Tomorrow Following the war years students flocked anew up the hill to William King. It was in this era after the end of the war that more changes took place on the hill to provide better and more adequate education for the boys and girls of Abingdon. In early spring of 1953 a new band building was completed and the band students felt themselves a very lucky group. Band Building Then in rapid succession the curriculum was broadened and students found that they had an opportunity to take homemaking and or work training programs in vocational education. In the fields of art and music there was added opportunity also. Art for both high school and elemen- tary group was available and in the high school chorus was placed on the curriculum and Glee Club was added as an extra-curricular activity. This past year a Future Teachers of America was organized for those who wish to enter the field of teaching. In 1954 in late fall the high school and elementary students were able to enjoy the cafeteria which is located in the north section of the new elementary building of twelve rooms for upper elementary grades. Elementary Building This is the story of the school on the hill , but the story is not ended . . . this is just the end of a chapter ... a new one wQl be written by the William King Elementary Students who will reign on the hill . . . looking forward to the time when they like their older brothers and sisters will enter high school . . . but it will not be William King High . . . This part of the story has had Finis written to it. 11

Toward a Richer In 1913 a new building was erected and given the name of William King by a group of citizens in the com- munity. It was built for a public high school and has served as such through this year when it will become an elementary center upon the open- ing of the new high school. In 1926-27 four rooms were annexed to the rear of the building to take care of the increased enrollment in pupils. New Addition The front of the school remained unchanged by the addition in the rear. Students came and went past the white pillars at the front door . . . through the depression years and right up to the Second World War. Many students from the community and the high school went off to war. To honor the memory of those who were Gold Star Students there is a plaque to the left of the front door of the high school.
