What sustains the enthusiasm of both participants and spectators is a realistic emphasis which neither overshadows, nor permits itself to be overshadowed by, other phases of academic and extracurricular life. Corollary to this is a decision to restrict post-season tournament competition, upheld this past year. Within the system itself, a balanced stratification provides opportunities for the more casually inclined through a highly-developed and fiercely competitive intramural schedule, involving the same sports represented on the intercollegiate level. The freshman and varsity teams, on the other hand, attract the more serious athlete who is willing to sacrifice more in terms of his time and of himself, the Williams philosophy of sport elicits a personal dedication without demanding it as routine. The Williams athletic program is set up, then, to cater to interests and to provide a competitive outlet for those interests on whatever level a student may choose. The iustification for this approach is aptly drawn from the response to it-a high percentage of participation on every level. The football story was 7-0-1, including a crushing victory at Wesleyan cmd a long-awaited win over Amherst. Only an opening tie with Trinity at T3-13 stopped the Ephmen short of perfection, this game was played without co-captain and Dallas draftee Bill Drummond. Standout season performances were turned in by sophomore Jack Maitland, Unsung Hero Randy Dygert, John Petke, Ross Wilson, Charlie Bradbury, and John Hayes, who conquered Middlebury as Bradbury's substitute. Soccer returned in 'I967 with a critical weakness in the goal, but still carved a .500 season from a difficult schedule. Wesleyan fell 3-0, but Amherst's fast forward line posted their own 3-0 the following week in spite of the efforts of seniors Healy, McFadden, and Blanchard. Coach Tony Plansky's harriers, led by seniors Maynard and Lux, captured the Little Three cross-country crown to cap a fine season and make it two out of three over Amherst at homecoming. Consistent run- ners on the seniors' heels were George Scarola and Bran Potter. Corwin, Muitlcnd, Bradbury Dygerr Coach DeLisser, Brcmgdon .. Xen'-j 1 ' 1 I'- ' N X 31, 1.5 f .4 Q-1 -,, 93 i Jig. Guard WPI Wesleyon Amherst Graduation hurt the 1968 hockey team everywhere, as a result the talents of those who remained were stretched thin in an attempt to compensate. Jim Roe led the team, but defensive chores cut his scoring, other mainstays were Wies, West, Comstock, and Blodgett. Basketball, on the other hand, returned with a strong senior squad- Healy, Untereker, Drummond, and Ervin. Drummond scored, sophomore Dick Travers rebounded, but Bowdoin edged out a win, an injury to Healy contributed to losses to Amherst and A.I.C. for a 17-3 mark. The varsity matmen, trimmed by iniuries, found the going rough, however, co-captain Hall, Johnson, Poindexter, and Hitchens provided bright spots for coach Pete DeLisser through the season. The other co-captain, John Coombe, was one of the iniured, his contribution to the cause included his little brother. The ski team reached its peak at the 1968 Winter Carnival and led before wind forced cancellation of the competition. Leaders in their respective events were captain Nields, Hinderlie, Wolcott, Dunn, Larsen, and Bryan. Squash posted a highly respectable record, finishing eighth in the Nationals and winning the Little Three title. The racquet-work of captain Weller, MacMillen, Heckscher, and Means proved instrumental in this success. Heartbreak was everywhere-from graduation 1967 to a 1968 relay sans trunks, but co-captains Gardner and Carothers, supported by Macartney, Maxwell, and Reddy, bouyed a disappointing season with superior individual performances. Baseball, despite balanced inexperience, came on strong as the season progressed and narrowly missed the Little Three championship. Dependable players were captain and shortstop Bobby Quinn, Lowell Davis, Ned Williams, Kim Montgomery, and pitchers Tom Small and Bob Bower. Senior Bill Calfee and ex-quarterback Charlie Bradbury sparked a Little Three golf win, also contributing were Braman, Lynch, Gramlich, May and Jamison. Simon and Auburn captained a largely inexperienced varsity tennis team to two wins, including a victory over Amherst. Strong juniors in the wings are Cunningham and Eckerling. Track, long on distance but short in the field, went winless despite a record mile by captain Maynard and consistently good times by Lux, Dewart, Rae, and Potter. Spring rugby, literally enioying the status of a club, won every party during the season and once again bowed to traditional rival Vassar. Losing every race in their maiden season, the varsity crew nevertheless suggested by its narrow defeats that this newest sport has a bright futur for itself at Williams. .,9r?,i-ati if .52 rf Q,-'W V I X, N I m .,. Either way, the atmosphere promotes friendships that four years will not exhaust, whether the result is three years of intramurals or a block W, the essence of the introduction remains and preserves the outlook that has made Williams athletics an area of individual decision and commitment, not a winning machine. , W Ferruro -- V L Freshman