The answer is that they, along with her teaching, are the greatest loves of Dr, Ann Marie Shan- non. The artist is Patric Shannon, her artist husband. Molly and Minna von Barnhelm, affectionately lsnown as the girls, are their dachshunds named for 'la very sweet hero- ine in German literature. The Shannons and their l'girls live in a Victorian house at the bottom of llthe l-lill , The house, a historical landmarle, was built in 1884 by a physician who had many associations with William Jewell. Besides her husband dogs and the house, the majority of her time is spent in teaching. This love for teaching led to her receiving the 1980 Excellence in Teaching Award of the Kansas City Regional Council for l-ligher Education Cl4CPlCl-IED in May. Recommendations for the award came from facul- ry peers students and graduates. A panel of faculty mem- bers of KCRCHE colleges and universities then judged her teaching to be outstanding and presented their Excellence in Teaching Award to her. Dr. Shannon remarked that she was overwhelmed by her award and added that it was especially meaningful because teaching is one of the most important interesting and rewarding worlss anyone can do. Recognition for Dr. Shannon came in the areas of class- room teaching development of effective teaching methods and innovative curricula and courses and contributions to the general college welfare. Although teaching must come easy she still sets goals for the classroom. She wants her students to learn an important intellectual sleills to use and enjoy the rest of their lives- to learn the excitement to be found in literature. She thinlss the best way to teach that is by having them read together and then tails about it in class. She sets her own goals in teaching as sharing both my slsills and my delight with the subject. lfl don't honestly enjoy literature, how can l expect my students to enjoy it. if 3?
