QE .Q -. , Q, , , C He is one of the greatest teachers ever to walk the halls of Williams High School. Not only does he make a student work hard, he treats him as a real friend. With his friendly smile and his classic tales, how could you ever forget him? He loves his work and his stu- dents. Why else would he travel thirty-five miles a day and stay at school some days till 9:00 P.M.? It is because of his dedication to his classes, to the Spanish Club, to the Inner Club Council, to the Student Council and to all students that we would like to honor Mr. Iohn Temple by dedicating this 1974 Doe-Wah-lack to him. I ,g,..,..4 -' Juniors Retain Prom Tradition. Hold Talent Show In a year considered by many to be a year of change at Williams, the Iunior Class made it known how it felt. Nothing was taken for granted as tradition. The activities were taken into consideration and judged on for their own merits by the entire class. Although the Homecoming Parade was eliminated, the Iuniors built a float for judging in the stationary float competi- tion. The Iuniors voted to retain the tradition of a Iunior-Senior Prom, but with a new provi- siong the prom would be semi- formal, allowing a larger per- centage of people to attend. The class presented Tele- thon '73 a talent show to raise money for the prom. 1.5: 1 - Iunior Class Advisor - Miss Edith Allen. junior Class OfHcers: fBelowJ Eddie Bowen - Pres., Betty Carrow - V.P., Gaye Gatlin - Sec., Sherrie Abbott- Treas. ell ll It f -- it-ff A . Spirit of 76 is Here The Sophomore Class of Williams High School this year proved from the start that they had a lot to contribute to their new school. They showed their loyalty and enthusiasm by winning the Class Cheering competitions at both the foot- ball and basketball games. There were more floats entered by the Sopho- more Class in the Homecoming Float Competi- tion than by either of the other two classes. The Sophomore Float won third place in the judging. The class chose the traditional Spaghetti Sup- per for their money raising project. With this money they will be off to another great year as Iuniors. Indeed, the class of 76 promises a lot to the future of Williams High School a school of which they have certainly become a vital part. Hurrah for the Spirit of 76! ELECTION COMM: fBottomJ Elaine Ferrell, Lona Sayer, Bob Lane, H. O. Hayworth, Staley Moore, Tim Sulli- van, Henry Lindley, Iulia Hardy, Ben Easley, Web Iones. The 1973-74 Election Com- mittee, under the dual leader- ship of Staley Moore and Tim Sullivan, took a more active and independent role in school affairs than any of those in the past. Not only has this evermov- ing group taken on the regular schedule of handling Sopho- more registration and voting near the beginning of the year, registering the other two classes later on, and control- ling all Election assemblies - but also spear headed the elec- tion of all Sophomore home- room presidents so the newly elected Sophomore officers would not have to be bur- dened with that complicated task. To add to that, the Elec- tion Committee - which has no more than a dozen mem- bers - registered the largest percentage of Seniors of any past committee without taking the books to homerooms. The Committee has been the most active of the year, with almost total freedom from the Student Council. This year's group has laid the ground Work for committees in the future, and shown them its potential powers. V I A , Paragon and Students Show Artistic Abilities -WH! ,ff FA CE VAL UE The written word is a self portrait drawn by the graceful, delib- erate strokes of the author's pen. In his writings an author expresses his thoughts using his ears, nose, mouth, and eyes. His ears listen for the melodic line and harmony of the words being used-how-complement and work with each other to the author's advantage. The nose smells out the phrases and ideas that would best evoke the author's intended response -the pungent odor of shock and anger, or the pleasant aroma of joy and entertainment. The mouth is author's means of conveying his ideas - what he actually says, and how he says it. It indicates the general mood of the author's self-portrait. It could be pouting, trembling, or