966 Published By The Senior Class High Point, North CaroHna WILLIAM PENN HIGH SCHOOL Dear William Penn, with voices ringing Sing we thy praises ever, Sing we thy praises and thy glory. Where ' er we go, what ' er we do, We ' ll always sing thy praises. Upon this hill we love so well, Moments happy have we spent. Yet light we ' ve gleamed, and light we ' ll carry. Where ' er we go, what ' er we do. Thy light we ' ll ever carry. To William Penn we pledge allegiance To cherish and defend her; To wave her colors high, and higher. Where ' er we go, what ' er we do. Her colors wave we higher. S. E. Burford 3 O oreojorcT Long before students from the junior high school are ready to enter Penn, one can hear them singing lustily: Dear William Penn and each one looks longingly to that time when he will proudly hail the blue and white and shout: We are the tigers! The mighty, mighty TIGERS! As we pause here, to reflect, it is easy to recall the many reasons why so many hold Penn so dear. There are helpful, understanding administrators; kind, interested, well- qualified teachers; a vast store-house of knowledge; many opportunities to participate in a variety of extra-curricular activities; a vast array of experi- ences through which we are able to apply the knowledge gained; fellowship with students and teachers; hard work, delightful play. At times we have seemed unresponsive and unappreciative, but we were groping to find our way. We have learned our lessons well, adjustments have been made and we have been challenged to achieve higher standards. We shall always feel grateful to William Penn that we were privileged to have passed this way. 4 Gon en s He comes earliest and stays latest; is never too hurried to stop and explain or counsel with students. He is chairman of the mathematics department and of the senior sponsors, coordinator of visual aids, advisor to the mathematics and science club and the Hi-Y, homeroom advisor of 12-1, a member of the Student Activities Committee, and he performs a host of other duties. He is a diligent worker, a delightful personality, a loyal friend, and a devoted teacher. For these reasons the 1965 Pennpoint is dedicated to Mr. H. L. Hawkins. 6 Since Dr, Dean Pruette became super- intendent of the High Point City Schools, we have made notable progress. He is very ably assisted by Dr. Thayer and Mrs. Lewis, and supported by the High Point Board of Education . Mrs. Lewis Dr. Dean B. They were active participants in all phases of high school life, as they adjusted beautifully to their new home base. They are active members of many organizations, and they have displayed a variety of talents. They look back happily to homecoming prepar- ations, the packing of their Thanksgiving box and their Christmas parties. CLASS OFFICERS ' ' Uwinfusion your uess is as oocf as ours! Accordingly Penn seniors are to be found giving of their time and efforts not only to their school, but to their community as well. The senior year with its satisfactions as well as disappointments has been best of all our years. Our cares have simply strengthened us for the years ahead. Seniors were fortunate to have been capably piloted by: Virginia Dunlap, president; Frede- rick Johnson, vice-president; Sandra Hutton, secretary; and Sandra Mangum, treasurer. 1r. H. L. That the program accomplishes its aim is evidenced by the team efforts and the mighty roar, We are the Tigers , heard each time the team takes to the field or floor. A favorite springtime sport is tennis. This team is rated very highly among those of this area. Physical Education girls enjoy archery and croquet. The Modern Dance Club per- forms at many school and com- munity functions. The Future Business Leaders of America are stu- dents who are in- terested in business careers. One of the newest, yet most popular organizations in our School is the Modern Music Masters. Girls get the opportunity to Follow the Open Road by membership in Girl Scout Troops 26 and 62. Almost all orders and directions in our building have been rewritten in Spanish by the Spanish Club. Membership in the Science and Mathematics Club gives students the opportunity to pur- sue excellence. The Tri-Hi-Y, female arm of the YMCA gives members the opportunity to serve as well as to enjoy. Teenage Division of the YWCA is the Y-Teens, Pictured here is the Starlight Club (11th Grade Y-Teens). Members of the Projectionist Club, along with their Sponsor, supervise Audio-Visual equipment and operate same. The School Pa- trols are responsible for keeping order in our halls and assem- bly and for keeping down confusion in the cafeteria. The most coveted honor which comes to a student at Penn is the selection ot that stuaent as a member of the National Honor Society. Selection