A TRIBUTE TO THE COMMUNITY In this year of 1959 when the town of Abingdon helps William King High School con- clude its last year as a secondary school after 156 years, we find it fitting to recount the story of education in picture and story. Since our community has always stood behind our school, and has believed in the best education for our youth, we welcome this opportunity to give credit for the effort that has been made through the years to provide the best education possible and to picture for the community what the school is doing to develop well-rounded citizens. In order to understand Abingdon’s enduring support of education we glance backward through the years to a small settlement called Black ' s Fort where the first school was established, 1784. Since the Academy was founded in 1803, the citizens of Abingdon have believed in the premise that a good design for education is one that fulfills the needs of a partic- ular community. Such was the spirit of Abingdon when William King High School was established on the site of the Academy in 1913. Today this thriving town, located on a main highway, offers excellent educational ad- vantages to all; and its progressive citizens are constantly interested in improving the community. True to the traditions of our forefathers, through a recent bond issue and an increased rate of taxation, the citizens of Abingdon and Abingdon District voted to expand school facilities to fill the changing needs of the youth of the town and district. By fall of 1959, a new high school, offering the best education possible for tomorrow ' s citizens, will be ready for occupancy. With sincere appreciation we say thank you to our community and the people whose beliefs and efforts will serve those yet to come. 4 Cave House Vance ' s Tavern Formerly home of General Francis Preston, Martha Washington College for girls for nearly 75 years, now Martha Washington Inn. Abingdon Town Hall and Home of Barter Theatre 5 Milestones William King was born in Ireland and came to America at the age of fifteen. He re- ceived a legacy of 100 pounds from his grandmother and with this set out to make his fortune as a pedlar. His success was rapid and he established stores along his route of travel and was certain to stock them well with the goods which the people of his day would purchase. He built the first brick house in Abingdon which is still standing on Court Street. In his will he left $10,000 either in money or land to establish a school for boys. The one other man besides William King who made his mark in education in Abingdon was William Webb. Described as a very small man, with a face round as a moon and eyes of jet black, talkative, lively and intelligent and bold as the king of the beasts when aroused . . . this was the first school master of Abingdon. His school was built at the head of Black’s mill pond, south of the present Nor- folk and Western Railway; the ground was the floor and the boys sat on hewn slabs placed on forks in the ground and their writing desk was made in the same manner. In 1786 or 1789 another school was built in the location of the present Sinking Spring Cemetary and here school was conducted until the organization of Abingdon Male Academy. Abingdon Academy was opened in the Masonic Hall which is at the site of the Washington County jail in 1803 and continued there until 1820. William King ' s will was probated December 20, 1808 and it was found that he had made a provision for the Academy. He had been very interested in the Academy and since he had received a good English Education prior to his coming to this country, he realized the importance of education and by his provision to the Academy he rendered a service to the many generations of students who trudged up William King hill during the years of their education. 6 Along the • • • In the fall of the year 1812, the following ad appeared in the ’’Political Prospect, the Abingdon newspaper of that time. ABINGDON ACADEMY The trustees of this institution have the happiness to announce to the friends of Erudition, that the muses are about to pour out their treasures from the Pierian Spring in this Seminary. To the American Youth who thirst for literary requirements, they offer draughts of; LANGUAGE AND SCIENCE Under The REV. THOMAS ERSKINE BIRCH, WHOSE TALENTS as a preceptor have been so universally authenticated that any encomium is unnecessary. In 1824 a contract was let to build a brick academy, to cost $2,000; it was completed in 1827 and was reported to be one of the best school buildings in Western Virginia at the time. The first principal of the Academy in its new location was William Ewing and during his administration the attendance was considerable and the Academy prosperous. 7 Pathway of In 1833 it was decided to unite the male and female schools of the town but co-educational was too advanced an idea for the early nineteenth century and the idea failed. The next interesting bit of information which is found about the male academy is about the time of the California Gold Rush at which time the school was conducted as a military institution. The boys wore uni forms and engaged in daily drills. Their uniform consisted of gray cloth coatees with pantaloons of the same material in winter and in summer they wore white linen or cotton and a cap of blue cloth. It is of interesting note that John G. Winniford who for a number of years conducted the Academy was the son of the main contractor of Emory and Henry College and probably the first graduate of that in- stitution. During the Civil War soldiers from Scott County were quartered in the school building and it also served as a hospital for the wounded. By 1872 the academy building, due to neglect and bad usage, had become very dilapidated and new buildings were begun in that year. The corner stone of the Academy was relaid jointly by the Waterman Lodge No. 219 and Abingdon Lodge No. 48, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons. Among those names on the program for July 15, 1872 are many whose grandchildren are today enrolled in William King High School. Marker to the memory of two outstanding teachers at the Academy. 8 Progress • • • The Academy is described as being located on a high hill in the midst of a splendid grove of poplar, oak and chestnut trees and from this hill one may have a wonderful view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. White Top Mountain and the town of Abingdon. There are about eighteen acres of land surrounding the school and it is about one quarter of a mile from town. The brick home near the Academy which was built at the same time the new building was erected in 1872 still stands and at the time of this writing is used by the custodian of the h igh school and the second floor contains a shop for the woodworking classes of the high school. The Male Academy continued until 1904 and at its close, an ending was written to one chapter of education in Abingdon; with a new chapter to start in 1913. Toward a Richer In 1913 a new building was erected and given the name of William King by a group of citizens in the com- munity. It was built for a public high school and has served as such through this year when it will become an elementary center upon the open- ing of the new high school. In 1926-27 four rooms were annexed to the rear of the building to take care of the increased enrollment in pupils. New Addition The front of the school remained unchanged by the addition in the rear. Students came and went past the white pillars at the front door . . . through the depression years and right up to the Second World War. Many students from the community and the high school went off to war. To honor the memory of those who were Gold Star Students there is a plaque to the left of the front door of the high school. ' i ou fl ' “TM3IR. VICTOR ' I 10 Tomorrow Following the war years students flocked anew up the hill to William King. It was in this era after the end of the war that more changes took place on the hill to provide better and more adequate education for the boys and girls of Abingdon. In early spring of 1953 a new band building was completed and the band students felt themselves a very lucky group. Band Building Then in rapid succession the curriculum was broadened and students found that they had an opportunity to take homemaking and or work training programs in vocational education. In the fields of art and music there was added opportunity also. Art for both high school and elemen- tary group was available and in the high school chorus was placed on the curriculum and Glee Club was added as an extra-curricular activity. This past year a Future Teachers of America was organized for those who wish to enter the field of teaching. In 1954 in late fall the high school and elementary students were able to enjoy the cafeteria which is located in the north section of the new elementary building of twelve rooms for upper elementary grades. Elementary Building This is the story of the school on the hill , but the story is not ended . . . this is just the end of a chapter ... a new one wQl be written by the William King Elementary Students who will reign on the hill . . . looking forward to the time when they like their older brothers and sisters will enter high school . . . but it will not be William King High . . . This part of the story has had Finis written to it. 11 BUILDERS SUPER MARKET OF ABINGDON, INC. OHE MILE H OUTHOfAtlUmH. Building Needs From A - Z MORRELL’S SHOE SHOP 317 W.
