No matter how small or how large our problems may be, we can always find a sanctuary in the understanding of Miss Shafer. Her gentle voice and attitude, her willing- ness to help us when we have problems, and her kindness are only a few of her memorable traits that will forever reserve for her a place in our hearts. SWEARINGEN, A.B., M.A., D.D. President of the College Life on a college campus is not apart from society but a part of society. The changing tempo of the world is the characteristic cadence of the campus-A-fast, insistent, irregular, chal- lenging. It is eminently desirable that we catch the subtle harmonies and delicate overtones of life, as well as those motifs which boldly and blatantly direct attention to themselves. To develop adequate maturity, a girl must be intellectually alert to, and understanding of the world about her. She must respect her fellows because of their human worth. She must respond to a world of spiritual values and experience its power. She must achieve the poise which comes from an understanding of truth. She must be vocationally equipped to find happiness through service. TILFORD T. SWEARINGEN Page 6' W. MARSHON DEPOISTER A.B., M.A., B.D., A.M., Ph.D. Dean of the College Two of Miss Frye's favorite quota- tions express her feelings thus: Have courage for the great sorrows of life and patience for the small ones, and when you have laboriously accom- plished your daily task, go to sleep in peace. God is awake. With righteousness in the heart, there will be beauty in the character. With beauty in the character, there will be harmony in the home. With har- mony in the home, there will be order in the nation. With order in the nation, there will be peace in the world. Page 9 Hello, girls! It is a great privilege to write a note of greeting to you on the occasion of the publication of the 1956 WOODS ECHOES. It is a solemn and sacred moment when one has the privilege of calling another his friend. You have made many friends at the Woods. Many of these friendships will stay with you for the balance of your life. May I also call you my friends? I cherish the privilege of being a wise coun- selor and friend for you, a friendship which I sincerely hope will continue steadfastly through all the years to come, no matter where our respective paths may lead us. Staff P1188 32 Remember, Seniors On Commencement Day, when you pass through those gates as a graduate, you carry in your hearts the friendships and memories of your life here, but you will leave behind the spirit of your class embedded in everything you, as seniors, have done. Will you remember that first day back on campus, the hurried excitement of greeting old friendsvwelcoming your little sisters and making them feel at home in your old junior dorms- the pride you felt when you walked on the grass and Senior Bridge and knew it was finally yours for a year-that 5:00 A.M. march guiding the juniors to the lake for help dayl'-preparing class schedules and being unable to avoid an 8:00 class-the after hour talks when you had two or more tests the next day-the hall parties, with silly gifts at Christmas time? Can you ever forget that fire whistle when your hair was full of suds-trying to figure a way out of going to required gatherings-all the afternoons spent in the tea room, trumping your partner's ace--decorating for dances on Saturday morning, or watching the decorations fall down the night before--the frat serenades in the moonlight? Remember your last spring on campus-your senior privileges-twilight dating-the be- loved fence being removed-the picnics at Sand Rock and Beck's Bay-gulping down ice tea on the sun deck, while trying to get a tan-the frantic rush of getting everything completed by graduation? Remember the lost feeling you had while giving senior privileges to the juniors down by Senior Lake----the way you only heard parts of the talks, as your heart was filled with so many events that would only be memories now-the sense of loss you had as you sat around the lake- the tears-the goodbyes? SENIOR ALMA MATER Dear old Alma Mater, Thy daughters praise thy name. We, thy senior daughters, Love thy halls of fame. Soon we will be going. But we'll ever be Faithful, and tender, and loyal, William Woods, to thee. Page 43 Remember, Juniors You, the Juniors, have experienced a beginning that has opened the way to many friendships and events that will enrich your life and give you pleasant memories. Can you remember your first impressions as you approached the campus-the bridge-the lake-Jones hall-meeting your roommate-realizing you were not alone in this new adventure of college life-unpacking-and rushing madly to scheduled tests on time? Will you remember your first glimpse of the Westminster men-how handsome, or otherwise, they looked at the Rat Race-that next blind date-trying to remember names of possible dates for the next vic dance-hanging out windows seeing the boys get thrown into the lake-the first pinning serenade at your dorm? Remember your impatience at hall meetings-the planning for help day skits-trying to anticipate the arrival of the seniors on help day and the shock of being awakened by their paddles on the stairs? Remember rushing to class and finding the halls empty after the tardy bell-your first col- lege night- gab sessions after lights out-grabbing the last cookies at teas and receptions? Can you remember how old and secure you felt in the spring after seven months at W.W.C.- looking forward to receiving senior privileges-the march to Baccalaureate-the joy you felt when you walked on the grass and bridge after the Ivy Chain? Remember, Juniors, this year is a beginning-a beginning of something you will cherish all your lives. Next year, your senior year at William Woods, will be the end of your life here, but it will mark the beginning of your life as a woman. Queens The night of the WOODS ECHOES style show will always live in the memories of each Willie. But more important than the ex- citing and entertaining show was the crowning of our queens. An outstanding ability in grades and personal achievement gained for Donna Tschappat the honor of Academic Queen. A sparkling personality, a rare sense of humor, and a shining smile made Carol Olmsted our Ideal girl. Because of her great initiative and qualities of leadership, Margo Oslund was chosen Service Queen. Sparkly brown eyes, fair skin coupled with poise and charm won Norma Amos the title of Beauty Queen. Her attendants were Shelba