I mean really, they’re SENIORS! First day of school? So what! But, un¬ derneath that cool exterior, they’re just as excited as ev¬ eryone else about the start of a new year. The first day of school is always a day of ex¬ citement and discovery. After that, everything seems to settle down and everyone relaxes and begins to enjoy the new school year. FIRST DAY T] O TIB HALL 4 Renovations B ' m;. ififeltl Although the ren¬ ovat ions here at Wil¬ liams weren’t begun until this year, the actual plans for them were made in 1975. The most urgent changes to be made re¬ lated to safety and accommodations for handicapped stu¬ dents. Other problems concerned energy conservation, lighting, use of the school grounds, need for a better learning environment, and general repairs. The extent of the renovations will depend on the amount of funds available and the changes that are approved by the School Board. Many improvements are already apparent. We now have a ventilation system as a result of the installation of eight exhaust fans. The suspended ceilings and insulation around the win¬ dows will help conserve energy. For handicapped stu¬ dents, we have ramps at two locations, curb cuts, and handicapped stalls in the bathrooms. We also have flu¬ orescent lights throughout the entire building, new locks on freshly painted lockers, and a new fire alarm system. These are only a few of the changes that have taken place at Williams this year. Plans have already been made for many more improvements to keep Williams in top condition and as modern as possible. —Becky Long i Renovations 5 SCHOOL SPIRIT: j ■ ' The W.H.S. cheer- leaders are a group of girls that we can be proud of. Many people don’t realize just how much they do. School Spirit in three different phases: Studying, munchin ’ out, and boogying down. 6 School Spirit WHAT IS IT? School Spirit School Spirit — what is it? Most people would be quick to say going to ball games and yelling until they can ' t yell any more, or just plain going wild. But here at Williams, school spirit is displayed in more ways than just cheering our teams on to victory. Williams prides itself in many different areas. Not only do we have one of the best athletic programs in the state, but we also rank among the state’s finest in academics and the arts. “Second to none, and first in the hearts of us ail.” Most W.H.S. students would agree with this statement. That, in itself, is what school spirit really is — that feeling of pride that dwells in the hearts of everyone. School Spirit 7 i , Chart ula Sce HOLLYWOOD heke we cdme! C. We came here to learn but we learned far more than English or Chemistry or Trig. We learned how to laugh and how to cry. We learned the value of friendship and the true meaning of love. We didn ' t just grow smarter here, we grew up here. he graduating seniors would like this opportunity to thank the staff, the ill teachers, and all the special friends who have come to mean so much to us here at Williams. Have you ever just paused and asked .yourself how you got where you are now? Remember the good ole days when the major homework load was writing your spelling words six times apiece? And now, on an average day, the rough draft of your term paper is due along with an eight unit History test and forty-one trig problems! But, where do we go from here? Most of us are headed out to various colleges and universities where a whole nine weeks is covered in about two and a half days . . . and we think we have it rough!! Nevertheless, we ' re having the time of our lives and have accumulated a treasure chest of memories from elementary and high school days. Cheerleaders chant it . . . “WHS IS THE BEST!” The athletes prove it . . . just last year we were number one in the state in two sports and captured conference championships in several oth¬ ers. The student body . . . we know it. The annual staff must try to sum it up in the yearbook. What makes Williams High School the best? We think it’s the people. Every individual has something special to give. Without the people, we wouldn’t be state champions. Without the people, we wouldn’t have clubs — and we have outstanding clubs and organi¬ zations here at Williams. We know we’re the best. . . so here’s to the people because they’re why! — A.H. School Spirit Committee 73 B-U-L-L-P-U-P-S! (Very loud, and excitingly so!) The 1982-83 J.V. cheerleading squad is certainly exuberant and contains an extreme amount of excitement. These young ladies have worked very hard this past year trying to elevate school spirit and team support. Living up to the example of past squads and setting one of their own, they have produced a hard act to follow. This past year has been filled with memorable events. During the summer, they sponsored a car wash, but from the looks of things, the cheerleaders got more soap and water on themselves than on the cars. Another funny escapade was after the game with Eastern Randolph. Two of the luckier cheerleaders had an “unusual” ride home. They were the only girls on the bus that contained the varsity and the junior varsity football