WALTER POPE BINNS Introducing Dr. Walter Pope Binns . . . During the Hrst week when the new students gather in Gano Chapel, they are-homesick, dubious, and bewildered. But then Dr. Binns takes over and helps to relieve that Qrientation Week tension. Later as the student advances in his education, Dr. Binns tackles the job of assuring the student of a well-rounded education. Although his duties often call him away from the I-Iillf, we have all become familiar with Dr. Binns, hobbies, taste in I2 literature, and deep religious convictions through his chapel talks. Dr. Walter Pope Binns received his Bachelor of Arts degree at Mercer University. Later he completed work on his Master of Theology at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Mercer has honored Dr. Binns with D.D. and LL.D. degrees. VVilliam lewell certainly has a president who thinks as straight and tall as he stands. ln1 I ized assu ben' leg sin rec lat- Ba KC A fr cl -9---..,.---.-....i. Introducing H. I. Hester and Minetry L. Jones If the students of William Iewell College real- ized the responsibility that our vice-presidents assume to facilitate all resources for the students benefit, a great deal of thanks would be in order. The Vice-President of William Iewell Col- lege, Dr. H. l. Hester, is well known for his sincerity and geniality. This industrious man received his B.A. degree at Wake Forest. He later received his Th.M. and Th.D. at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. H. I. HESTER Vice-Pres1'dent of the College Minetry L. Iones returned to his Alma Mater to become Vice-President in charge of Business Administration. His duties often take him away from the HillH for his responsibilities include close contact with Alumni. MINETRY L. Ioivns Vice-President of Business Admz'niszratz'0n Much Work is required to fulfill the obligations that these men have-to the school, as well as the students. This time they devote in a Christian and unassuming manner, that one seldom realizes the vast machinery needed to have a Well-run college. I3 . -,-- -f.-le ,qi-1,- 7H'22r..n, . Every student at William Iewell comes in contact with Miss Catherine Bates, the Dean of Women, fulfills her job in a charming, capable and efhcient manner. She helps plan many campus affairs and sets up the school calendar for all the social functions which will take place during the year. As Dean of the Women, Miss Bates finds herself in close contact with all the problems and triumphs of the women students on the campus. Hers is a vitally interesting job which she performs well. Miss CATHERINE BATEs E. W. Holzapfel either directly or indirectly. As head of the admissions department and Dean of Students, he is a constant and ready help for anyone considering entering Iewell or Wanting work or financial or vocational advice. He directs enrollment, testing, and records. Students readily come to like Mr. Holzapfel because of his warmth and interest. Then throughout their college stay he remains both a counselor and friend. E. W. HOLZAPFEL RICHARD PowERs The position of the Dean of the College is an important one, which is filled capably by Richard Powers. From his ollice comes news of the Honor Roll, changes in the cur- riculum, and news of registration. This is the first year that Dean Powers has been on the Iewell campus, however, he has done a superb job in planning the curriculum and even with ugivingi' out with a bit of advice. Under the able direction of Mr. Lakin, it has taken an active role in the school year. The Band boasts of full instrumentation and complete uniforms. This includes sweaters which will become the property of the band members after three complete semesters of participation and compliance with other rules. The group has shown versatility in all its performances. Faithful and loyal, this group led the school spirit at all the home football games and marched in both the college's and Liberty High 50 Schoolls Homecoming parades. Branching out from the college, the band went on tours of several neighboring high schools. During the year it put on several Chapel programs for the entire student body. During the football season two of the pro- grams were pep rallies. At one of these, the band introduced and taught the students a new pep song. Another of the Chapel programs consisted of music composed by comtemporary Missouri musicians. The other was music from American musical comedy and light opera. Of course, the band participated in the annual Music Festival. In cooperation with the Dramatics Department, the Music Department presents the annual Christmas Story, which is a highpoint of the holiday season. ln the spring, a Brahms Re- quiem was given for the Easter Vespers. Its success was due to the capable organization of the co-chairmen, Cynthia Hirni and Edward Damer. The Pep Rally Thursday night started the gala mood which was initiated by the cheerleaders. Friday night the students enjoyed the Variety Talent Show, which had its usual combination of high humor, singing, exaggerated drama, and royal beauty. From the fifteen candidates selected by the students in the preliminary ballot in Chapel, the queen, two princesses, and two attendants were chosen. Then, after a sleepless night of stuffing napkins and shaping chicken wire, the parade takes place. At this time the winners of the Hoat and house decorations are announced. Saturday after- noon is the biggest event of the big weekend, the Homecoming Game. This year the Cardinals played the Baker Wildcats. We wonl Of course, no Homecoming would be complete without a Homecoming Dance, which was held in the Memorial Hall. The 1957 Homecoming was a tremendous success from the floats and parades to house decora- tions, variety show, queen coronation, and of course the alumni reunions and coffee chats which were held in the College Union. The traditional cry- santhemum-pennants victory made the '57 Home- coming tops in the book of William Iewell activities. 