Robert Register, semifinalist in sectional tournament Jim Latnam wins state tournament. David Williams slams his serve. Looking at the results from the 1977 state tennis tournament, Williams High School obviously sports one of the best teams in the state. The Bulldogs played some of the best teams in the state and finished the regular season with a record of 9-5. Then, the team went on to sweep the central 4-A division 7 conference tournament and then won the Greensboro Sectionals. Jim Latham and Robert Register qualified for the state, while Doug Peeler just missed qualifying although he reached the quarterfinals in the sectionals. In the state tournament, Jim won the state singles title, being only the second sophomore to do so in the history of the North Carolina Athletic Association. I , Kelly Key, a sophomore, takes top position. Under the direction of a new coach, Fiita Snyder, the 1977 girl's tennis team had an ex- cellent season with a 6-2 record. Since Williams moved into the Mid-State 3-A conference this year, the team was forced to play tough schools in other conferences because only one other school in our conference had girls tennis. The girls defeated excellent teams such as High Point Cen- tral, with both losses going to powerful Chapel Hill. The girls elected Karen Davis, a senior, theirteam captain for the second consecutive year. The addi- tion of two sophomores, Kelly Key and Sally Brown, proved valuable to the team. Kelly Key played in the number one position, followed by Karen Davis in the second. Kelly and Karen, along with Patty Koury, Beth Jones, Kerrie Long, and Leslie Messick, advanced to the sectionals held in Greensboro. The girls brought home third place out of 16 schools, only one point behind the second place school. As the team was composed mostly of juniors and sophomores, the girls are ex- pecting another banner season in 1978. Messick and Long go undefeated in regular season. 26 The 1977 Girls Tennis Team - back row - Rebecca Mann, Karen Davis, Ellen Sigman, Margaret McKibbin, Kerrie Long. 2nd row - Leslie Messick, Sally Brown, Patty Koury, Sally Fiuth Nahser. Last year's golf team had an outstanding year. Led by coach Charles Little, the team placed second in the conference, losing by only one stroke to Bagsdale. From the conference, they went to the sectionals. Here they placed third. This finish was good enough to advance them to the state championships. Led by Mike West's second place finish in Medalist play, the team captured the first place trophy. The team was composed of Mike West, Blake Pardue, Dee Robinson, Chris Hoover, Jim Maynard, David Good- man, Hunt Ward, David Pulliam, and Tim Henley. 29 Cross Country Team Places 5th in Sectionals This year's cross-country team posted a record of 7 wins and 7 losses. The team ran as an independent squad this year due to the lack of teams within our conference. The season was capped oft with a 5th place tie with cross-town rival, Cummings, in the sectionals at Duke University in Durham. Part of this year's team ran in the Cross Country Carnival at Campbell College in Buies Creek, North Carolina. They placed 14th and 21stout of 28 teams. Van Beck placed 4th in his division. The team also sponsored The First Annual City-County Invitational Run, an event Coach Gozjack hopes will continue to be a success in the future. The team's top runners were seniors Van Beck, Steve Collins, Woody Hewitt, and Russell Lawrie, junior David Gilliamg and sophomores Tim Holm and Hunter Walsh. Rounding out the 19 man squad were seniors Nathan Allen, Ricky Barbee, Mark Bryan, Philip Earnhardt, Jim Gardner, Ed Hogan, Jay Hudson, Guy Lambert, and Jody Trollinger, junior Vern Lewis, and sophomores Scott Arthur and Benji Thomas. The returning juniors and sophomores, with the addition of next year's sophomores, should form a strong foundation for next year's team. Determination and hard work made up for the lack of experience of the girls volleyball team. ln its in- itial season, the 1977 team finished with a 8-6 record. Coached by Diane Komondorea, the team impressed almost every other coach in the Mid- State conference with its skill level and rapid improvement. Even though they were limited by height, they still managed to defeat much taller teams. Seniors Cindy Moore and Wendy Langley, and juniors Myra Crisp and Teri Owen led the team with help late in the season coming from Tammy Loy. Of the 1977 team, only three girls, Nellie Currie, Teri Owen, and Myra Crisp, will be returning next year. But the experience these girls gained this year will help them in leading the team to a winning season next year. The 1977 Track Team proved to be an outstanding part of the Athletic Program at WHS. Darryl Hymes and Robert Williamson, being only sophomores, were great assets to the team. Hymes showed his ability in the 100 yd. dash, 220 yd. dash, broad jump, and the 880 yd. relay team. The triple jump was mastered by Williamson. James Wolfe, 440 yd. dash, Randy Day, 880 yd. run, and Kenneth Dunn, one mile run, contributed much to the team in their final year at Williams. Juniors dominated the 1976 Track Team with Glenn Watts, high hurdles, Van Beck, two mile run, Rodney Byrd, high jump, Frank White, shot put and discus throw, Gray Stout, pole vault, and James Ellison, 880 yd. relay team. Making All-Conference for Track 1977 were Randy Day, Robert Wiliamson, and Van Beck. Two WHS School Track and Field Records were broken during the season. Van Beck set a new record for the 2 mile run with the time of 9:57. The 880 yd. relay team, which consisted of Gray Stout, James Ellison, Darryl Hymes, and Rodney Byrd, also set a new WHS record. Although the Bulldogs got off to a slow start, losing to Grimsley 20-24 and and then to