teams. According to one member of the squad, “Setting all the jokes aside, we have really become a family by working toward the goal of a terrific squad.” No, Janet, the car FRESH¬ MEN C H E E R L E A D E R S 75 Just look at that jump! Let’s go freshmen! Are you ready? Well okay. Let’s hear from the freshmen: BULL¬ DOGS, BULLDOGS! The Freshmen class, as a whole, have had to make a big adjustment this past year. But one group in particular has had to push extra hard to live up to the standards at WHS. They are the freshmen cheerleaders. This group is a step¬ ping stone for the squads that are to follow. They have definitely formed a terrific foundation. Con¬ gratulations ladies and welcome to Williams! Vickie Smith, Co-head, and Tamara Lindley, Head Cheerleader. Anna Lee Nahser, Bull¬ dog. Nancy Holt, Linda Imboden. Cheerleaders at Cheerleading Camp. Proud To Be BULLDOGS! B-U-L-L-D-O-G-S! The chants of the Varsity Cheerleaders can be heard almost year ’round. Working diligently, the team cheered the football team to a second straight State Champion¬ ship, and the basketball team to a victorious season as well. Per¬ forming with a new uniform, Anna Lee Nahser, the 1981-82 Bull¬ dog Mascot, has been a terrific asset to the squad. After practic¬ ing through the summer months, the team received high honors at Cheerleading Camp. What’s so special about these thirteen girls? It’s their undy¬ ing pride and spirit. Last spring, the Varsity Cheerleaders were selected the third most outstanding squad in the nation at the National Cheerleading Championships at King’s Dominion, Virginia. Then again, this fall, they were selected to cheer at the 1981 Shrine Bowl, one of eight squads so honored from both North Carolina and South Carolina. Winners Too! This year’s team members are Ray Johnson (coach), Nan Bowman (coach), Danny Hall (Captain), Linda Imboden, Mi¬ chael Leahy, Mark Williams, and Suzanne Young. On February 6, the team participat¬ ed in a “Super Saturday” preliminary com¬ petition designed to narrow the field from forty teams to eight teams. Williams placed fourth and advanced to TV competition against the rest of the top eight teams. High IQ 121 Top Seniors Forecast - Valedictorian My most valuable experience at Williams has been par¬ ticipating in sports. Wrestling and running track and cross country have been very enjoyable, for I enjoy the fun, friendship, and competition involved in sports. Par¬ ticipating in sports has also been very challenging, and it has taught me a lot of self-discipline. My most valuable experi¬ ence at Williams has been my participation on the track team. Through run¬ ning, I have had the satisfac¬ tion of achieving these goals. This experience has shown me that mastering a high goal in life is possible if you have the desire. My most valuable experi¬ ence has been working with the teachers here at Wil¬ liams High School. The friendly and helpful rela¬ tionships I have had with my teachers have enabled me to endure the academic aspect of high school. Coach Martin’s “sweat room” was also an unforgettable expe¬ rience that I did appreciate. The most important thing that I have learned at Wil¬ liams is how to associate with other people and not to be a recluse. But I haven’t had a most valuable experi¬ ence, I’ve had many! A mar¬ shal at last year ' s gradu¬ ation, 3 years with the bas¬ ketball teams, the High I.Q. team, 3 state championship football teams, working on the musical and Homecom¬ ing, Governor’s School, and, most especially, meeting so many wonderful people at WHS. Hopefully, ten years from now I’ll be out of medical school and working in some field of research. I don’t think I’ll still be living in Burlington, but you never know. After all, it’s a girl’s privilege to change her mind. 122 Top Academic Seniors And Reminisce . .. Salutatorian Ten years from now, I hope to be happy In my career and financially secure. I hope that my job will be interesting and challenging. I would like to be married, starting a family, and living in a large house in the country. My house would have an attic where I could go to read, to paint, and to write. My most valuable experi¬ ence at Williams has defi¬ nitely been cheerleading. I love cheering because I love Williams and I enjoy show¬ ing my pride in our school. Most of all, I love cheerlead¬ ing for what it has given me. It has taught me leadership, responsibility, cooperation, and many other important qualities. But the best part about cheerleading is the friends that I have gained and the family that my friends and I have grown to be. I have had many valuable experiences which stem from various skills which I acquired from some of my many mentors at Williams. Phil Collins taught me the art of “Springstein Slid¬ ing”. Neal Manning showed me how to differentiate be¬ tween music and “mud”. Robert Boyle taught me that there isn’t life after “lu- dens”. Scott Harman helped me “get me @ ! together. . . really.” Jeff Puckett taught me how to hate everybody. Ten years from now I hope to have graduated from medi¬ cal school and to be special¬ izing in the area