54 Z2 5 7 .fl ' 4 ,Q .M H ui .. 4-'f Miss Alumna, Louise Boleg Mr. Alumnus, Loren Goings. Aeons The honor society for senior men on the Wil- liam Iewell campus, under the title of Aeons, was founded in 1905. In its more than half a century of existence, the organization has avoided attempts to attract attention, instead it works quietly but effectively to promote the best interests of William Iewell College. The sociey is selt-perpetuating. Its members are chosen each year from the outstanding men of the junior class on the basis of leadership, scholarship, and service. The group is a secret society, and except for the black and white arm-bands which are 72 worn at the time new members are elected and their small crossed keys badge, there are few outward manifestations of their honor. The Aeons strive to bring about a higher level of thought and action on the campus through the exemplary con- duct of the individual members. Faculty members who are Aeons are Tom Bray and Professor Harvey. Dr. Binns is an honorary member. Seniors who were honored this year are: Iohn Root, Ierry Eaton, Wes Hedges, Robert Hawkins, and lack Gabriel. It all began this fall when we returned to a new sorority dormitory-our pride and joy-our blue and white chapter room, decorated in the Georgian tradition. During rush week, we boasted the largest number of pledges on campus- twenty-one girls who lost no time in becoming campus leaders. In beauty, the Alpha Delts boast of a Royal family composed of: Homecoming Queen, Second Princess, Second Attendant, Football Queen, and Tatler Queen. Qur skit, Little Red Riding Hoodu in the era of the Twenties, won us second place 74 in Tatler Revue. ln the Homecoming honors, our float, Willy the Wormf' with twenty pair of green Gamma Nu legs, wiggled off with third place honors. Qn the Hill, the Alpha Delta Pi's are active in all phases of student activities. We may boast of three class officers, leads in the Shakespearean and fall plays, three maiorettes, four cheerleaders, and members in Panaegis, and lVlzo'x lflflzo in American Colleges and U71liUCI'Jlifl.C'5. These were the aims we sought to achieve under our new constitution. Among the highlights of the year are: we began with a skating party at the roller rink in Buckner, Missouri, at Christmas time we presented a Christ- mas pageant at the Veterans Hospital in Excelsior Springs and sang carols for those unable to attend the pageant. 80 An important event in the life of the organiza- tion was the changing of our name from Independ- ent Society to lndependent Students' Association. This change was announced at the time of our new members received their certificates of first class membership. This is our Fifth year to be affiliated with the National lndependent Students' Associa- tion. At the close of the year a formal banquet was held where our new ohcicers for next year were installed. This event will long be remembered by all who attended. RN sw die iw: Z3- ind- on. ,ew lass ted cia- N35 'CFC by Top: Iini Henry, Ierry Skaggs. Alpha Delta Chapter of Kappa Ipha Order Since December 19, 1865, the date of its found- ing at Washington and Lee University, the Kappa Alpha Order has wrapped its fraternal organization in Southern tradition. lts aspiration has been to instill in its members the qualities of the true Southern Gentleman as shown by the spiritual founder of Kappa Alpha, Robert E. Lee. Rush Week closed successfully for Kappa Alpha with the acquisition of a fine pledge class of twenty- eight. Following in the success of Rush Week was Homecoming with Kappa Alpha taking first place honors in both Float and House divisions. 82 ln February came the annual Convivium cele- bration which, brought together pledges and actives along with alumni of Alpha Delta and members of the Kansas City Alumni Association. The Old South Ball once again was one of the social season's most outstanding affairs. This year, as in the past, Kappa Alpha has had many of. its members active in campus affairs. With its men taking an active part in student government, honorary and service organizations, music, and special honor groups, Kappa Alpha has continued to maintain its reputation for quality leadership. lrc, le- fes irs Fld 7 I S ad .rh nr, nd ed Top: lack Root, Mari- on Rowin, Charles Blay- lock, Ken Euritt. Epsilon u Chapter of Lambda Chi Ipha The Epsilon Nu Chapter of Lambda Chi Alpha, the largest national fraternity, is Iewell's youngest and, we believe, most progressive fraternity. The men of Lambda Chi Alpha were very active in all campus extra-curricular activities. Campus leaders included the Student Body Presi- dent, Senior Class President, Iunior Class President, and presidents of several honorary organizations. Members were in Aeons and TfV1z0'5 lflfho. Other activities by members included partici- pation in varsity and intramural sports. Two members were Co-Captains of the Cross Country Team. We placed first in scholarship in 1957 84 among the campus fraternities. At Homecoming we received second place trophies for both house and float