This year, our California Scholarship Federation Chapter has nearly two hundred members and we are one of the largest groups at Taft. Dues have been raised to one dollar to make it possible for more activities. Many events are planned each year, involving schools-from as far south as San Diego to as far north as Oakland, for example, fifty of our members participated in the U.C.L.A. Honor Day on November 9. After eating our fill of donuts and juice, we listened to a number of speakers. In February, we attended the South Regional Conference held at U.S.C., so our chapter received an honest glimpse of the two cross town rivals. Besides our own school happenings, CSF 0ff6YS a variety of scholarships for nation-wide colleges and universities to seniors who have been members for four semesters or more. identl, E. Deisel, C. Knowledge Bowl is the van- guard of intellectual stimulation and competition . Weekly meets pit brains and wits of rival high school teams in questions con- cerning not only general knowl- edge but the finer points of history, philosophy, theology, art, music, mathematics, science, and just plain non- sense , This year, t1e Taft team has proved itself able to better all opposing teams . The Chemistry Society of Taft High School was formed by a group of enterprising young chemistry students for the sole intent of bettering mankind. This goal has not been accom- plished yet, but the society continues to work toward it. Membership in the society is strictly limited to those aca- demic achievers demonstrating superior skills in chemistry, The club members have the unusual experience of being under the tutelage of the famed chemist William Kroot, who has kindly volunteered to assist the members in preparation for the prestigious American Chemistry Society High School Exam given every year. The club has held numerous seminars and visited such well known re- search facilities as Atomics International laboratory of North American Rockwell, lVlembers have utilized their knowledge of chemical theory by discovering practical uses for Quasidimentionalanalysis, the creation of perfumes, silver plating objects, and the produc- tion of contact explosive golf balls for the sponsor. l,4. ., ,V J w-unf-- --:qv lmggisuz ' , ,, I-Tuf ' , Knowledge Bowl KNEELING: M. Foreign Exchange Students Before I came to California, I heard Taft was a very good school, now I truly agree . So far, I have had only good experiences from this school and have found many good friends and very nice, understandable teachers with just a few exceptions, I am sure I will find usefulness for all that I have learned here at Taft later on in my life . I really want to thank all my friends and teachers who helped make my stay here in California so pleasant. George Avall Sweden Guillermo Sosa, Severine Taffonneau, Jonas Ollson, George Avall. I enjoy attending classes at Taft because Americans are exceptionally nice and more outgoing than Swedes. Nly sports interests are golf, hockey, ant skiing. Some of the most noticeable differences between America and Sweden are television and transporta- tion. In Sweden, shows are televised only between 6 and 11 PIVI, and there are no commercials. The main means of transportation is walking because the towns are all very close together. I enjoy my year in America, and I hope to return again in the nearby future. Jonas Ollson Sweden The Intercultural Exchange Club seeks to promote ex- periences and further under- standing between the foreign exchange students and the Taft student body . 44 FRONT ROW: A.
