In 1879, after postgraduate study at Johns Hopkins, received the degree of Ph.D. llecame assistant in Johns Hopkins in 1880. Vvas made Professor at Smith College in 1881, and in the same year was called to 1Villiams as Professor of Natural History. Received the degree of MA. from Williams in 1891. l'llected President of the American Society of Xaturalists in 1914-. Studied two years at the University of Goettingen, where he received the degree of Ph.D. Received his M.A. from Williams in 1888. In 1876 appointed Instructor in Chemistry at Amherst: which position he hcld until 1881 when he was called to Williams as Professor of Chemistry and Physics. In 1888 became Professor of Chemistry.