High Point Central 7-14, they came back to win over Beidsville 22-14. After suffering a loss to Southern, the Bulldogs started a winning streak that lasted four games, including two shu-touts. The JV basketball team posted a 11-9 record this year. The JV team, coached by David Wood, was composed entirely of sophomores. The team was led by Frankie Currie, who played varsity ball part of the season, Chip McCorkle, Mark Reams, and Gary Bruce. The squad was multi-talented and put forth great effort. Team members were: Mike Fteaves, Pat l-lickey, Chuck Haith, John Hightower, George Bryson, Gene Chrisp, Mike Chrisp, William Turner, Gary Bruce, Chip McCorkle, Mark Fieams, John Freeland, and Frankie Currie. With the loss of four starters off last year's team, the 1978 Bulldog basketball squad was faced with the task of replacing these players. After getting off to a slow start, the team recovered to trail only Cum- mings forthe top spot in the Mid- State 3-A conference during the regular season with a 9-5 record, and finished second in the con- ference tournament. ln his second year as head coach, Danny Morrison led the team to the dis- trict tournament for the first time since Jeff Crumpton played here, so the basketball program seems to be turning around at Williams. Next year's team, losing the ex- perience of Gordy Lahey, captain, and five other seniors, will have to rely on the experience gained by the juniors and JV players to produce a winning season. w Q . With the change from 4-A to 3-A basketball, the 1977-78 girls basketball team was forced to play in the lvlid-State East, one of the toughest con- ferences inthe area. The Bulldogs had an overall record of 7-13, and a con- ference record of 2-12, but the majority of losses were by less than six points. ln the final game of the regular season, the team showed their poten- tial in whipping Cummings 51-47. When the conference tournament rolled around, Williams was seeded seventh and faced top-seeded E. Randolph. In a display of fantastic shooting, Williams just missed knocking off E. Randolph. Coach Rita Snyder worked hard and the results were the evidence -the style of play was greatly advanced over previous years. Rene Fowler, cap- tain, showed much leadership during the season and will return for the Bulldogs next year. The talents of two seniors, Carmen Ballard and Wendy Langley, will be greatly missed next year, but the majority of the players will be returning. ra? Two plays were performed to capacity audiences at Shiloh Presbyterian Church. Instead of the audience coming to the actors, the actors went to the audience. ln December, twenty-seven members became witches, fairies, robots, and princesses. They performed about twenty times for area elementary schools. The actors had as much fun as the children. dience loves Robot Prince falls in rrrr love: wi he Pryant. Two of our usual crew members came from the backstage to act in this production: Woody l-lewitt, who portrayed Shaw's prac- tical hero, Bluntschli, and Nathan Allen, who portrayed the accommodating servant, Nicola. A newcomer Robert Trifunovic, did a wonderful job with the dramatic, romatic hero, Serguis. Guy Lambert portrayed the Bussian soldier. Three more newcomers to the stage rounded out the cast. Junior Beth Bryant played the role of the aspiring servant, Louka. Two sophomores, Susan Jobe and Paul Tobin, portrayed Catherine and Paul Petkoff, the cultured Bulgarians with a library. John DeMarra, Kim Bryant, Kim Dorsett, and Maureen Laing provided invaluable assistance as committee chairmen for backstage crews. The production was a great success, according to the advisors. 75 Q l insanity Strikes WHS Faculty Again Above: The old folks fLowry and Lee! help each other offstage. Work began on the lab last summer, and was not com- pleted until early this year. The lab provides much more storage and working space, better facilities, and easier access to supplies. lvlr. Foster also got a graduated platform in his new room lpictured abovel. He likes the new room because he can see every student, and they can see him. A writing lab has also been made available for student's use. The lab instructor is Mrs. Helen Euliss. Students may sign up to see her, or may visit in her free time. In addition to run- ning the lab, lvlrs. Euliss visits classes to discuss their various assignments. 88 Nevv Lavv Requires Teachers to Write lEPs. lr' fa ' t S t k ...W Q 5' I , 1 X v e e r,ree , .- f , i ii ,.,,5 r .e I . , I ., i .,, N .: -.. - W Last summer, the North Carolina General Assembly passed the Creech Bill. Since the founding date, September 19, 1930, the Barker has served as an outlet for student opinion. Now, forty-seven years later, the Barker provides the best possible coverage of student activities. This year's staff is divided into the areas of news, features, editorials, and sports. Each area is headed by its own editor and supervised by the two editors-in-chief. A business manager keeps tabs on the paper's financial state. The annual photographers share their time and talent to get great action shots. Mrs. Shirley Faircloth serves as the advisor. Everyday, the reporters go where the action is. They get the latest scoops on students, faculty, activities, and V sports. After the reporter gets his facts, he writes his story. The editor checks each sentence for grammatical errors or misleading information. After typing the story in columns, the editors-in-chief and staff discuss the layout of the paper. The rough draft of the paper is finished and sent to the printer. And thus, another issue of the Barker. 94 My .Mt A Y i , l I r l Sports Sta Barker Reporters This year's editors-in-chief, Jay Huds, t lg, W. ng Photographers, Steve and Scott, and Editor, Mark.
