Coach Evans had to prove himself to be worthy of his posi- tion; and the students of Williams had to show them- selves to be fairminded toward him and toward each other. In every phase of his school activity, Coach Evans has shown himself to be an excellent leader and educator. In appreciation, the 1971-1972 Doe- Wah-Jack is therefore dedicated to Jerome T. Evans. Cross-Country, the newest addition to the W.H.S. athletic program, is quite a game. The track follows a course through open country, woods, creeks, over fences and other obstacles for a rough two and a half miles. Runners risk the possibility of falling over logs or into stump-holes if they don’t watch their step. Definitely not a spectator sport, cross-country has one great plus going for it: every team member gets to participate. The fastest runner on each team forms the “front line’’ with his teammates lined up behind him. This is not a sport for the physically unfit. Scoring a cross-country meet is basically the same as scoring a golf match; the lowest score wins. The first man across the finish line scores one point for his team, the second man scores two, etc. Some of the top team members are Frank Hope, Vic Knight, Mike Boley, Keith Hucks, Morris Janey, Larry Michaels and Michael Moses. 53 George Goes to College at Homecoming 71 The theme of the ’71 Homecoming was “‘George Goes to College.’ The service clubs and other organi- zations sponsored Homecoming activities. The cheerleaders sponsored a bonfire rally for the game. The program featured cheers, chants, and the burning of the Pirate. The parade featured floats by all of the service clubs, and sponsors for all organizations. Several dress-ups were also entered. The Civitan float won first prize in the judging. The choral department presented the Homecoming Show. A show about school and graduation. Vickie Walker was announced as homecoming queen at the show. The main event was the game with Page. The Bull- dogs tied the Pirates after a rally in the second half. 54 Space anomnnnnennennnnanereee OS psniieat 55 Cheerleaders burn pirate; 56 Chorus Graduates George Get 57 Attendants Add Glam (Left, Top) Patty Price, Spencer Trollinger (Right, Bottom) Margret Ann Parker, Steve Messick 58 (Left, Top) Vickie Neal, Phil Sumner (Right, Bottom) Carol Brewer, Bill Wood 59 . sss Senne nem Walker and Cowan Reign At Homecoming (Opposite, Top) Vickie Walker (Opposite, Bottom) Angelique Cowan, David Skeels (Left, Top) Joyce Warren, Alfred Garland (Right, Bottom) Lisa Scott, Karl Kewatt 61 Court, Sponsors Presented at Half of Tie Game 62 s See m5 w teen” Fr eat Fg Club Sponsors Ride In Parade ets oe (Upper left) Debbie Humble, Spanish National Honor Society; (Lower left) Pat Owens, Orchestra; (Upper right) Molly Hall, Ju- nior Class; (Lower right) Anita Staley, Spanish Club. 64 if q (Upper left) Frankie Rippy, Band; (Middle left) Jill Koury, Na- tional Honor Society; (Lower left) Martha Lee Marvin, Monogram Club; (Upper right) Gayle Poteat, Sophomore Class; (Lower right) Anne Saunders, Keyette Club. =F } —_— a er - I sane aampeseesdlceesacietelnceseoseeredt-—comecoenrci-ocecaemncertlstceneercdlremenseesdie-onteenedtoascrrredimcesenened i Scecamedlicepetesdli-caenereEivericionticeeearsl . —f— -—F-—— — = = Ss Ss SS Ss = Se Sees See eee ee eee See ee ee See ee ——$ — 4 = SS SS SS SS ES Se SS SS SS = = = SS SS Se Se Se Se Se Se Se Se = ee See =i Ss aes oes Soe eee eee Sees See eee See ee ee = SES Se Se Se Ee Se ee Ee ee ES ES = aa See Se See ee Ei Ione Lindley (upper left) French Club; Patricia Ivey (lower left) Civinette Club; Julia Ogden (upper right) AFS Club; Betty Sue Knox (middle right) Key Club; Debbie Hoyle (lower right) Civitan Club. 66 LS | ok ee Delores Hancock (upper left) Bible Club; Rosemary Harris (lower left) Doe-Wah-Jack Staff; Cindy Shue (upper right) Boot Girls; Kathy Harris (lower right) Laurelette Club. The Emergency School Assistance Program (ESAP) strives to ease the pains of desegregation. The government supplies funds for ESAP to promote projects such