grin- ning sadistically. The two eyes - Inspiration and Imagination - are the two most important elements in any composition. An author must have a reason for writing and he must use his imagination to make his work worth the time it takes to read it. When these five basic elements are combined in the right pro- portions, the result is a balanced and unified inner self. by Susan Wright PARAGON STAFF: Susan Phelps, Besty Gant, Robin Stanfield, Debra Nicholson, Olive Auger, Bonnie Moss, Lisa Bennett, Sherri Grant, Pam Brady, Mark Andrews, Kristy Ketchum, Kelly Thomas, Ienny Dunn, Ianet Morgan, Iacque Wiest, Ben Easley, Tim Sullivan, Bob Lane, Bill Grady, Buddy Hayworth, Mau- reen Wheat. Orchestra Sponsor: Bottom: Kati Ray. VS BURLINGTON SENIOR ORCHESTRA The Burlington Senior Orchestra is a group composed of students from five different schools in the city school sys- tem-. The main bulk of the orchestra comes from Wil- liams and Cummings and it is basically a High School level organization. To fill the ranks more fully students from Sel- lars Gunn, Turrentine, and Broadview are used. They per- form an annual Christmas Concert near the end of vaca- tion. This year they barely escaped cancellation because of snow and ended up with a very enjoyable concert. Mr. Eugene Schwieger, celloist from A. S. U. was guest soloist. 'The N. C. Orchestra Festival has been held in Burlington the past two years. This festi- val brings orchestras from all over the state to play before a professional level musician. The Burlington Senior Orches- tra performed well this year in the festival, which was held at Cummings High School. The Orchestra also per- formed assembly programs at Williams, Cummings, and Sel- lars Gunn, an event which has become a highlight for the Orchestra. The final Concert of the year is performed in conjunction with all string students in the city. Around 150 students from 4th grade level to 12th grade perform. These students repre- sent every school in the Bur- lington City School system and the future Burlington Senior Orchestra. A tremendous perform- ance by all-conference back Eddie Foust led the Dogs to their win. Foust scored 3 times, ran for 60 yards and baffled the Warriors' defensive line. The Bulldogs had their hands full for 3 and a half quarters and found themselves behind with 13 seconds left. CBottomJ Ricky Walker is off and running behind key blocks. The 2nd game matched the Bulldogs against a powerful Southern Alamance team. The Patriots came out on top 21-6. The only highlight of the eve- ning was a 3rd period drive which resulted in Foust push- ing over from the 3 yard line. Game number three for the Bulldogs took them to Sanford and to face the tough Yellow Iackets. The Iackets started out fast collecting 3 quick scores. But the Bulldogs were not out gunned and with a few breaks, could have won. The final score with the Iackets on top was 34-21. Two miscues inside the Sanford to cost the Dogs 2 scores when they were only down by 14 points. Doug White threw for 119 yards hit- ting 11 of 29 passes. Foust, Ricky Walker, White and Mike Snipes led the Bulldogs to their only scores. The first confer- ence game saw Roxboro come to town. The Bulldogs scored a 20-18 win behind the perform- ance of Neal Bradley. Two scores by Bradley and another called back by a penalty sparked the Bulldogs to a 1-0 record in conference play. The defense was keyed by senior Keith Pratt who recovered a fumble and Foust who picked off a pass. Doug White also had a good might hitting 7 of 15 passed for 87 yards. B fi Cross-Town Rival Cumm Reidsville was the next victim for the Bulldogs as Williams came out ahead 33-20. A pair of fourth period TD's were needed to ice the game. The win upped Williams record to 3-2 and 2-0 in the conference. The offensive units controlled the game for the most part as the Bulldogs scored early with Doug White hitting Mike Snipes on a 42 yard pass. Eddie Foust got two scores on five and also while Ricky Walker saw a TD come his way. High Point Andrews proved to be the next opponent for the Bulldogs, and the eventual State Champs posted a 27-0 win. The Bulldogs had trouble all night and found their backs to the wall most of the time. After