and bid the fancies come Don Marquis The Authors' Club welcomes Juniors and Seniors who enjoy writing as a means of self-expression through experimenting with such imaginative forms as the sketch, the story, the one-act play, and poetry. Along with the sharing of ideas and experiences the students explore the realms of life and books, discover new avenues of beauty, and find new ways of communicating this beauty to others. BIOLOGY CLUB All students interested in Biology are eligible for membership in this club which meets on the second and fourth Mondays of each month. In making plans for the year, members expressed a desire to learn more about two specific things, insects and the microscope. This study includes the preparation and mounting of insects for a permanent collection and offers opportunity to develop proficiency in the use of the microscope. Trips to the following places are anticipated: the sewage disposal plant; a dairy; a greenhouse; a flower show; a wildlife sanctuary; and the Peabody Museum in New Haven. BUSINESS SERVICE The Business Service, as the name implies, is an activity organized in September, 1948, to be of service to the faculty and limited to Juniors and Seniors in the business course. A definite time has been set aside each week for such service. This activity affords not only a convenience for those benefiting by the work done, but also gives valuable experience to the girls who do the work. DRAMA CLUB The meetings of the Drama Club are workshop periods in which the various techniques of staging, lighting, make-up, pan-tomine, play structure and production are studied and practiced by any girl interested in theatricals. Productions of the Drama Club are designed to put into practice these techniques. Presented by the active members of the club, the Christmas program, this year offered an experiment in choral speaking, unusual stage setting and lighting. The Parents' Day program included a Drama Club production The Echo a play which makes use of sound effects. As the culmination of its workshop program, the Drama Club presents an annual spring production. EXPERIMENTAL SCIENCE CLUB The Experimental Science Club is one of the newly organized activities here at W.M.I. open to Juniors and Seniors. The club is under the direction of Dr Daghlian and Miss Hollister and is scheduled to meet twice a month. The activities consist of experiments performed by students in the fields of Chemistry, Physics and Astronomy, according to the indicated interests of each student. FORENSIC CLUB The newly organized Forensic Club gives students an opportunity for experience in extemporaneous speaking, oratory, debate, discussion, and interpretative reading. LE CERCLE F RANCA IS Mesdemoiselles, la seance est ouverte. What pleasant memories that familiar phrase brings to our minds! Twice a month we of Le Cercle Frangais gather together to have fun a la frangaise and to learn more about the people whose language we study in class. However, this year we have done more than merely have fun, for again we have undertaken the project of. giving aid to Christiane and Huguette, the two French children whom Le Cercle Francais adopted three years ago. Their appreciative letters have brought France much closer to us and we shall always treasure the warm friendship of these two victimes de la guerre. DER DEUTSCHE VEREIN In this air-minded age when one can reach distant lands in a few hours, we must be brought closer in spirit as well as in time to the people of other lands. In Der Deutsche Verein we have an opportunity to learn more about the people located in the heart of Europe and to keep posted on events now taking place in that part of the world so vital in this critical period. HILLTOP Come rain or shine, we must meet that deadline! This is the watchword of everyone connected with Hilltop, the monthly chronicle of W.M.I. Revealed through the pages of this, our cherished publication, are the talents of our creative writers and inquisitive reporters. Along with news of school events and the expression of school opinion in the section W.M.I. Thinks, is the lighter side of the paper including such features as Chitchat, A Student's Diary, and the short story of the month. It is in Hilltop that the journalists of tomorrow exercise their budding talents in the newspaper of today. HOMEMAKING Among the several additional courses and clubs offered to students this year, are some intended to help equip the future homemakers with greater skills in the arts of cookery and sewing — skills that will be invaluable to most of them throughout their lives. Homemaking classes have been included in the curriculum for a number of years, but for the first time are being offered afternoons for the convenience of girls whose academic schedules are too crowded to allow them to take homemaking during regular school hours. PERMANENT INFORMAL DANCE COMMITTEE Remember with what pride you attended your first Informal Dance? Remember all the Informals in your later school years which you took for granted as being highlighted good time dances. It was the’ Permanent Informal Dance Committee who made your change, served you coke, arranged for the dreamy music, kept the boys dancing and generally smoothed over the rough places. It was this year's committee of eight girls who made it possible for many clubs to earn substantial sums by means of which they carried on their activities. JUNIOR CITIZENS' COUNCIL The Junior Citizens' Council is open to Juniors and Seniors. Its purpose is to offer training and experience in group thinking and citizenship activity. Emphasis is placed on discussion as a problem solving activity. Community service is encouraged as a significant feature of citizenship work. An inter-school forum program is sponsored with six nearby high schools participating. In the spring the J.C.C. conducts the school elections. LIBRARY CLUB He who loves good books has two worlds in which to live. The Library Club invites into its membership girls who are interested in library work as a career, and girls who enjoy assisting the librarian during their study periods. The purpose of the meetings has been to acquaint the girls with many new books ,and to stimulate them to read mor widely. Each member