as PLAY which increases understanding between black and white students. Project PLAY provides recreational activity to occupy students’ free time before school and after lunch. The Student- Faculty Affairs Committee serves as a forum in which students can discuss changes in administration policies. The committee consists of seven students and the seven faculty department heads. The Student- Faculty Affairs Committee is in charge of the Mini- Spectacular, a two-day break after exams during which students take eight mini-courses to explore new fields of learning. The Council has an enrollment of 23 clubs and organizations; all service clubs are included. At ICC meetings, club repre- sentatives discuss individual and collective projects. The Inter-Club Council is best known for its prepa- ration and presentation of the annual Homecoming Parade. The theme for this year’s Homecoming was “George Goes To College.” The parade consisted of 54 units, including cheerleaders, band members, club sponsors, floats, and dressed-up cars. A new function of the Council this year is the main- tenance of school grounds. Each service club is re- sponsible for upkeep one month out of the school year. For the second semester, the Inter-Club Council has taken on the task of writing a new constitution. It will include all revised rules and designated pro- cedures. The story, based on the Faust Legend, deals with a man who sells his soul to the devil in return for being able to help the Senators beat the Yankees. The production featured Robert Waller as Joe Boyd, who sells his soul to the devil, and Stan Alex- ander as Mr. Applegate or the devil. Tom Lunsford was the Senators’ manager. Julie Bowden played Lola including her feature performance of ‘‘Whatever Lola Wants, Lola Gets”. The play was under the direction of Mr. Erving Co- vert. Being well received by the audience, the play was held over for one night’s performance. 191 “Fast to the Sun” Is Theme For ’71 Prom On May 1, 1971, the Williams Juniors and Seniors, and for the first time some outside guests, were taken “East to the Sun”. Upon entering, the guests crossed over a bridge leading into the main area. Next to the bridge was a large waterfall. Also featured were the pegoda in the center, the statue of Budda, and the large dragon in the back. Colored lights and Japanese lanterns also enhanced the Oriental atmosphere. Music was pro- vided by Clear Smoke. Imagination and hard work combined to create the best prom ever at WHS. 192 193 Ismael Becomes Involved in Williams Activities Ismael Camargo is the 1971-1972 exchange student for the American Field Service. The Burlington Chapter has sponsored a student here for the past three years. Ismael, from Columbia, South America, lives with the Roy Harris family here. His “‘sisters’’ are Audrey, a junior, and Kathy, a senior. A member of the Junior Civitan Club, Ismael has found the people of Burlington very warm and receptive to him. He has enjoyed visiting different churches. Mrs. Weston’s English class invited Ismael to accompany them to Williamsburg, Va. This trip was very meaningful to him. Ismael’s American family is indebted to Mrs. Weston and Mr. Temple for helping him adjust to the language and customs of this country. io 3 oe i pote? ie SRR Wi aa Ss 194 195 Project Bulldog Nears Completion at Press Time 197 Project Bulldog was started in the fall in memory of all the students who have died while here at Williams and also Mr. Howard Mullis, or Mr. Bulldog as he was called. The inspiration for the project came from an article in the Raleigh News and Observer, which pictured a sculpture of a ram done by Norman Keller of Greenville, North Carolina, for Havelock, High School. At the time the article appeared the thought came to mind to have a bulldog made for WHS in the same manner. Mr. Jerry M. Wilder, Drafting teacher and Track Coach, headed the project. Thanks to the tremendous effort put out by stu- dents, service clubs, and various people around town, Project Bulldog was a big success.