is based upon scholarship, leadership, character and service. The Tenth Grade Y-Teens. J The High Point Youth Council on Civic Affairs which is made up of representatives of each of our local high schools and is sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Department, It is concerned with the problems of teenagers. The William Penn sponsors many events during the year. - Among the perennials are Teacher Appreci- ation Day, Religious Emphasis Week and the selection of Miss William Penn. This year we sponsored the District Spring Conference. The dynamic Future Teachers of America is composed of students who look to teaching as their life ' s work. An English class gets enrichment and enjoyment from reading a selection in literature. A modern foreign language class makes use of a modern language laboratory. Science students search for the hidden wonders of nature while others write up their findings. Mathematics students get an assist from their instructor. This typing class gets an exercise in speed under the watchful eye of the instructor. Social Studies students gain a more accurate knowledge of the world in which we live. 82 Mrs. Benicia Hernandez amuses a group of teachers with a Cuban anecdote. Counsellor, Mrs. E. G. Hughes assists students studying college catalogs. Courses in physical science, biology, chemistry and physics are taught by Mr. H. L. Hawkins, Mrs. V. B. Kendall, Mr. B. F. Blair, Mrs. G. P. Davis and Mr. A. F. McAdoo. QOOOOOOQOQ9 OOOO0OOOO6C ® QOQOQOOeOO As the age of automation gains momentum, there is greater demand for highly skilled craftsmen. Penn seeks to prepare its students to adjust to these new demands. Vocational teachers are Mrs. H. M. Lewis, Mr. M. W. Randall, Mrs. M. E. Chess, Mrs. D. P. Bostic and Mrs. M. H. Little. English instructors place great stress on grammar, diction and correctness in written expression. They are Mrs. D. M. Dew, Mrs. Lillie M. Jones, Mrs. E. B. Stewart, Mr. F. L. Gary and Miss Cynthia McDonald. Co-sponsors of the Modern Music Makers and directors, respectively, of the band and choirs, Mr. J. Y. Bell and Miss Mary P. Browne lend their efforts to the enlivenment, enrichment and entertainment of students at Perm. Today ' s emphasis on the broad area of the hu- manities has served to give new impetus and mean- ing to the area of the social studies. Penn offers sociology, economics, social problems, world his- tory, U. S. history and government. Teachers in this area are Mr. P. R. Swann, Misses G. D. Smith, E. L. McConnell and Cynthia McDonald. From time to time it becomes our lot to serve as a proving ground for tomorrow ' s educators. Student teach- ers came this year from Bennett College and A and T College. Pianist, Mrs. Hill, plays to the delight of Pennites. The Reverend Misters Samuel Hope and John Cannon bring messages of inspiration. .; ' ;dliHiliittiSii Fourth from right is Jancie Sims in Rome while travelling with the All U.S.A. Band. Nancy Tyson and Margarettia Jackson were at Spell- man in Atlanta and Frederick Johnson was at Yale U. this past summer. Henry Pressley, Gerald Truesdale, Jacqueline Harris and Stanley Sims were participants in a summer workshop at Sedalia. These library scenes show Pennltes deep in study in the heart of the institution. Students in assembly are deeply intent as a speaker from the rostrum points out to them the value of an edu- cation. 95 raise Jjer colors i Ji ancf li Jier JsJJiere ei ' we yo wJiai e ' er we c oy Jifer co ors wave we li ier mm J Ji mm ZJ ie no (j of i ie Senior C ' ass w iic i is emfj a onecl ler p ec aes ifiis class io ivaue lic fi i ie f)anner oj J enn. c5 enior CRosie. Our deepest appreciation goes to all who in any way helped to make our task easier. We shall ever be grateful to Mr. Burford for his patient understanding; to Messrs. Morehead and Gary who masterminded our successful financial efforts; to Miss McDonald whose publicity campaign, high- lighted by the presentation of the CASE OF JUDY BAD CITIZEN helped to sell our book; to Mrs. Stewart on whom we can always call in an emergency; and especially to Mrs. Chess who collected all monies, supervised all bookkeeping and typing and relieved our adviser of many of her extra duties so that she might be free to devote her energies to this undertaking. We are further grateful to our parents, friends and our local merchants on whom we are always able to count for financial support. Our teachers are all dolls and we love them ! No where can one find a more cooperative bunch The same is true of our students who patiently posed, identified pictures and did countless other tasks. To staff members it has been a pleasure to work with you in bringing our ideas to fruition. Ronald Carter, Editor E. L. McConnell, Adviser 128
