Destruction of the Spring Creek Boarding School building by fire in 1853 provided a motive for constructing a liberal arts college in Oskaloosa. The Society of Friends in 1866 volunteered cooperation and financial backing for the venture and the doors of Union College were finally opened on September 23, 1873. With a registration of over 200 students to 5 faculty members, only 19 actually qualified for college courses. Facing the challenge of a new adventure, Presidents Woody and Morgan laid the foundation of educational instruction at Penn. Adapted to the outlet of meeting needs of western people, the college aimed for a positively Christian program that was non-sectarian in character. 1879 witnessed the election of Benjamin Trueblood to the presidency, and educational emphasis shifted to instruc- tion by scholarly excellence. New departments of art and music were added to the curriculum along with the beginnings of an elective system. 1400 library volumes were termed insufficient and new drives for books and equipment were begun. Under Rosenberger's administration, steady, conservative progress was continued with strong emphasis on liberal arts and religion. Lab equipment was added, including electricity for chemistry and physics classrooms, and the library was enlarged. Along with the growing number of electives, the physical education department was added. In 1904 the semester plan was adopted in place of the older tri-quarter system. The Aurora, first yearbook publication, appeared in 1893 while the Penn Chronicle had came on the scene previously in January, 1886. Completed in 1873, Old Main furnished the west wing of the college building complex and housed the first classes. Construction of the central section was concluded in 1877 while the east Wing failed to reach completion until 1890. Consisting of three floors and a basement, the large first floor room possessed a seating capacity of over 100 and was utilized for study hall and chapel. Classrooms filled the second floor while the third level housed students and faculty as well as the library. Dining facilities and janitor's quarters were centered in the basement along with space for indoor activities. Baseball was the first organized sport, beginning in 1874 while football appeared sometime around 1892. Only a year before, the first field day for track had been organized. Basketball failed to enter the Penn curriculum until 1900, and 1907 saw a new gymnasium added to campus scenery. 5 s A Time to Build .. May 27, 1916 witnessed the complete destruction of the college building by fire and the loss of two lives. Discovered by students who had rooms on the third floor, the flames reached a 40-gallon tank of alcohol, exploding and scattering liquid fire in all directions. Efforts of firemen were unavailing due to insufficient water pressure. The two deaths resulted from the crash of the 4-ton college bell through the main building, burying the business manager and freshman who had been desperately trying to rescue college records. 580,000 to f5l00,000 damage was assessed to the fire, with the central section completely wrecked, the east wing ruined and the west wing extensively burned. Only 322,000 was covered by insur- ance. Efforts were executed to rebuild the college and funds were solicited immediately. By August 5, 1916, over S400,000 had been raised. Land for a future campus had been donated by Charles and Albert Johnson in 1898. Because it allowed room for greater expansion, the 40-acre tract just north of the old location became the new campus site. Construction of a new modern, thoroughly equipped plant was begun, and Penn College became one of the finest facilities for small colleges in Iowa. With the financial disaster of 1929 and pursuing Depression years, Penn, bordering on bankruptcy, suffered the loss of its endowment, North Central Association accreditation and all prestige. The ensuing result was necessarily a constantly changing curriculum, decrease in the number of course of- ferings and a shrinking staff. Enrollment remained fairly stable, probably due to the col- lege's acceptance of produce on tuition, work in lieu of tui- tion and time payments for the balance. The trend of educa- tion was toward a more general instruction. By 1933 reorgan- ization of the institution was required to stem off financial disaster, and the college officially became William Penn Col- lege. 1. ,fri X f ix .ip 2, ' fx QX, sf 4 'lf' xx BBN A f -ff . be -rg., ...X ' ts ,fx 98.2 1 Awti VY, bw my K ' 4, K. 6 - ,.x- 7 x ,fx ?T5.w 4 5. With the eruption of World War I, many Yankee boysw went off to win the war. To commemorate the sacrifice of those who failed to return from their grim mission, the southeast and southwest gateways were presented to the college by the classes of 1918, 1919 and 1920. During the dark times of the depression years, the gift of a new chapel by Mrs. Mary E. Spencer inspired confidence in the future of the college. Constructed in memory of H.L. Spencer, a prominent Oskaloosa businessman, the chapel was dedicated February 18, 1923. A 1922 saw the organization of the lowa football conference with Penn College as a charter member. By 1930, Penn had managed to grab the conference title. A memorial gift in the form of a 300-acre farm was presented to the college after World War Il by Mrs. Ella Peasley in memory of her husband who attended Penn during the early l880's. Adjoining the campus, the farm also provided the Gibbs House for the co1lege's use. Redecorated and refurnished, Peasley Hall provided the first menls dorm for the new campus. Though first leased as a dairy farm, the land later was subdivided into a housing section with 15 acres re- served for campus expansion and over 26 acres for natural woods. The Peasley Gift was valued at 347,000 The l940,s presented Penn with its greatest and most critical test. By the l950's, a reshaping of the program on the basis of lessons learned in experiences of success and failure was undertaken. With the sale of the old gym in 1946 to a church for use as a parochial school, a large room on the ground floor of Penn Hall was used for indoor sports. 1956 witnessed the reality of a new college gymnasium as part of a cooperative city-college operation. The city's need for a new senior high school helped aid the cause when land for the high school campus was contributed by the college and use of the gym was offered for varsity games. By 1960, William Penn College regained its N.C.A. accreditation and continued to improve and expand. A new boys' dorm valued at S600,000 was completed by 1963, replacing the old surplus G.l. units north of the heating plant. Peasley Hall was then refurnished to accommodate the growing Fine Arts department and become Griffith Hall. 1.93 in A-.gi iz' iif?SW?Eii23!Q:f.T'e, 1 1 rf. f Time to Endure . . . By the summer of 1964, the 90th anniversary campaign goal of S750,000 was reached and the new Wilcox Library became a reality. The Industrial Arts Department had gained new classrooms by 1962 and 1964 while the rebuilding of the Kilgen organ in Spencer Chapel was also finally accomplished. Since 1964, four large additions have been completed, including the Dana Atkins Memorial Union in 1966. The new student center filled the need for a more adequate food serv- ice forthe school. By the next year, Eltse Dorm had been con- structed to accommodate upperclass men and women, allow- ing Watson Hall to be used essentially for incoming freshman boys. The gym annex was finished by 1970, replacing old G.l. units which had been used for offices and dressing rooms. Modernization of the natural science sections of Penn Hall helped maintain Pennls high degree of scholarship. Since 1953, Penn has been subject to a steady rise in enroll- ment which was accelerated by the addition of the gym in 1957 and the acquisition of N.C.A. accreditation in 1960. Today Penn looks forward with hope and confidence to the future, seeking a proper balance between specialization and culture. Construction of the Edwin McGrew Fine Arts Center awaits approval of final plans while campus beautification continues with the addition of several trees in various sites. W--.
