YOUNG .4 ;;7?? 1'?? ??OOM SUSAN TURNER Section Editor u i ' w 30 MR. ALBERT LONGBRAKE, Assistant Principal, addresses the freshmen Dn Orientation Day, welcoming the Class of 1969 to Harrison. THE BOOKSTORE stocked extra everythings and braced for the all-day sales of opening week. AFTER EARLY FEBRUARY rains we put one bucket in the hall. In late February we added a second bucket. By mid-March they had become a SS-gallon drum. From its infancy four short years ago, Harrison has de- veloped into a mature and respected adult. Much in that first year was sparse, with 1245 students en- rolled in September 1962. There were 36 homerooms and 51 faculty members to guide us over the rough spots. The freshmen of that year have seen Harrison grow. Now over 2000 pupils are divided among 61 homerooms and at- tend classes conducted by 80 teachers. classes conducted by 80 teachers. Although we have nearly doubled our size since the first days, the spirit and unity of the beginning have not been forgotten. The newness and togetherness fostered then have become a tradition. Years will pass, and people will come and go, but the precedents built on the blueprint of the first four years will be long remembered. F reshmen, Returning Students Crowd in As Harrison Expands TO ESCAPE THE cafeteria confusion and to study in rela- tive quiet, students filled the library during lunch periods. The plans of this yearls senior class were not only numer- ous, but successful. They excelled in all their projects, activi- tiesein fact everything they did. Jim Campbell led the Class of 1966 with the aid of Bob Zimmerman, vice presi- dent; Cathy Tiernan, treasurer; and Terry Rosenblatt, secretary. Although the senior class is traditionally the Hbest one everfl the other three classes are not to be forgotten. The juniors, led by Terry Wedgewood, president; Mike Shoul- ders, vice president; Dian Corn, secretary; and Ellen Hen- dershot, treasurer, started the school spirit drive rolling and kept it going all the way. It wasnlt long before they had the whole school on board the llspirit band wagon. The sophomore class set precedent this year when they held an all-school sock hop, llWipeout, insteatl of the tra- ditional sophomore class party. Mike Brooks, president; Jon Kixmiller, vice-president; Julie Sauef, secretary; and Sally Senzell, treasurer, realized the planning and responsibility it took to make the sock hop the success it was . In keeping with the current llJames Bond rage, the freshmen planned their class party on the llThunder Balll' theme. David Biber presided over the freshmen, with Gayle Prusz, vice president; Cathy Hudson, secretary; and Ann Shopmeyer, treasurer, helping him. Yes, we can say that each class was well represented. The officers have proven themselves to be capable and respon- sible leaders. They have led their respective classes through many projects and activities which always came out on top. Club Projects Pep, School S pirit Soars Two bits, four bits . . fl These are the words that we yelled for the megaphone contest at pep assemblies. Compe- tition was keen this year, especially between the jumors and seniors. The megaphone changed hands many times as each class tried to outayell the others. Each class put on at least one assembly and the teachers pitched in when they gave the Sectional pep rally. Little Red was elected by the student body last spring and given war dance lessons. He presented victory feathers for every win and did special Indian dances at each pep as- sembly. Little Red also appeared before and at half-time of each football and basketball: game. The Pep Club organized many of the skits for our pep assemblies. With over 100 seniors at the Tuesday afternoon meetings, the interest was great and the participation was overwhelming. Remember the Indian feathers and headbands, the huge Hll formed for the Sectionals, and the signs that were seen so frequently around the school and at pep assemblies? All of these are proof that this year we had spiritll 'Sabrina F air9 Leads Winter Production Summary of liSabrina Fairll When Sabrina Fairchild, the daughter of Larrabeels chauf- feur, returned from her schooling in France, the entire Lar- rabee household became interested in her. David Larrabee was fascinated by Sabrina; his older brother Linus was also interested, but silently. David soon fell in love with Sabrina, and was thinking of marriage, but Sabrina did not love him, and Maude Lar- rabee would hardly consent to a marriage that was below her sonls station. When Sabrinals French boyfriend visited from Europe, things really got confusing. It was at this time that Sabrina and Linus realized that they were in love. Then, to simplify matters, Sabrinals father, Fair'child, revealed that he had made a fortune in stocks, and Sabrina was wealthier than the Larrabees. The result was a wedding for Sabrina and Linus. , ,' ii: ROBIN GRIEP, CATHY Tiernan, and Judy Shepherd are among the stars of the fall play, Sabrina Fair. As the clock neared midnight, the couples slowly left with only memories and pictures of the big occasion. Laying the F oundation JANET ELLIS Section Editor Students Gain Spirit From Dedicated Faculty The 1965-66 school year saw many new additions and changes to the Harrison faculty and staff. Foremost among these was the addition of our new principal, Mr. William T. Pritchett, who so successfully took the reins to lead us through another year of growth and achievement. Also new were Mrs. Genc Anderson, freshman counselor who came to us from Bosse, and IVIrs. Barbara Barnes, coun- selorsT secretary. Mrs. Barnes stepped in as the counselorsT secretary when Mrs. Lou Wright took over in the assistant principalTs office for Miss Marilyn Wilson, who