soccer 1 02 lun ,- p1no97IwESLEYANI c.oAL1As IW. -. Bl E SL I ,,wu,5 ig,- Y Freshman Tennis SAF51- -,X The inauguration of the Winter Study Program this year could well be considered the academic cornerstone of the new Williams, as might be expected, the spirit dictated by Winter Study carried over into the rest of the year and into other spheres ot activity. An increasing emphasis on independence, coupled with the growing demands on men of college age, fostered both a sense of personal relevance on campus and of campus relevance to the world, the College Council, Gargoyle, and Phi Beta Kappa, as the executive senior organizations, communicated this spirit through their respective activities. Culturally, the response came in terms of more and better offerings by the Choral Society and by Cap and Bells, while the Young Democrats and Young Republicans reacted with the election year in mind. Spokesmen for the frictionless atmosphere, whether implied or expressed, were The Record, The Gulielernensian, and The Red Balloon, with leisure time increased, the Lehman Service Council, Purple Key, the Chapel Board, WCCA, and WCJA availed themselves of increased opportunities for service. Finally, a tragic death set in motion the Afro-American sponsored King Fund for expanded cultural and historical representation of the Negro on the Williams campus. The logical results and the ideal results coincide-in creating ca sense of personal value in the other world outside of Williamstown, and perhaps in making it seem not quite so other after all. cf ,lf tl' .IJ X 1'--- . ,,f ' , Q ---' --a+ -. .Y l V-T.5.,.:-Q..-Q,,,, W,- A--f , W ., , , ,.Ef..T....--, 7,L- , ,,,. ,, 1 MT 7.1:Z5gj:ij i5g-,, H zgln, . 1, , -1..t-Y.. - 5 Af 4 1116 fi +01 ,I Sv, Q ., A mf ,QTL gm iw' .LIS x 33 if ' L. ,F W-, ,LLP -'TL 22 ,w 1 3 M: T E '?' , eff A wx f If 45' . ,f v 'I F Va fag 9. 4 ,ef if am, if. Such distinguished national figures as Mrs. Lyndon B. Johnson, Bishop Pike, James Farmer, Whitney Young, and James Reston made the campus an active forum for the exchange of policy and opinion, S.D.S. was a willing partner in the political dialogue, appearing in fall and spring demonstrations and sponsoring the winter teach-in. The Pwoenix and the rag explored different areas in adding short- lived variety to the campus literary scene, and experimental theater productions hit new highs in quality and quantity in complementing the maior productions of the year- Macbeth and The Royal l-lunt of the Sun. The babbel, world's only talking room, presented Under Milkwood and continued its relaxed offerings of poetry and folk music, Cohen's Emulsion drew anxious actors and Bronfman bravos as the winner of the June Williamstown Film Festival. A March organ recital by Mr. Hill of the mathematics department joined the student concerts in an excellent program of music over the year. Fraternities pledged,'Gargoyle and Gurgle reproduced themselves. And most notably, the Winter Carnival Concert-the only one of its kind-was held. Bascom had the best parties and added some of the most relaxed Williams men to the trivia contests and Laugh-In's Nielsen, while Berkshire House contributed the co-captains of swimming and sponsored a variety of cultural events-poetry readings, string quartets, and films. Winner of the disputed Winter Carnival game room contest, this year Brooks relinquished its purely intellectual image, the first house in the Quad, Bryant, gave us the Renaissance Lecture Series and three captains-Drummond, Weller, and Trav Auburn. Carter House supplied leadership for The Record, Purple Key, Gurgle, and the College Council. Fort Daniels rose from the ashes of Fort Hoosac iust in time for a blissful green Qthat's lettucej spring and the annexation of Perry Annex. . The Petke-Wilson football tandem and Billy-Rand spread Gladdendom all over the campus, as Garfield boasted a championship softball team and hosted another in the series of sun-blessed lawn parties. Both halves of Hopkins House had a good year, reuning occasionally at social functions, contributing more than their share of J.A.'s, and receiving more than their share of transfers, and Perry answered charges of apathy by mustering for a play in The City between bridge hands. Prospect gathered overall intramural honors without sacrificing cocktail parties to training, and though Spencer spent first semester sponsoring Senator Morse, the spring was devoted to wallball. Tyler finished high in the intramural race and made the house a center for everything from formal dancing to the Bucket Crew, the men of Wood bred campus literati in an atmosphere of sensitivity and volleyball. 133 , J ,.,,j11f png: ' 'A ' is . An eminent photographer, he has rarely published books that completely wanted written text. Though sparsely worded, the Gul is published with similar intent. Words are always necessary, but at this time unequal to thanking countless student photographers, Stevens Studios, and not least, News Director Bill Tague-all of whom made negatives and prints available to the editors. We are also grateful to C.K. Roulette and the staff of Bradbury, Sayles, O'Neill-Paragon for their interest and guidance throughout the academic year.
