4 MESSALONSKEE RIPPLE Not only does the high school offer you education in the form of the three R,s, but also physical education as well. The men and women of tomorrow should be physically as well as mentally fit. Mod- ern high schools are now making physical education compulsory. Our school has physical education. This includes classes in health, calisthenics, military drill, and first aid. Sports-not compulsory-include basketball, baseball, and softball. Football will be added to that list next fall. Another essential in any high school is music. In practically all schools, a good percentage of the student body is interest- ed in music. Music should not be compul- sory, however. The town of Oakland and its educational leaders are to be congratulated, because they have done much to make our school what it is. C. SMITH '47 A New Gymnasium I think that a new gymnasium will be appreciated by all the pupils of Williams High School. It will be appreciated not only by the Freshman next fall but also the students who have graduated. 'We need a larger room to accommodate the crowds that we have at basketball games. The present gym does not have adequate seating space. I think that a stationary stage should be built at one end of the gymnasium so that we could have graduation exercises, class plays, dramaiiic club programs, musical programs, and junior prize speaking in our own building instead of Memorial Hall. The stage could also be used for extra seating space at basketball games. I also think that after we get our new gymnasium, it should be kept in good re- should not allowed to de- with drawings or the too of gum. pair. McTAGGART '47 Vocational Many of the young people today who graduate from high school go out into the world with no definite idea of what their life work will be. There are some who go to college not knowing if they will be happy in the work for which they are training. Large high schools have this advantage over small schools in that they can afford to have trained vocational guidance teach- ers. In these schools, the pupils have reg- ular vocational classes beginning in their freshman year, They formulate a general Guidance idea early in high school of what business or profession they plan to enter, and they are able to arrange their school schedule accordingly. In small schools, the towns cannot afford vocational teachers, and this is a great disadvantage to the students. It is true that the teachers are always willing to talk over vocations with a pupil and to help him arrange his schedule, but I do not believe that this is enough. We should have group discussions and help on occupations
