When we think of William Jewell College, we think of people. Some are attractive beyond the ordinary, some are exceptionally athletic, some are brilliant, some are capable of generating warmth and enthusiasm. Each is vital to a student body. Where there are people there are emotions, varying in kind, as the people themselves. A wisp of melody, a glimpse of held hands, distant laughter, a yearning for something without form or name-all these bring sudden loneliness, not explainable, not lasting. A moment later our perspective glows with the optimism of youth, the awareness of limitless horizons, the impulsive surge of motivation. Interspersed among our moods and routines are occasions like academic processions, formal convocations, unforgettable classroom lectures.'The observant interpret these sig- nificant times as pageantry or novelty, the perceptive, as encounter with dignity and true greatness. The vividness of these memories, the sharpness of the impression will remain in our minds.

The Jewell campus is no different from any other college in the world in a few respects. The first few days of registration and orientation are rigid tests of patience and stamina. Standing in line accounts for a large portion of a day's time, whether it be a line for car registration, paying fees, purchasing books, planning courses, or eating lunch. The first few days left us feeling like one in a crowd, an insignificant hunk of humanity, a patch of fog in the haziness of it all. Fortunately it didn't take long for the friendly atmosphere to lift the fog and transform the crowd into distinct personalities.