left early last fall. The new members of the faculty learned quickly of the overall sense of participation in school functxons and soon joined the ranks of those already experienced in the Warrior spirit. Sixteen members of Harrisonys orchestra and fourteen members of Harrisonis band represented the school in Evans- villeis All-City Orchestra and Band. Under Mr. Donaldsonis leadership, the Harrison concert and marching band enter- tained at half-times of football games and pep assemblies with the pep band playing at basketball games. Accompany- ing the HSound of Musid, proved an interesting interlude from concerts for the concert orchestra. David Locker, senior, and Judy Rice, junior, were selected soloists for the Evansville Philharmonic Youth Concerts. Chosen to tour Europe this summer with the School Orches- tra of America was violinist Jeri Ryan, junior. Mr. Brad Chaffin directed the choirs at Harrison, includ- ing a new hand-bell choir. The concert choir gave tradi- tional Thanksgiving and Christmas programs and traveled to the feeder grade schools, hoping to show talented young- sters the possibilities Harrison has to offer. The concert Choir and tTAccentsi, each performed special programs during the year. The concert choir sang a complete Mass in Latin while the iiAccentsii performed itA Christmas Carol? Nine students of the Art Department, under Mr. Noble Hart, received ribbons or honorable mention in the Vander- burgh County High School Art Show. Mr. Mike Dubber introduced arts and crafts to Harrison,s curriculum as wit- nessed by the multi-colored rugs and plaster busts seen around school. And, as always, Mr. Hart was there to lend a helping hand and a world of knowledge to aid in decorating for proms and class parties. Under Miss Edna Vinson, department head, the switch from old to new was made as easily as possible, leaving only the students completely confused. There was much renovation in the Science department, too, in the form of a radiology room. The new room was created for teachers and students who need to use radioactive ma- terials in the course of experiments. A long hoped for addi- tion, the room was built during the first semester. The Social Studies Department was active during both Youth Appreciation Week, when certain Harrison seniors took official city jobs for a day, and also during the Mock Trial when a legal battle took place that is destined to be put in the annals of law history. Besides required fundamentals of English, such electives as English Literature, American Literature, journalism, Word Power, and Advanced Composition II are offered. The Language Department is fortunate in having a mod- ern language lab, under the direction of Mr. Marvin Moody, which is used in studying Spanish, French, German, or Latin. A new class in Greek was started on an experimental basis after school with Miss Vivian Morlock teaching. This year six Harrison seniors spent time in foreign coun- tries learning their language. Don Elliott and Allan Downen went to Germany under an Indiana University language study program. Providing the Home Economics teachers with plenty of headaches and the neighboring classes with a blend of surprising aromas, was a special fifth period foods class for senior boys. Senior Susan Edmondson was the years outstanding homemaker from Harrison to be awarded the Betty CroCker Homemaking Award. The Industrial Arts department, consisting of graphic arts, metal shop, wood shop, electricity, and drawing classes, trains boys to work expertly with their hands. Secretary training, bookkeeping and accounting, Dis- tributive Education, and office practice are the four main fields of business education offered by the department. Those students not planning to attend college are prepared for and helped in job placement. Personal use skills are offered mainly for college buund students but are open to any stu- dent. Offered to all students is a background course of busi- ness law and business principles. Headed by Mr. Warren Wilhelm, this year Harrison's Distributive Education Club won much fame in the regional and state meets. In the regional D.E. meet, the Harrison Club took eleven of the thirteen trophies. At the state meet April 2, the D.E. club was named bClub of the Year and was awarded the sweepstakes award for winning the high- est number of points in all contests. Despite an occasional groan, the regular program of track, softball, basketball, volleyball, foot- ball and tumbling was again launched. Mr. Forney Exemplified True Warrior Spirit As members of the Harrison student body we have been indeed fortunate to have our future succeSs so well assured by the devotion, enthusiasm and spirit of such a leader as Mr. Paul G. Forney. He has left us a proud tradition and a firm foundation on which we shall continue to build and shape Harrisonis future. The feelings of trust and reliance we all shared for Mr. Forney made it even more difficult for us to accept the news of his death last: July 22. And yet it couldnit be said he died without having accomplished the largest and most demanding responsibility facing the principal of a new high school: that of bringing together the many school loyalties into one united effort. Probably Mr. Forney felt the most important ingredient in a successful school was student leadership, which he stressed in all areas of student affairs. He reasoned that the Himportant way in which our school must fulfill its function in nurturing student development would be through opportunity for students to share active responsibility in school affairs? In admiration for accomplishment he was generous, always keeping an eye open for the small as well as the large. He possessed a ready smile and a personality