PARKER Foreword In our search for a theme for the 19 57 Penn , we became fascinated by the parade of the many hands which have played and are playing a great part in our high school life The toiling hands of our forefathers. The helping hands of state officials, The building hands of architects, The moulding hands of teachers, The friendly hands of fellow students. The loving hands of parents, are j oining forces to give us the best that life has to offer at William Penn High School. With this in mind we chose as our theme. With These Hands. I am the Child You hold in your hand my destiny. You determine, largely, whether I shall succeed or fail. Give me, I pray you, those things that make for happiness. Your years at Penn have provided you with many experiences, some of which have been pleasant and some unpleasant. That is life. If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster and treat those two imposters just the same, then you will not have spent your years in vain. I wish to congratulate the yearbook staff. Again, you have succeeded in doing a wonderful job in publishing The Penn. Your success is the result of diligence and cooperation, two essentials in achieving any objectives. S. E. Ambition — Dietician 25 ass CTL I It was a bright September morn, back in 1952, when most of the members of our class entered William Penn as 7th graders. Afraid? Yes. I would venture to say most of us were naturally scared. We had heard so much about Mr. Burford, that most of us would almost shiver when we saw him, or politely move out of his path by running . This group was composed of individuals from different sections of High Point, not forgetting Randolph County and Florence. Although we were quite young, our first year made many indelible impressions on our minds. In the fall of 1953, we returned with new vigor to accept the challenge of the offerings of the freshman curriculum. Most of us still felt a bit timid, as we had to get accustomed to the routine of changing classes each period, not t o mention a different teacher for every class . Returning for our Sophomore year, we found that our class had tapered off considerably. After observing the mortality rate of our class, some of us really began worrying. Spring found us making plans for the Sophomore Ball, which turned out to be quite an affair. We went into our Junior year feeling we had our feet on the ground. We shall never forget how proud we felt when Carol Crawford, Shirley Foster, Shirley Lewis, Joanah Miller, Betty Steele, Kathryn Tate, Lovie Tate, Richard Johnson, Myrtle Garlington, Girlene Pressley, Sarada Simmons, Barbara Smith, Charlie Simmons, and Robert Randleman were inducted into the two highest organizations of the school, the National Honor Society and the Crown Scepter Club. We feel we excelled in the lighter vein, with our most talked about Junior and Senior Prom, given by our class for the Senior studen ts. We were also happy to have a new member join our family, James Parks, of Galax, Virginia. Days, weeks, and months flew by. Soon we found ourselves the important Seniors . Graduation time draws still closer, and now we dread the thought of leaving acquaintances, close friends, and faculty members who have not only been our teachers but real friends. Several seniors gave us many things of which to be proud. Herman Reese, was chosen by the Western District coaches to compete in an All -Star football game in Durham. Ruth Ann Watts reigned as Miss William Penn at the home- coming football game. Thus it is with fond memory that we look back on the years spent at William Penn, for those of us who have the good fortune to win this, battle look to the future with a desire to use the knowledge we have gained in tackling bigger and more complex problems.
