Your sincere class instructions, your unselfish free-time assistance and your strong desire to have us learn have not, by any means, been overlooked. All have spoken well of your guidance of the Honor Society and the Senior Class trips. Appreciation is often hard to express and to give, so let us say thank you. Mrs. Newton, as we the Class of 1957 dedicate our Penn Quill to you. 1 X t Yi 1 fffma E57 'Fr 'rr ' J ll' Left us pr11is1' 11111' IIPIII' old 14111111 Mater IIIIVITIIIL for Willi11111 PUIIII High L1't IIS n L vi h il- smrrirrni F'.'nl ll g 'A:':: - 1 I lg sing of 1111 her glories 111111 11111lfP hw' l11111111'1's ffy Rllll Rall Rllll Hur- T' I . Judy Jennings went abroad to lstanbul. Tur- ki'Yy and lite Turner went to Colle, Germany. Judy had a very exciting sum- mer, living just as if she were a Turkish girl. While enjoying her visit, she learned much about the eustoms of the ancient eity. Joe had an equally interesting trip abroad, spending the summer with a typical German family. JIM GRAl'l.ltIlI Jl'IlY IJOUlLllIiR'l'Y Senemdlaaagfahtofuf Our high school calendar began back in 1953, when we became Freshmen. At last we were in high school with the older students. But say, didn't the upperclassmen, especially the Seniors, look smooth and sophisticated? We wondered if we'd ever reach that year of distinction. lt seemed so terribly far away. But despite our size, we actually were stepping towards leader- ship. Now we could play Junior Varsity football, sing in the A Cappella Choir, and join clubs for uSenior High only. We soon found ourselves in our Sophomore year. As many new students came to us from Colwyck School, our class grew, thus giving us many new friends. Our activities also increased as we began having class projects such as our fun-packed picnic at Rockford Tower. Individual homerooms began to hold assembly programs, with lVlr. Fenton's and Mr. Dymond's classes combining to present a program with varied talents, and Mrs. Strickbergeris room recording a Halloween spook play for the student body and a local radio station. Then it was 1955, and we who had so admired upperclassmen, had reached the first step of our main goal. We were Juniors! We began our eventful year by selling fruit cakes at Thanksgiving and Christmas. To these sales we added those of Christmas cards, surpassing the sales of the previous year's Junior Class. We went on building up our treasury by selling school pencils plus Easter and Mother's Day cakes. Aside from sales, we held successful events such as our Sock Hopf' Under the direction of Mr. Dunlap, we presented Out of the Frying Pan to a full auditorium. The year was almost gone, but not complete until we planned and decorated for the Junior-Senior Prom, thus putting a pleasant ending to our third high school year. At last it was fall once more, and we had finally arrived as the leaders of the school. It was still hard to believe that we were actually Seniors, and would soon be leaving William Penn. We began our yearly events early by presenting 'January Thaw,', a play which made the audience rock with laughter. We were kept busy ordering pictures, name cards, announcements, and other Senior musts. Sooner than expected Christmas arrived, and we gave our annual Christmas dance, all aglow with music, tinsel, and mistletoe. Our fund-raising projects had just about come to an end as we began making definite plans for our trip to Washington, D. C. Oh, the fun we had! Some- thing hilarious was forever happening. Our Senior year was quickly fading from view when we had our Prom. Ah, the memories of one's Senior Prom! We'll always remember the dreamy music, the lovely king and queen, and each one's special escort. For the lowerclassmen, this event was the final spring activity. To us it was just a reminder of the coming end of our high school days. At last graduation did come, when each one heard his name ring out clearly perhaps with a slight tear in each eye. Our days at William Penn have come to an end, but we will always have memories to remind us of the importance of the time spent here. To those who follow us, we wish as many happy and valuable days as we ourselves have experienced here. r :1-IR? Our representatives are chosen with this in mind. thus giving Williatli Penn a good governing body. During the past year the Student Government has worked very hard. making sure that the Student Body felt its presence. The officers were determined to make the Student Government a success. and with much work. they have succeeded. Due to the increased enrollment of the school. it was necessary to form two governing bodies. one for the Junior High School and one for the Senior High School. The two groups worked on individual problems. but combined their ideas on mutual plans and concerns. To give scholastic rating more importance, the school government backed the Honor Roll and the Student of the Month. It also improved student spirit by presenting the First Annual Talent Show. which is now to be a major event for the years to come. Dances were given more attention than ever before. especially with the Junior High in mind. The most successful of the large affairs were the Harvest Ball and the Spring Semi-Formal. To create an interest in other schools, our government began an exchange student program with various schools. In this program we received for one day a student from another school in exchange for one of our students. To learn about other schools' councils, our Student Government took an active part in various extra council meetings, such as the meet- ings of the New Castle County Stu- Q dent Government Association. Also. i three representatives were invited to attend the Delaware Safety Council at Dover. By attending such meet- ings, the representatives gain many worthy ideas which are put to use here at William Penn. Uffczaw President .........,.......,...... JAMES DODD Vice President .......... GLEN STOVER Vspddefdflp eq Each year students of high schools in the United States and its territories are eligible to enter the I Speak for Democracy contest, which is sponsored by the Junior Chamber of Commerce. The winner chosen from each school goes into further competition for the county finals. ami if successful, may proceed to the state and national titles. Each contestant must give a five-minute speech based on the freedoms granted to the people of a democ- racy. and on what democracy means to him. This year's winner for our school was David liankes. whose speech used the voting .curtain as a symbol of our democracy. The other finalists of the contest were: Judy Johnson, Dorothy Lawton, Eleanor McDowell, Carol lVloyle. Leonard Stewart. and Ben Vandegrift. 'Fil This year the Argus, under the direction of lVIr. John W. Dunlap, did not operate as one of the clubs, but as a journalism class which met five days a week and gave a full credit toward gradua- tion. Each member of the class had a certain assignment for each deadline. As a result of having class time devoted to it. the newspaper was published more efficiently than ever before. On Fri- day of every week each student received a copy of the publication. The members of the staff were: Sandy Van Hekle, Joyce Van Dyke, Trudy Valente, Joe Turner, Kathy Hendrickson, Mike Hoffmann, Betty Kelly, Susan Lloyd, Mary Maguire, Nick McGuire, Dorothy Poore, Dorothy Sutton, Ina Whaley, Ann Varisco, Marcia Arnold, Glenn Bailey, Pat Butler, Sally Burris, Judy Dagle, Nancy Fisher, Barbara Grimes. 7l 'YF W ,. ,A xwmG.1wg,4 V K5 I Q Q nf . 1 ik 4792. ,YE LZZJX: 5' -z- ap , f! :K mg!- ,, ,.S'.-, . . .gli ...I Q nf X my Gigi 1 sua U .xv ,.U f A .4Q.
