Received his M.A. from Williams in 1905, and his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University, where he held a Fellowship in Chemistry, in 1908. Appointed Instructor in Industrial Chemistry at the University of Illinois in 1908. Called to Williams as Instructor in Chemistry in 1909, and was made Assistant Professor in 1910, and Professor in 1917.
