In 1879, after postgraduate study at Johns Hopkins, received the degree of Ph.D. llecame assistant in Johns Hopkins in 1880. Vvas made Professor at Smith College in 1881, and in the same year was called to 1Villiams as Professor of Natural History. Professor Hewitt was called to 1Villiams in 1882 as Garfield Professor of Ancient Languages. ln 1903 hecame Lawrence Professor of Greek. In 1867 received the degree of M..-X. from Yale, and in 1888 the same degree from tvilliams.
