He was born among the sunlit hills of old Virginia, in the days when those giant men were born whose spirits clashed in the nerceness of the Civil War. However, under the fostering care of that strong man of God, William F. Broaddus, his school-boy days passed quietly enough and he went on up to the classic walls of the University of Virginia. Here in l86I he heard the call of hfe and drum and marched away, a lad of nineteen, under the Confederate Hag, which he followed for four years through cold and hunger, glory and defeat until the end at Appomatox Court House. After the war, this veteran soldier at the age of twenty-three, turned again to his books and taught school until l86S, when he was called to the professorship of ancient languages in William Jewell College. l-lere for forty years, following in the footsteps of the Great Teacher he went in and out before the students of this college, with the calm philosophy of a Socrates, the stern virtue of an old Roman and the gentle heart of a little childf, During these four decades he stood in his place, did his duty day in and day out, raised a family of hve sons and one daughter in honor and the fear of God, and came to his bed in peace, wishing only, since his work was hnished and he must go, to go quickly. Since his death, tributes of loving appreciation have come from his students scattered in all parts of the earth, and though he has gone from us in the lives of these men his spirit still lives and works. 6

' 1 We THE TATLER '09 f To the Great Qnes. Oh Men evolved through years of painful climbing: Oh, deilvers deep in Wisdom's deepest minesg To Thee, the worthy Sons of ancient Sages- Thou none less worthy-we have penned these lines. In sunny France when Modern age was infant, A King with heart of l-lope didst found a Schoolg From far off Bagdad and from old Cordova, Crusaders brought the Power of Wisdom's Rule. Deep in those ponderous books didst delve the sages, Deep into listening ears didst secrets pour,- At Oxford, Paris and Berlin the An'cient, Didst Learning knock and hnd an open door. And so to they who builded for the Ages, To they of future greatness greater still, To thee, whose knowledge found such sure foundation- We pen these wavering lines with trenchant quill. 8
