Watson November 6, 1958 Dear Friends: Teamwork is the secret of success in every activity of life--and teamwork is based on understanding and confi- dence. The players must understand each other and their coach and have confidence if success is to be achieved. Another name for confidence is faith, and we read that faith is the substance of things hoped for. So, here at Penn we are a team that expects to win in every phase of our college enterprise. We are now engaged in the toughest game of our schedule. The first half is not over yet and we are winning. However, we must keep up the good work to be assured of victory. Like William Penn, our college's patron saint, we need to be honest and intelligent in business, politics, education and religion. With understanding and confidence in each other and God, we push forward together toward victory. Sincerely, ,KQ.Zcf.:af7w S. A. Watson President SAW: slf qs M -is ' H .V,A. 9 uv '! H a , .fn z. This is evidenced not only by the remarkable 7-2 record but also by the host of broken and tied records and the high ranking of the Pennmen all season in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletic statistics. The Penn gridders scored 212 points during the season to eclipse the old mark of 166 set back in 19095 they won seven games during the season to break the old record of six set in 1909, and tied in 19303 they defeated Central to extend to 22 the most games won by Penn over a single opponent, and Jack Boender scored 102 points for a new Ranger individual scoring record. Penn compiled some astounding individual and team statis- tics in racking up this brilliant record. Individually, Boender's net rushing yardage averages 105.8 yards per game not only to lead the Range rs but to put him up among the national leaders in the NAIA. Jerry Doonan picked up 352 yards rushing while Wayne Criss got 267 and Berry Johnson 125. ln passing, Johnson completed 15 of 47 for 371 yards and 3 touchdowns while Pal- mer hit on 5 of 10 for 104 yards and two scores. The Drawing Room was suitably decorated to suit the occasion. Duane Kuntz served as master of ceremonies, The program opened with a style show of the latest, modeled by several freshman boys. Carol Carson and Del Coppinger were chosen to reign as King and Queen of Hearts. This was fol- lowed by a skit featuring Maxine Watson as an eight year old. As the evening progressed, capsule pals were revealed. To complete the program Dr. Griffith, Freyd Heyn, and Duane Kuntz presented musical selections which were followed by a mock shotgun wedding. Refreshments of punch and cookies were served. King Del Coppinger and Queen Carol Carson Chapels Our chapel periods this year have been of outstanding quality. We have had a good variety of programs. Businessmen from the community, ministers from various churches, and students have spoken to us to enrich our whole educational plan here at Penn. Probably the highlight of the chapel periods this year was the Christmas candlelight service. This service was sponsored by the freshman class and was held at 6:30 a.m. December 19. This impressive service added a signifi- cant and warm meaning to the spirit of Christmas. Messiah Handel's Messiah was presented in excellent form Sunday afternoon, December 19, in Spencer Memorial Chapel by the Penn Choir, the C. E. I. Choir, and singer of the community. Selected choruses from the Messiah were presented by the group of 125 as well as many of the solos from the oratorio. Rev. W. W. Tink directed the choir, with Janet Hartman, Nina Whittlesey, and Richard Klein singing the solos. ' LEONARD ROSE, CELLIST Community Concerts The Community Concert Association helps to extend the cultural benefits of the college by presenting a series of concerts for members of this assoc- iation. This year the association presented five concerts. The first of these fea- tured Harry John Brown and the Manhattan Concert Orchestra on November 10, 1958. This orchestra presented a wide variety of numbe rs ranging from early classics to contemporary show hits which were well received by a re- sponsive audience. On January 15, 1959, Leonard Rose, cellist provided an enjoyable concert. Leonard Rose has become one of the master virtuosi of the day and has appeared in tours all over the country and will appear in Europe this fall. February 28, 1959, Theodore Lettvin, pianist, was featured to an appreciative audience. The final concert of this series was conducted on March 31, 1959, when the Chanticleers presented their program to an en- thusiastic audience. The Bohemian Girl A brilliant climax to Fine Arts Week was the presentation of the light opera, The Bohemian Girl, by the Penn music department and choir. The opera was presented May 9, 1958 in Spencer Memorial Chapel under the di- rection of Dr. Charles Griffith. The Bohemian Girl is the story of Arline, a gypsy girl, who is reared in a gypsy camp and falls in love with Thaddeus. After a period of years the Count recognizes his long lost daughter and takes her home. Arline still loves Thaddeus and finally the Count consents to their marriage. Leading roles were played by John Bissett as Count Arnheim, Gale Mor ris as Thaddeus, Mary Steddom as Arline, and Janet Hartman as the Queen Others in the cast were Jerry Main, Elwin Wines, Mark Mosteller, Robert Street, Cherisse Scott, Joyce Rose, and members of the choir. May Day One of the outstanding features of Fine Arts Week is the traditional May Day program. Joan Savage was elected May Day Queen for 1958 and Charles Scott, Jr., was the Cardinal for the festivities. The Queen's attendants were Lela Wines and Dorothy Kenoyer Hurst. Cherisse Scott and Sandra Micklewright served as flower girls with Stephen Sav- age as a crown bearer. The winding of the May Pole by several Penn Girls in pastel formals added much to the occasion. Baccalaureate-Commencement 1 958 The Baccalaureate service of William Penn College was held on Sunday, May 25, 1958, in Spencer Memorial Chapel. President Charles S. Ball gave the address. An anthem was sung by the Penn College Choir under the direction of Dr. Charles L. Griffith. Harvey H.
