Comets Have A 5-5-0' Season Bumps and bruises, aches and pains, sweat and tears -- that's football. While others were still vacationing, forty-eight boys were being transformed into football players. This transformation began on July 16, with everyone reporting in trunks - time to get in shape. Then came pads, drills, practice --- practice, and Scrimmages. Football became a way of life. The season opened September 10 with Lockland. It was a time for no mistakes. Each player had to get an A in football, there was no room for B or C . The 1971 varsity football team ended the season with a 5-5 record in Coach Apke's second season as head coach with Mason. Victory-bound the mighty Comets gained 2, 031 yards rushing and 462 yards passing for a total of 2493 yards gained. Two boys deserving some recognition are Gary Miller and Jerry Spaeth. Miller gained 1353 yards during the season and Spaeth broke an all-time record with 82 unassisted tackles. m. ,3 MANAGERS: Jim Finke, Jim Forste, Mike Scott, and Don Thompson with CoachApke. y-s .k: STATISTICIAN: Tom Spaeth , Roger Bell, and Dan Pugh.
