I958 WHITE RIVER MEMORIES Published by The SENIOR CLASS of WILLIAMS HIGH SCHOOL fe 492 F ..r-f--.......,,,,-,,,1....... f-- fe' us... . ,M a +....,.1 .....- .., -,V .. -...,., UEDICHTIUH ...av-f--Q........-r------. .... ,,.....,.....,....'-I--.....- ,,.--.-.l -.f We take much for granted such as life, health, sunshine, and happiness. Perhaps this is natural. Occasionally a member of society receives a terrific jolt, something terrible happens to this one. It is so shocking to the individual and to the communityg and all the more so, if he is one of our group, one with whom we are acquainted, one whom we have learned to know and love. Just why su.ch things happen, we do not know. Maybe God in his infinite wisdom has some reason. Such is the one to whom this book is affectionately dedicated, Ray Conner. Ray met with a devastating and crippling accident in August of 1956. He was a member of the class of '58. We have missed him very much. Ray has borne his affliction well and his strength and courage remind us of a poem, I.nvictus Qunconque redj by William Ernest Henley. Out of the night that covers me, Black as the Pit from pole to pole, I thank whatever gods may be For my unconque rable soul. ! In the fell clutch of circumstance I have not winced or cried aloud. Under the bludgeonings of chance My head is bloody, but unbowed. Beyond this place of wrath and tears Looms but the Horror of the shade, And yet the menace of the years Finds, and shall find, me unafraid. It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul. scroll Robert Esarey Principal - --A ,. ,-- -A..- ----.. ,,., , .- -4- -.. . , ..,---Q..-..-- --Y Emmett Mitchell, Trustee Mitchelltree Township Olyypiflii Hugh Mefford, Trustee Spice Valley Township Howa rd Ge e Supe rintendent olrfltion A w as du? Q On August 31, 1953, the teachers looked up from their work and were startled to see forty-three students coming from Lawrence and Martin Counties to enroll at Williams High School. They included the following charter members of our class: Larry Williams, Donald Owens Douglas Loveall, Everett Grissom, Lyle Reuter, Helen Beasley, Wanda Parker, Lula Belle Baker, Linda Chapman, Judy Thompson, Russell Wagner, Homer Brock, Donald Key, and Gordon Simmerman. According to our records, this was the largest freshman class ever to assemble at W.H.S. Although high school life was new to us, we soon became accustomed to our new adventure. We, as the teachers can vouch for. had a very difficult time of keeping out of mischief. Luckily, however, we didn't get into any serious trouble and survived our first year of high school. When we were sophomores we had the new task of selecting our own course of study. We finally decided which ones we wanted and went on to receive our credits. In our junior year we began to sell various things in order to go to Washington, D.C. We enjoyed doing this very much and also raised a good deal of money. Finally. the big day arrived. Twenty-six of the happiest people ever to enter W.H.S. came to enroll for our last year. The graduating class consists of the following students: Russell Wagner, Diana Inman, David Webster, Linda Chapman, Homer Brock, Keith Sheetz, Judy Thompson, Donald Key. Helen Beasley, Gordon Simmerman, Jean Armstrong, James Pruett, Barbara Bex, Jerry Sheetz, Bob Hardwick, Larry Williams, Douglas Loveall, Lula Belle Baker. George Caraway, Lyle Reuter, John Crane, Larry Sipes, Larry Akles, Everett Grissom, Don- ald Owens. and Wanda Parker. Through the years we have had some hardships, but we realize that these years have been some of the most happy and enjoyable years of our lives. As we leave Williams High School, to make our own way in the world, we thank our teachers and our parents for inspiring us to continue our schooling so that we could become better citizens of our beloved country. 15 UNDERCLASSMEN Iuniors 'S Sophomores Iumor High 1 Freshmen Jim Anderson Esther Gaither Paul Caraway Shirley Robe rts Barbara Perkins Mike Mitchell Sue Brock Larry Bateman Linda Bough Larry Crane Ros s Bowman Reba Gehring Stephen Maegerlein Janice Haywood Jerry Simmerman Stephen Jenkins 17 Bill Johnson, Vice-President Mike Mitchell, Secretary Sue Brock, Treasurer Esther Gaither, President Geraldine Adams, Reporter Linda Surnme r S Joe Sipes Donna Embree Bruce Jeffery-Smith S . iii if A 'W' iz .1,..