of cardio¬ vascular surgery. If this dream does not come through, I’d like to be teach¬ ing philosophy at one of the Ivey League schools. What¬ ever I do, I hope to be well- educated, well-financed and single. I think that my most valu¬ able experience at Williams was being in Chorale. I not only had a great time, but also learned a lot. I learned much about performing, as well as about all the work that goes into a perfor¬ mance. Our shows and con¬ certs involved a great amount of time, hard work, and discipline; but the final outcome was always worth it. In ten years I hope to be fin¬ ished with my schooling and started on a career in psychology. I want to live in a large city and practice psy¬ chology privately. I hope to eventually have some of my writing published. Under the guidance of Mr. Klaiber, Mrs. Garner, and Miss Bowman, the juniors put together a beautiful scenario of the Orient. Prom Preparations 131 One night out of the year . . . guys set aside concert tours shirts and faded jeans for tuxedos. Girls spend four or five hours getting ready instead of the usual two! (Not included are the hours spent shopping for a formal dress and shoes!) McDonald ' s and Wendy ' s spend a quiet evening wondering what is in the air causing the guys to take their dates to the Cutting Board or the Country Club. It’s the Junior-Senior prom — and the 1981 prom. East of the Sun, was most definitely a night to remember. Students danced the night away to the music of “Steppes ” and then made their way to various after prom parties and breakfasts. Most couples were still out to greet the dawn. A friend is someone that knows every¬ thing about you, but likes you anyway. There are many ways at Williams to make friends. Extra-curricular activities such as, FCA, Chorus, and various sports, are some of the few. Throughout our years at Williams, we will meet many people. Some will be just casual ac¬ quaintances; some may be a little more. But no matter how far away they may be, five miles apart or five thousand miles apart, the real friends you make during your years at Williams, you’ll keep forever. Homecoming started with the selection of the court. Selected by their fellow classmates, this year s court was composed of Happy Curtis and Bobby Barbour, Julie Durham and Derek Bennet, Tamara Bindley and Jim Moury, Paula Moulton and Burney Jennings. The highlight of the week was the crowning of the queen and king, Paula Scarborough and Cedric Patterson. Congratulations to all court members! Not many people realize the time and dedication that she puts into her job. A graduate of Elon College, she began her teaching career in 1959. However, she didn’t arrive at Williams until 1978. Dedication seems to best sum up the personality of this lady. She has been known to spend up to 20 hours a day during the prepara¬ tion of a show. “Do it right, or don’t do it at all, ” is just one of the many aspects of her teaching. She is a firm believer in hard work and self-discipline. In addition to being a dedicated teacher, this lady sets a fine example for her students. For when things get hectic around show¬ time, she not only works her very hardest; she always tells her students, “Do your best and He’ll do the rest.” The 1982 Annual Staff dedicates this edition to one of the most dedicated people in the system, Mrs. Thomasene Sparks. We would like to thank her for being our leader and teacher, but most of all for being our friend. The coach must push and continue to push the par¬ ticipants to use their abilities to the extreme. According to a member of the ’81 track team, Coach Robertson certainly did the job well. He spent his time producing the top-notch team it became. He pushed the girls to do their best and to do it right. He told them to run, not to win, but to do their best. All the hard work paid off, and the team wants to say, “Thanks, Coach!” Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may ob¬ tain. And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we are in¬ corruptible. I therefore so run, not as uncer¬ tainly; so fight I; not as one that beateth the air. Under the leadership of Len Gant, Dale Hargrove and Mac MacDaries, a great deal of leadership was shown. After falling short two points to cross-town rival Cummings High School in the City County Relay, the Bulldogs managed to come back and capture the Mid-State title for the fourth con¬ secutive year. As for 1982, great things are expected from this team. Williams High School. We were more than 315 strong; little did we know what lay ahead. Now, all that was ahead is a part of our past, and a new and broader future is just beginning. We, the editors of this Doe Wah Jack , have chosen and published our volume of our lives. The story will be continued by others in the years to come. For us, there is left only the task of typing the words, “The End, and placing this 1982 volume of memories on the shelf to gather dust and to be occasionally lifted from the shelf and read by those who shall be publishing their own volume of the precious Doe Wah Jack THE END . . . 232 The End - - _ _
