Perhaps this is natural. Occasionally a member of society receives a terrific jolt, something terrible happens to this one. It is so shocking to the individual and to the communityg and all the more so, if he is one of our group, one with whom we are acquainted, one whom we have learned to know and love. Just why su.ch things happen, we do not know. Maybe God in his infinite wisdom has some reason. Such is the one to whom this book is affectionately dedicated, Ray Conner. Ray met with a devastating and crippling accident in August of 1956. He was a member of the class of '58. We have missed him very much. Ray has borne his affliction well and his strength and courage remind us of a poem, I.nvictus Qunconque redj by William Ernest Henley. Out of the night that covers me, Black as the Pit from pole to pole, I thank whatever gods may be For my unconque rable soul. ! In the fell clutch of circumstance I have not winced or cried aloud. Under the bludgeonings of chance My head is bloody, but unbowed. Beyond this place of wrath and tears Looms but the Horror of the shade, And yet the menace of the years Finds, and shall find, me unafraid. It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul. scroll
