Dramatic Club The Penn Charter Dramatic Club produced a full billing of entertainment for the Penn Charter Stage 1959-60. Mr. Shakespeare, one of the two Dramatic Club faculty advisers, opened with Thornton Wilder's The Drunken Sisters and Ten- nessee Williams' The Case of the Crushed Pe- tunias, two highly entertaining shorts featur- ing Joe DeVita, Jock Deasey, and Jeff Tripp, the performers who stole the show. The Middle School, again with Mr. Shakespeare directing, pro- vided the cartoon - The Marriage Proposal, by Anton Chekhov-with Bill Buchanan in the spot- light. Using all the recently acquired modern light- ing equipment, Director Connick produced Penn Charter's first play in three-quarter round-the trial scene from lnherit the Wind. This documen- tary had excellent performances by Jock Deasey and Allan Schneider. February's Middle School plays, The Rivals by Sheridan, The Harmful- ness of Tobacco, a monologue by Chekhov, and The Fox, written and directed by Mr. McDowell finished warming the Penn Charter audience for the Dramatic Club Spectacular, Of Thee I Sing, by George Gershwin. With a cast of seventy this Cecil B. DeConnick directed musical was the cli- max of the Dramatic season. The secret ingredi- ents were: Mr. Connick and the organized Dra- matic Club Machine, Mr. Wells with his equally proficient chorus, The Springside School Dramatic Club and Chorus, and for flavoring, Richard Harry Rulon, Jock Deasey, Larry Cucinotta, and many more, all in riotous roles. The real backbone of all the productions, however, was the efficient stage and production crews who not only did a great iob, but saved money. This is Dramatics? Inherit the Wind. Ernest Wells has enjoyed the best season of its history. After singing a Mass with The Shipley School in No- vember, the Chorus gave an excellent Christmas Con- cert. In addition to the annual Spring Concert at Charter, trips to Chatham Hall, Virginia, and later in the year to Roland Park School in Baltimore were enioyed by the Chorus as well as by its feminine audiences. The sixteen member Quakers Dozen, consisting of the best members of the chorus, proved extremely versatile. Besides singing in the regular concerts given by the Chorus, the group took part in the Dramatic Club's production of Of Thee I Sing and John Brown's Body as well as singing at Mr. Wells' Church at Christmas and the Winter Cotillion. Practice over, and Coach Phil Maroney's line and Coach Tom Twitmeyer's backfield in top form, Penn Charter watched Valley Forge stumble into the P.C. arena to be torn apart. This was the first must game of the year, the Valley Forge blot on the record had to be avenged. Playing under lnterac rules, it was by a score of 36-8. Moving into the league season, we tangled with Haver- ford up there, and, suffering from game-after-must-game- letdown, we barely managed to beat them 14-0. Minus one of our quarterbacks and two linemen, we still went against Episcopal with confidence, perhaps too much. lt took that old guts ball and a complete team effort to pull it our way 28-l 6 and take the league lead. Success comes with ambition and PC football is afraid of no one. Taking lnterac prestige and our own future with us we went to Lincoln Prep, powerhouse of the Public Schools. This game has to rank among the best high school games of the decade. At least that was the opinion of those who watched and those who know football. Both teams fought to the death in a manner of true champions. It can be said for both schools this was their finest hour. The score, 28-26 Lincoln, is incidental, Philadelphia now knows that Penn Charter and the lnterac league can play real foot- ball. The price in football is often great, however, and minus the best halfback the league has had in many years, we went to wallow in the Malvern mud. Malvern, eventual Co-champs, were very strong, but a great team effort held off their re- peated drives to win 14-O. That left only G.A. between P.C. and an outright championship. Every team who is always on top has to finally lose, and G.A. killed us. Penn Charter, though badly crippled, played TOOWQ to the very end. Never will people be able to say that Penn Charter doesn't know how to lose. The record might have been better, but under the best coach in the Philadelphia area, Ray Dooney, the team learned the true value of competitive sport: The price of success is great and the road to it never smooth, in the end all that matters is how you played. Other line- men were All-Interac wing Alex Frazier, wing Dave Kevis, hustling inside Fred Schoen, inside Pete Sturrock, wing Rod Brown, and the previously mentioned Jack Levine, whose position was center for- ward. The backfield was anchored by All-Interac and Honorable Mention All-Scholastic Sam Francis. His chief aids were Jonathon Davis, George Hemphill, Randy Pyle, and Ernie Wright at the wing halfbacks, George McVaugh, Rich Schwarz, and Chet Perry at the fullbacks, and fine performer Jim Arrison in the goal. Sam Francis was voted the team's most valuable player, while Jon Davis and Alex Frazier received the MacCormick trophies as the most improved first and second year players. Needless to say, we are all deeply grateful to head coach Chick Conard, assistant coaches Mr. Connick and Mr. Kempner, and un- noticed by many, our conscientious team statistician, Mr. Linton, all of whom contributed greatly to the team's success with their excellent coaching and advice throughout the season. In the two Friends Central games, Merrill scored a total of 50 points, George 25, and Buck 20, while in the Haverford games the Big Three ac- counted for 80 points. In the second G.A. game we almost did it again, Merrill scored 23 points and Buck 15, but they managed to pull out a 61-58 victory. Our game with the Alumni was a 64- 50 triumph with ten players getting into the scoring column and the Big Three adding 41 points. At the end of the season Ambler-who was second in the league in scoring-was honored with a berth on the All-lnterac team, while Buckley made the second team, and Ingersoll received hon- orable mention. With nine members of the squad returning next season including four letter winners-Jimmy Ambler and Rich Redeker, as well as Geyer and Gates-we are looking forward to great things then. Brooks and Schnabel proved to be excellent captains. They turned in outstanding records, but more important than that, they offered the in- spiration and leadership necessary for any successful team. Frazier and Holmes, both experienced veterans, provided the team with many im- portant victories. McDowell was the biggest surprise of all. Out for wres- tling for the first time this year, he won his last eight matches in a row, including a 7-6 decision over the Delaware state champion. Swenson, one of P.C.'s greatest athletes in recent years, was a tower of strength through- out the season. At 165 pounds Prickett was the lightest heavyweight around, but he did a remarkable iob-especially in the Conestoga match where he outpointed his 265-pound opponent! These seven seniors will certainly be missed next year. Perhaps, with six of last year's nine lettermen returning, our chances this year are better than ever. Led by Captain Jack Levine, a tour-year varsity veteran with a com- posite 34-13 won-lost record, and iunior Pete Hunnbert, a veteran of two years varsity standing, the 1960 squad looms better than ever. Other players who will contribute greatly are senior Bob Ward and his freshman brother Frank, sophomore Pete Wills, who was last year's outstanding iunior player, senior Charlie Lom and iuniors Bill Biddle and Pug Winokur. Ot invaluable aid to the team are head coach Phil Maroney and assistant coach Bill Kenny, both of whom, through both their instruction and leadership, have piloted Penn Charter to thirty-one consecu- tive victories since the 1958 season. With their continuous aid and the rounding into shape of our top players, there is no reason why P.C. cannot complete its third championship season in a row.