Baker, Ruth Ann Baldwin, Judy Hoots, Patsy Bain, and Nancy Finnegan. A warm personality, vivaciousness, and a friendly hello won Harriet Hayes our votes for Popularity Queen. Sportsmanship, skill, and participation in sports characterized Imogene Dalton as our Athletic Queen. Dark haired Ann Sandin was our Town Queen. Cooperation in activities on campus and her captivating personality make her an ideal choice. The Cooperative Government Association represents to every William Woods student one of the most important and vital aspects that of student participation in the governing of of college life, the school. It is through the C.G.A. that the students first become acquainted with the demo- cratic influences and intelligent citizenship to be found on the campus. Following her enrollment in the College, every girl auto- matically becomes a member of this organization. Phi Theta Kappa One important organization on campus is the Eta chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the national scholar- ship fraternity for junior colleges. To be eligible for membership, a student must be in the upper ten per cent of her class and have an S average in at least twelve hours of liberal arts work. The club sponsors a convocation each year in which new members are tapped. The activities of the club are picnics, a banquet, conventions, and the regular monthly meetings. The sponsors are Mrs. Ewbank and Mr. Larson. Page 62 Phi Beta Phi Beta, a national speech and music fraternity for junior and senior colleges, offers membership to those girls who are majoring in music or speech and who meet the grade requirements. Some of the Phi Betas' most cherished memories will be of the Fall tea given for prospective members, the program given for the State Mental Insti- tution on Valentine's Day, and the Faculty Auction. Alpha Iota Alpha Iota, the International Honorary Secretarial Sorority on campus, had a new sponsor this year, Mrs. Grace McKissick. Un- der the guidance of its ofiicers, Alpha Iota pledged new members for next year and initiated them in solemn ceremony. It is hoped that Alpha Iota will continue its aims on this campus-to foster the friendship, loyalty, and efficiency of its members. Y.W.C.A. Throughout the year the Y's student cabinet organizes social and religious activities which will be of interest to the entire student body. We will always cherish the memories of our Valentine dance, the seasonal vespers, sales, and contributions to charitable or- ganizations. The purpose of our Y.W.C.A. is to promote Christian fellowship on our Campus. I.R.C. The International Relations Club, one of the largest groups on campus, is organized for the purpose of promoting interest in other countries as Well as our own. The Club sponsors movies, forums, and guest speakers. During the meetings there are usually student speakers and discussion. At the end of the year a banquet was held at the Fulton Country Club with Professor Philblad from Sweden as guest speaker. The faculty sponsor is Mrs. Long. Page D'-I Woods Echoes Under the guidance of Mr. Arthur Leible, this year's WOODS ECHOES Staff has endeavored to compile a book that we hope every- one will enjoy. Although we, on the staff, have worked hard on this yearbook, it has been a stimulating experience. All of us now hope that you, the reader, will appreci- ate this reminder of our days to- gether at William Woods College. Green Owl The student newspaper, THE GREEN OWL, is published semi- monthly by a group of junior students. This year's paper was one of change. A new plan of choosing editors to serve from January to january was inagu- rated. Its primary aim is to publish important news on and off campus concerning William Woods College. The advisor is Miss Wilma Murrow. Page 65 First row: Merline Selonke Art Ed., Donna Tschappat Ed., Sonnie Mackey Make-up Ed., Marilyn Harris Copy Ed. Brushes The Brushes is the honorary art organization at William Woods. All art majors with an S average in art and a passing grade in all other subjects are eligible for membership in the Brushes. The club holds regular business and craft meetings throughout the year, and it sponsors the Brushes Ball at which a Snow King is crowned in a winter wonderland setting. Glee Club What are campus memories without a Glee Club? Composed of selected juniors and seniors, the Glee Club was active this year. Its chief duty was its spring con- cert tour. This year the girls went to St. Louis and other sur- rounding areas. In addition to this, the group sang in the Fulton Kiwanis Club Show and the annual Christmas Vespers with the co- operation of the Westminster Glee Club. The director is Mr. Paul Jackson. Page 66 Water Willies Swimming skill try-outs de- termine who will be members in this organization of Water Willies. Under the direction and sponsor- ship of Miss Wilma Murrow and Miss Mary Frye, this group gave two aquacade shows this year. The first was to entertain the Dads on their day, and the second show, called Far Away Places, was presented in the spring to add to the events of Mothers' Day. This talented group spends lots of time and energy in making its shows performances of perfection. Paddock Club All horse lovers on campus aspire to become members of the Paddock Club. However, merely loving horses does not make one eligible. A girl must be able to ride exception- ally well and must have a thorough knowledge of horses and riding, Throughout the school year the members attended horse sales, the American Royal, and picnics. Their big event was the presen- tation of their Spring Horse Show, an annual entertainment presented near the end of school. The girls attended tournaments at Kan- sas State University, and Kirks- ville, Mo. This year, with the topic of Guaranteed Annual Wage, proved to be a very prosperous and enjoyable project for the De- bate Club. Campus Players Membership in the Campus Players is open to all students who are primarily interested in dra- matics. In order to become a member of this organization, a student must maintain a scholastic average of HM . She must have spent twenty hours working in some capacity in play production. Mr. Herbert Joys is the faculty sponsor of Campus Players and is also director of all plays. This year there were two major pro- ductions. They were East Lynne, a melodrama, and The Curious Savage, a comedy, which was produced on Mother's Day week end. Page 68 1 -- ,, 3. ,-. , xg xxx. ' , 5 - . X - Q 2 ...TM ' -1.,'jfL?'. r . .