decorations. Highlighting social activities were the ulfiisher- man's Wharrl, Fall Formal and the annual gLWhite Rose Crescent Ballw in the spring. lnterspersed with these were open house, informals and a very successful pledge dance. A great deal of our success this year was due to the efforts of our house mother, Mrs. Charles Graham, and our alumni adviser, Mr. Curtis Graham. These two persons hold a high place in the hearts of all Lambda Chi's. Top: lorry Curnutt, Ioe Handy, Rich Schwartz. Organized as a local fraternity in 1871 bearing the name of Zeta Phi, Phi Gamma Delta has the distinction of being the oldest fra- ternity on the hill. Pledging eleven new men in the fall, the Fiji's enlarged that number to sixteen as the year pro- gressed. The freshmen kicked off the Phi Gam social season with their annual pledge dance, which had the exotic theme of Arabian Nightsf, A hay- ride followed soon and then came the fall formal 86 with its ghosts, goblins, and Halloween decor. In the spring came 'iFiji Weekend,,, which included a Fiji Island Party in costume and later a picnic. There were numerous informal date parties, picnics, and each sorority was entertained one night during the year. For the second straight year, the Phi Gams brought the first place trophy in Tatler Revue to the Fiji Hutf, The prize winning skit was an original take-off on Roman mythology set to the tempo of Pajama Gamef' With its members in nearly all campus activities, Phi Gamma Delta is proud of its accomplishments. Beta Xi Chapter of Sigma u The Beta Xi chapter of Sigma Nu rolled on to another line year in 1957-1958. Our successful rush week brought us twenty-four new pledges and a returning active, Ron Merrill. On the Hill Pat Cartwright was in the running for the Ugly Man contest. lt was no surprise to have the Sigma Nuls leading the way in every sport. The Sigma Nu's had a captain in every sport. Our pledge class came up with our hrst social activity in the form of a hayride. This year w-e initiated what may become a tradition for Beta Xi. Peggy Wilson was chosen as Playmate of the year and was rewarded the Playmate trophy. Oli course, the VVhite Rosel' was an elegant and successful as 88 usual, and we're sure everyone will remember it for the years to come. The Missouri Sigma Nu Chapters held their annual basketball tournament at William lewell this year. Six teams competed from Missouri Valley, Washington University, Rolla School of Mines, Drury, and William lewell. Our house was redecoratedthis year and we all approve of the change. However, we still retain the distinction of having the oldest fraternity house west of the Mississippi. Again this year we are all grateful to our Sigma Nu girl, Mother Huff. Ministerial Association Nineteen Fifty-seven began one of the more active years for the H. I. Hester Ministerial Asso- ciation. The meetings were planned well ahead of their dates making it possible to have speakers of high quality to H11 the engagements at 3 p.m. each Wednesday. Meeting in the new college union building added much to the comfort and atmos- phere of the meetings over the former meetings held in Iewell Hall. Needs were being met as they occurred. One of the important needs was to acquire hymn books. The Rev. Clayburn Landers of Kansas City became aware of this need and presented the association with twenty-four monogramed Baptist Hymmzls in Cardinal-red bindings. ,.- .-.-.., .....n. - ...4..:-....,-.-....-.... ..... ,.......,....,--M With the coming of the Rev. Tom Bray to give direction to the religious activities on the campus, the association was greatly benefited. One of the changes introduced by Mr. Bray was a system of keeping a monthly report on the activity of each student minister. The ministers were required to attend the meetings to become acquainted with each other and the general program of the associa- tion. Dr. Earl Harding, executive secretary of the Missouri Baptist Convention, was the guest speaker at the annual banquet, April 28. This was a fitting climax for the year, socially. The Drama organization was founded by Dr. Fruit in 1924 and now is directed by Miss Virginia D. Rice. Each year they produce two major plays, one of which is a Shakespearean drama. The Players started the dramatic season with the presentation of Mrs, McThing. Naomi Graves, Iohn Carliyle, Kathy Patterson, and Chris Ward starred in the presentation. The height of the season was reached when the Shakespearean play, The Merchant of Venice, was presented. The leads in the play were held by Iudy Craig, Don Harris, Nancy Moore, Maurice Montgomery, Marguerite Smith, Frank Adams, Bob Tinsley, and Richard Owen. The response from the faculty, student body, and towns- people has been very encouraging. It is impossible to mention all the members of the Players, for many have cooperated to make the presentations a success. Under the leadership of Shirley Kohler, President, Naomi Graves, Vice- President, Alice Rowland, Secretary-Treasurer, and Martha LaFrenZ, publicity Chairman, the Players have had a banner year. William Iewell is fortunate to have a great many students unusually talented in dramatics willing to work hard and strive toward perfection in the art, thereby making the result satisfying to both the director and to the students participating as well. 99 Political Science Club f-. -99 V 'ZW ,WW few mmm Wm 77, , 7:T17fI'2Zf':7 ms Www Wa W-z wwwawvzrfz zfwvfwzawswt anne ram: mn mwah W ima num an wma mmm an nam ni nw 'WW Z 457 if ' iff f A ' iffy?