the first 12 minutes, it looked like the Dogs would keep it close falling behind 6-0, but miscues netted scores Andrews with two second period scores and sent them on their way. Next for the Bulldogs was the cross town rivals from Cummings. The Cavalier offense resembled that of a mite league team and the Dogs after a sluggish first half, pounded a 35-0 whipping into the feeble Cavs. Eddie Foust and Ricky Walker did most of the dam- age with the two fleet backs combining for 296 yards, four touch- downs and a pass for a TD. Mike Snipes opened the scoring parde receiving a Foust pass for the only necessary points to win. Foust scored a third period to notch the 14-0. The last period saw the Dogs get 21 points off scores by Foust and two by Walker. The Williams defense also showed fine play as they held Cummings to just 48 total yards. David Morton echoed this aspect of the game by picking off a stray pass in the fourth quarter. fTop rightj Head Coach Ierome Evans. fBottom leftl I did it again! Michael Snipes. it The Homecoming game for Williams saw Eddie Foust at his best. Foust romped for over 200 yards and four TD's. More- head provided the static for the Dogs as they quickly fell to the wayside 42-0. The last two games meant a lot for the team as they found themselves at a position to win the conference championship. Parkland was the first game and a bad start for the Bull- dogs cost them the ballgame. Foust, White, and Bull Clayton led Williams but it wasn't enough. The final game of the year saw a big strong West Forsyth team venture into Memorial Stadium and get a defeat smacked down their throats. After the disappoint- ing loss to Parkland the Bull- dogs regrouped and came out in front. Eddie Foust tallyed three times and collected 135 yards on the ground. The final record for the Bull- dogs was 6-4 overall and 5-2 in conference play. The Bulldogs finished in a tie for second place with Parkland behind Andrews. Many players led the Bulldogs this year includ- ing Eddie Foust, Doug White, Ricky Walker, Wayne Cole and others. But it would be unfair to name just a few, because it took an entire team to come together and finish as high as they did. lt was a credit to the coaching staff and play- ers alike who made it possible. The year as it was now shines a bright light for next year's prospects and lets the coach- ing staff ponder over a next year's title. The Bulldogs playing with an abundance of small players seemed to play very well at times, and very bad at others. A final record of 8-15 was not indicative of the play- ing ability and talent on the team. The season started with the Bulldogs traveling to Graham for their opener. The Dogs played a tremendous game in the backcourt and completely devastated the Red Devils. The 61-52 win was led by Wayne Cole who scored 18 points, Mark Lunsford who collected 14, and Eddie Foust who added 12. Then the Bulldogs started on the path that paved the way for the rest of the year. Going to High Point Central, the Dogs took a heartbreaking loss, 63-62. The WHS Cagers blew a 10 point lead in the fourth quarter to give the game away. This type game was to haunt the Bulldogs the entire season. Rebounding was a big problem to the smaller Bull- dogs as they lost the game. Next, they took on Greensboro Page, Central, Graham, and Roxboro. Wayne Cole led the Dogs to their only win in these games as he scored 30 points against Graham. Eddie Foust, Ed Big Bird Moser, and a host of others joined in. The Bulldogs carried a 2-4 overall record into the annual Holiday Classic to do battle with Page, Chapel Hill, and Cummings, The kind of talent in the tour- ney led the Bulldogs to playing at unreached peaks. The first night pitted Williams with Page and Cummings with Chapel Hill. The Dogs played their best game of the season and whipped a Page team that had stopped them earlier. Eddie Foust led to victory as he pumped in 28 points, a lead of 45-29 in the first half proved too much for Pirates. The next night the Bulldogs were to play crosstown rival Cummings. 