which always made one feel special and respond willingly. Each of us has his own way of remembering him. Whether itls by some occasion on which you walked with him in the halls while he asked you all about yourself, or by a speech in a pep assembly, helll always be remembered as the man who set the proud standards by which welre working today. v'wwM-ng , GARY CAWN Section Editor Mam JUNIOR GRIDDER STEVE Parrish finds daylight and races for the uprights to score six points against the Mt. Warrior Squad Completes F ighting Season No Harrison football team has Hlaid the blueprints of victory,l as well as this years team which surpassed all other years with its string of wins. Although the season was highly successful in that we achieved a record number of seven wins, a tie with the dominating city football team, a defeat of both the favored S.I.A.C. team and the eventual city and S.I.A.C. champs, a giant gap of two games was left. After a heartbreaking 6-0 loss in the seasons opener with North, Coach Don Watsonls Warriors showed the other city coaches how the game is played. While on the 11warpathu the Warriors defeated the eventual city champs, Memorial, in a 20-0 decision. SENIOR FULLBACK TIM Buehner awaits the handoff from Quarterback Terry Wedgewood. This play went around the end for a first down. 30 The following week brought a heart-stopper, as the War- riors battled the strong Reitz squad to a 12-12 tie, in a game that went all the way down to the wire. A series of five straight victories followed as the Warriors mowed down Central 23-6, Vincennes 58-6, Mt. Vernon 57-14, New Albany 33-0, and Bosse 19-14. The Warriors Victories over New Albany and Bosse were both hard fought wins and a test of the Warriors strength. Mater Dei proved to be the game that we would most like to forget as the Warriors were routed in a 13-0 decision. The final game of the season proved to be more exciting and a better game to view as the Warriors trounced Rex Mundi, 41-7. IS THERE REALLY a ball down there? While running the total wins to 40 straight season victor- ies, the Warriors defeated many strong city and SIAC teams. The tall and talented Warriors walked away with the City and SIAC crowns, but again the Sectional crown eluded them. With the change in plans of the playing dates for the high school baseball season the Warrior squad was cut in size and performance. However, many loyal athletes participated in the seasonal effort. Warrior Achievements Receive Honors Harrisonts athletic teams gained many awards for their excellence on the playing field. Great efforts in the fields of basketball, track and cross country aided the Warriors in their search for their second straight S.I.A.C. Trophy. The WarriorsT effort in tennis, wrestling, football, and golf greatly aided in attaining points for the coveted trophy. The Warriors piled up early points but did not hold a sub- stantial lead. The Warriors led into the final stages of com- petition, with the conclusion of the summer baseball season being the deciding factor. Besides team awards, many individual athletes were m0- mentarily put in the spotlight as they were chosen for awards and as members of all-city teams. Each year the members of the downtown Kiwanis Club award the most deserving athletes in football and basketball their honor. Senior class President Jim Campbell was award- ed the football trophy for his outstanding effort on the field as well as in the class room. Pete Helmbock was the Kiwanis basketball winner. Pete helped to lead the basketball team to a 20-2 season record and proved to be a leader on the court, the boards and in his academic achievements. Pep Club Plans 'Ha, Rolicking Assemblies 46 The Senior Pep Club of the Class of l66 will probably be most remembered for the creation of the red block llHl' sported during Sectionals. But this was only one of the many activities carried on during the year by the group. Assemblies during the year ranges from skits to guest speakers. Wholll ever forget Pete Helmbock as the Jolly Green Giant? Or sports writer Larry Stephensonls appear- ance during basketball season? The club also took charge of the coronation of the football and basketball queens and activities for both. But Hoosier hysteria brought things to life as posters filled the halls, Indian headbands were sold, and Color Day greeted the opening day of Sectionals. Even though many activities were centered around pep assemblies, groups gath- ered on nights before games to form caravans to downtown radio stations. With the help and cooperation of the other classes and members of the faculty, the Pep Club bolstered spirit to all corners of Harrison to back the Warriors in victory and defeat. To stimulate interest in dramatic productions, they went to various grade schools and presented short spots to the student bodies. Programs were also presented for the Dental Association Wives and the Desk and Derrick Asso- ciation. The livelinese of this yearls pep assemblies was intensified by the presence of the pep band playingr snappy marches and popular tunes. They were present at every assembly as students entered and left the gym. The pep band was not the only band that Harrison could be proud of. Pop bands composed of Harrison students played throughout the tri-state at parties, dances, and on TV. Some of the more popular groups, were the Nomads, Crescents, and the Turks. These different groups hired out to play for organizations or businesses rinl the Crescents even started their own teenage night club. These boys have also played in some of the many programs sponsored by the school. Bells were ringing in 501ne of the programe, too. The handebell choir was started this year with bells from Schul- merick Carelin.
