The original New Castle High School was the Arsenal on the Green in the heart of this historic town. Our school is definitely a part of New Castle as New Castle is a part of our school. This 1959 Penn Quill hopes to reflect the history which surrounds this school. Klan- Superintendent 0 enoels .IOSIZPH IQHLY MAN Administmtuc Awstant JOSEPH KI IC KNI R Superintendent l Perhaps the most renowned face in our school is that of our principal, Charles Smith. Friend and ad- visor to every student and faculty member, Mr. Smith has been associated with William Penn ever since 1928. It was first in the Arsenal Building that he took on the duties of a science and mathematics teacherg then, as the school grew and moved to its present location so Mr. Smith moved from teacher to principal. Even with his numerous responsibilities as head of our school, he has managed to set aside some time for many civic and community activities. He is a member of the Delaware Association of School Ad- ministrators, of which he is a past president, and of the National Education Association and the Dela- ware State Education Association. Mr. Moffett, who has been our assistant principal for the past four years, was in October of 1958 transferred to the permanent position of assistant principal of the George Read junior High School. I .F ROBERT D'ANNA XVIIIIAM READER SFZANNE MARTIN DEBORAH KING 6711155 History We, of the Class of 1959, entered our high school years not as strangers to William Penn. The majority of us, having grown up together and with the school, had attended elementary and junior high school here. Our eagerness rose as we realized that we were soon to be participating in senior high projects and activities. The next four years held promises of fun, enjoyment and excitement. Our first year was relatively quiet. One main activity, however, was that of the Freshman Frolic which was held in the Carrie Downie Cafeteria. Like- wise in the Sophomore year we had one really big event, The Sock Hop. The presidents of those years were Dick Corson and William Rees. It was actually in our junior year that activities began to increase. Mr. May guided us throughout the year both financially and spiritually. In the fall of the year we set things off with the sale' of fruit cakes for the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, then near Christmasiwe began the sale of cards and wrap- pings. This was a big item, and to Carol Reeves and Janice Poteet, our business managers, a big headache. In April of 1958 the class presented and profited by the ticket sales of the junior play, You Can't Take It With You. May brought the sale of Mother's Day cakes and with the arrival of june, the end of the school term there rose an anticipation of the coming senior year. The summer of 1958 passed quickly and it was soon that we were faced with the fact that this was our last year, this year had to be our greatest and we cer- tainly can now all agree that it has been. We had a sizable sum of money in our class, our officers and colors had been chosen, and we were now ready to really start moving. In November was held the Senior Play, Mother Is A Freshman, which turned out to be a tremendous success. Christmastime brought the annual Christmas semi-formal which proved to be quite a gala affair. There were so many wonderful things to plan and do and keep us busy, such as name cards and the excitement of trading them. Each day brought with it some new adventure and hardly before we realized it, May had arrived. Off we went to Washington, a marvelous trip and an excellent time for all who went. A little peakish and tired we arrived home to start decorations for the prom, a night that will long remain in our hearts and memories. And 'alas, before we knew it, june had come with graduation. And so we leave our school, William Penn, not strangers but rather a part of it as it has become a part of us. w Y .mm . 4 ' gw ' :NT .vqkvim 6 ww V x, , Q u 5 - 7- -...,..,. The members not only have en- deavored to bring the students and the faculty of Wfilliam Penn closer together, but also have made numerous contributions to the school with their time, suggestions, and effort. llntertainment ranked high in the busy schedule of the Council, such as their sponsoring of the Second An- mial Homecoming Dante and the Sock llopg also the Christmas season was heralded by a Student Council assembly program which featured music from the school's choral and instrumental groups, Unforgettable top was the lfaculty-Varsity basketball game, held in lfebruary. liut work was by no means slighted with these many social activities. In November the students were asked to bring in wearing apparel for the clothing drive, sponsored by the Save the Children Federationf' the re- sponse was treinendous. The members of the Student Council sorted and bagged the clothing and presented it on behalf of the students of Williaxia Penn. Again this year they raised money to foster a child and again the ri' project proved to be successful. They have truly contributed to the prestige of the school. 0Mwrs l'r'4ildtr1l.'