6-'N fTop leftj Senior guard David Smith. fTop rightj Senior forward Eddie Foust. fBottom leftj Senior center Ed Moser. fBottom rightj Senior Forward Richard Russell. A packed house saw the WHS Cagers leading by a 34- 29 score. The contest got very tense as the lead was dwindled to a tie at 57-all with 13 sec- onds remaining and a stray shot was rebounded by Luns- ford as the Dogs called for time. A final pattern was not set, only to get the ball up court and try a shot. David Smith didn't play too much but managed to find time to knock in a 30-footer for the win. Smith's buzzer burned tickled the cords as no time remained. The Bulldogs took the Classic Tourney champi- onship for the second straight year. Foust won the MVP award and Wayne Cole made the All-Tourney team with Foust. Next for the Dogs was the conference road, but again bad breaks prevailed as the Dogs couldn't find the winning formula. West Forsyth, Reids- ville, and Parkland all took wins over Williams by very close margins. The Bulldogs were in every game and just lost in the last few minutes. The Bulldogs continued good play and beat Cummings along with Morehead twice and Parkland. Eddie Foust, the top point producer all year long led the Bulldogs in each of their wins. The season came down to the final stages with Foust, Moser, sophomore Ricky Gunn, Morris Ianey and Cole leading the way. Support would vary at times with a handful of faithfuls at one game and a packed house at others. The Bulldogs traveled to High Point Central Gym for the Conference tournament in hopes of a fourth straight championship. A West Forsyth team that had beaten WHS twice in the year built up a 24- point lead in the first half. The Bulldogs, although they showed spirit and determina- tion as they battled back to 3- point margin, only to lose 70- 60 to close the season. Tommy Lindley and Philip Adkins, who were in charge of scenery, putt a great deal of thought and work into each set. With the help of others in the cast, they succeeded in building several different sets of scenery. With Top Broadwag Ai-traction The Music Man X The 4th of Iuly celebration consisted of the Wa Tan Ye girls for an Indian War VVhoop Dance. The curtain opened on stage to reveal the main street of River City, Iowa. The stage is alive with the townspeople. Staley Moore, who starred in the title role, played the glib-tongued, sly Professor Harold Hill, the lovable rogue who makes it his business to dazzle the townspeople into letting him start a boy's band, and then skipping town with the money. His plan fails, how- ever, when he falls in love with Marian Paroo, a prim librarian, played by Teresa May. l ??ffiC5fCQ1e 'v -T' ff , , ,, t fP,f?,'5 fxyf fw The opening scene of the musical was performed in the left orchestra pit, where a train car was set up, filled with busy salesmen and men reading newspapers. The salesmen were being jiggled as they sat in an old- fashioned train. To this clack- ety-clack rhythm, they toss one another an antiphony of shop-talk phrases like Ya gotta know the territory! The salesmen include Bruce Orcutt, Maurice Boswell, Ioel Moffett, Bill Ruhlmann, Neal Mann, Greg Martin, Rodney Iustice, Steve Ivey, Scott Wil- kinson, lack Burton, Tom Challenger, Mic MacIntosh, Ierry Barnwell, Kim Clark, and Richard Coble, with Marshall Bigelow as the train's conduc- tor. , 1 ,Mi , t 1 Another popular scene in The Music Man was the library where Professor Harold Hill fStaley Moorel, admonished to silence in the library where he had come to Woo the librarian, lead a mocking tip-toe dance through the book stacks. The obstacle this year was a feeble Morehead squad. Eddie Foust the senior all-conference half- back erupted for 207 yards and three touchdowns not to men- tion throwing for one himself leading the Bulldogs to a rous- ing 47-0 triumph. But the game was not entirely a rout. For twelve minutes the Dogs offence sputtered and came up with no points, but a sudden rush ended the first half 21-0. Touchdowns by Ricky Walker and Doug White along with a thirty-one yard scamper by Foust just about tucked the contest away for the home standers. The second half produced twenty-six points and Morehead was crushed in quick fashion. Final statistics tell the story. Williams led in each category. First downs 25 to 8, rushing 262 to 29 and passing 8 of 16 for 119 yards to 4 of 8 for 56.
