In 1865 was called to Olivet College, as Professor of the Latin Language, in 1872 became acting President of the same college. Was called to Lake Forest University to Professorship of Greek and Latin in 1875, and in 1877 became acting President of the University. The years 1881 and 1882 were spent abroad, at Leipsic and in Italy. Professor Hewitt was called to Williams in 1882, as Garheld Professor of Ancient Languages. The year 1892-93 was spent abroad. In I9OI he was elected acting President of Williams. Is a member of the fll li lf, 'l V, and li' .Y lu' Fraternities. Degrees are M. A., Yale, 1867, Williams, 1888, LL. D., Union, 1895. Rlcv. D., LL'fflll'L'7' in Sariolaggf Was graduated from Williams in 'the class of ,49, jf i'T and the Andover Theological Seminary in 1855. , X Became Professor of Rhetoric at Williams in 1855, and was meanwhile pastor of the church at North Pownal, Vt., until 1864. In 1874 was called to the presidency of the University of Wisconsin, and in 1887 came to Williams as lecturer on Sociology, and four years later became Professor of Political Economy, which position he held till his resignation in 1901. In 1902 he continued his course in Sociology during the First halfyear. His publications are Political Economy , A+lsthetics, Philosophy of Rhetoric, U Principles of Psychology, Science, Philoso' phy and Religion, Philosophy of English Literature, Philosophy of f. .. 1, I3
