Instead, He left it as a raw material --to tease us, to tantalize us, to set us thinking and experimenting and risking and adventuring! And therein we find our supreme interest in living. So says Dr. Allen A. Stockdale. God left the electricity in the clouds. He left the rivers un-bridged -- and the mountains un-trailed. He left the forests un-felled and the cities un-built. He left the laboratories un-opened. He left the diamonds un-cut. He gave us the challenge of raw materials, not the satisfaction of perfect, finished things. He left the music un-sung and the dramas un-played. He left the poetry un-dreamed, in order that men and women might not be¬ come bored, but engage in stimulating, exciting, creative activities that keep them thinking, working, experimenting, and experiencing all the joys and durable satisfactions of achievement. So it is with all the world. There is no Shangri-La where our every want can be supplied by wishing. There is no substance to the philosophy of getting by. There is nothing worth while gained by chance. Thought, work, creation. These give life its stimulus, its real satisfaction, its intriguing value. What challenges are left today? Lands have been explored, great cities have been built, beautiful music has been composed. Immortal dramas have been written. And yet there is so much still to be done. Yes, I believe that today youth faces a greater challenge than at any time in the past. We have in our hands power of terrifying proportion. We shall determine whether atomic power shall usher in the greatest period of peace and prosperity the world has known or whether this power shall be used for utter destruction of civilization. Peace can be preserved and devastation can be avoided only if we become world mind¬ ed and realize that our fate is closely allied to the fate of all men every where. Then we must meet the challenge of preserving democracy. Our govern¬ ment is constantly threatened by countless isms which come disguised and traveling under such names as freedom and security. Unless we are vigilant, we can lose our way of life in which the individual really counts. If only fifty per cent of those who could vote take the time and trouble to go to the polls, how can we expect to preserve a government based on the rights of the individ= ual ? We take for granted that political independence and the right to vote are permanent and essentially right. We may take it too much for granted and we may be more concerned with the right to govern ourselves than we are with governing ourselves well. The chance to rise from the depths to the heights has existed in America to a degree not known at any tirpe, anywhere else in the world. Let us work together in governing ourselves and preserving our great heritage of freedom and democracy! Then youth must face the challenge of destroying prejudice and really living as though every man is our brother. We must learn to put aside our personal prejudices and to work together for the good of all. Thus may each race have 72 its individual life and all races live in peace and harmony together. We must all strive to know better all the peoples of the world and to help each and all in the struggle upward, envying no man his success; hating none, blessing and blessed by all. The challenges whichyouth mustface today are legion. There are people in America, to say nothing of the thousands in other countries who are suffering or dying for lack of medical care. We need more doctors and more nurses to meet this need. There are children in America who are being poorly trained in overcrowd¬ ed classrooms by overworked teachers. We need more teachers and better trained teachers and they must come from the youth of today. There are far too many broken homes, there are far too many juvenile delinquents and too many adult delinquents. There are far too many vacant seats in our churches. Where are those people who belong in those seats? They are in that great harvest that is ready for harvesting. We need better institutions for the insane, better prisons, greater security for old people. There is so much yet to be done in science. True, we have made wonderful progress in medicine, but as yet we have no cure for cancer, for heart disease , for palsy, for dozens of others. And yet the answer is right out there. It is in that material God left. All the answers can be found by prayer to God, thinking, experimenting, risking, adventuring. And we , the young, the strong, the graduates of 1955 can meet this challenge . 73 D€u THeet 75 Revenge At Last Those Night Trips The Lightin' Special The Hotel Off at last. Finally caught.