automatically becomes a reader's assistant and recommends good reading to her friends. The club enjoyed its annual picnic in June, and sponsored an informal dance, proceeds from which were used toward the purchase of an annual gift for the library. This year, in addition to the active club, a group called the Library Service was inaugurated. This group consisted of former members of the Library Club. They proved to be a very valuable asset to the library routine. SORORES TOGATAE The Sorores Togatae, which is open to all students of Latin, tries to offer a varied program that is both educational and entertaining. Not only do the members have an opportunity to become better acquainted with the customs, literature and history of the Romans through reports, pictures, and plays, but they also enjoy singing songs and playing games in Latin. One of the most interesting meetings of the year takes place in December, when a special program is prepared to celebrate the Saturnalia or Roman Christmas. MATHEMATICS CLUB The slide rule, sextant, abacus, googol and the fourth dimension are only a few of the topics to be discussed in the Mathematics Club. The programs are designed to enrich the mathematical background of the student as well as to provide fun and entertainment through mathematical songs, jokes, and puzzles. PROJECTION SERVICE The Projection Service, which has about fifty members, serves the school in various ways. Movies, slides, slide films, and other visual aids are shown in classes, clubs, and assemblies. The operators, with their representatives, plan the daily schedule, help care for the machines and films, train new members, and make slides and other audiovisual materials The experienced operators help with the business of the service. Field trips are arranged, especially to the local theaters. PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB The Photography Club is an active club in our school. The members learn how to take interesting snapshots as well as portraits and other indoor shots. They develop their negatives and print their pictures. Field trips to picturesque places are planned. Local photographers give lectures and demonstrations to the group. AVIATION CLUB The Aviation Club is a new venture this year. The purpose of the club is to familiarize the students of W.M.I. with all phases of aviation and to open up to them possible avenues of interest in this field. Field trips have been made to the various local airports. New London residents who hold pilot licenses spoke to the members, and a representative from the Civil Aeronautics Association was the guest speaker at the December meeting. Later the club was divided into study groups, each taking one phase of aviation as its subiect and having instructors from the Waterford Airport conduct accredited courses A plane ride was offered as a reward for the satisfactory completion of these studies. LAS ALEGRES SE NOR ITAS Meeting twice a month the members of the Spanish Club enjoyed programs dealing with Spain and the Latin American Countries. Sometimes guest speakers told us about their own experiences or we had entertaining glimpses of life in these lands through movies. All had an opportunity to participate informally in games and singing. iBuenas memorias, amigas! FIELD TRIP COMMITTEE The Field Trip Committee was organized in the Fall of 1948 to take the place of the Senior History Club so that all seniors taking Social Studies IV might benefit from the field trips The Committee consists of five girls, one elected from each Social Studies IV class. The Committee plans and makes arrangements for all trips, and, with their advisor, visits places where a large group would be impractical. A complete report is made to each class. Visits have been made to the State Farm, the Mystic Oral School, and the Seaside Sanatorium. The Committee has visited the Learned House, the Day Nursery, the Red Cross, the Visiting Nurse Association, and the City Health Department. A variety of trips has been planned for the remainder of the year so that the girls will have a first hand picture of the social, economic and political life of their community. Sports • « • SPORTS Whether it rained or shone the Class of '49 donned their gym uniforms and filed down to Miss Polinsky. Our efforts in the athletic field were rewarded, as has been proved by our good fortune in winning the Loving Cup during our Sophomore and Junior years. A great number of the girls in the class have received numerals, monograms and Old English monograms for their individual work in athletics. Although all couldn't be Katherine Kellys, we tried our best, and in many cases there was many a pound gladly lost where otherwise it would have been gained. Four of these members participated in the Connecticut All-State Musical Festival which was held in Ffartford on October twenty-seventh and twenty-eight. From its members were chosen the chorus, and some of those who took solo parts in the operetta All Around The Clock written by Miss Burnham. The Choir has appeared in chapel and also in some of the banks, the post office, and the city hall at Christmas time. As usual the whole Choir was adjudicated at the Connecticut Choir Festival this spring. ORCHESTRA The Orchestra this year is composed of twenty-eight members. It has played the processional and recessional for Monday morning chapel and for assemblies and has provided special music during the year. The Orchestra played the overtures to the first and second acts of the operetta All Around The Clock. Several members attended the Connecticut All-State Festival in the fall. The whole group participated in the Connecticut Orchestra Festival. This group, when it entertains, wears white blouses and dark blue skirts. Each member is given a service stripe for each year of membership. For three years work an emblem in the form of a lyre to be worn on one's sweater is presented. BAND The Band participated in civic parades, played for chapel and assemblies and for flag saluting exercises. When appearing in public, they wore blue and white uniforms. The fifteen Twirlers have played an important part in the Music department by appearing with the Band in parades. This group wore blue and white uniforms and white boots.
