Social Studies E The Social Studies department instituted some innovations during the past year, in- novations such as ten week classes and more varied course offerings. For example, such new and interesting things as Women, Yes! , Gatsby, California History 84 the Old West, Naval 84 Military History, Ancient Civiliza- tions, and News Analysis were offered. There was even an Experimental Government class given in summer school, in which stu- dents had the opportunity to visit courts, work for assemblymen, and generally gain a greater insight into the workings- of our gov- ernment. 30

Um-ned School District l' DRIVER Enuczmou y The Classroom section is a new feature this year, a feature that is meant to inform the stu- dents about the functions of the many academic departments and present candid photographs of students in specific classroom situations. Also, there is more writing in the yearbook this year. A picture may be worth a thousand words, but oftentimes things can be written better than they can be pictured. That is what was done this year. The Classroom section information was written by the Atinian Staff, whereas the club, sports, and faculty information was not. The club and sports paragraphs were written by the individual organizations and then edited by the Atinian Staff. Teachers wrote their own epitaphs. Hopefully, this book will be more enjoyable because of this extra dimension. 9 l as 1 Guidance looks to the future, which is some- thing most teenagers do not always find time to do. English, math, social studies, and all the other required classes are harc' to relate di- rectly to future occupations. That is where Guidance comes in, to inform students about the requirements for the jobs they are consider- ing and to show them which areas they are strongest in . Aptitude tests are administered and used, along with vocational information that the Guidance teachers have, to help stu- dents relate school with the future. Driver Education and Driver Training are quite possibly the most immediately relevant classes for tenth graders. In junior high school, stu- dents are dependent on parents for transporta- tion. But, after becoming fifteen years old, one is eligible for Driver Training, a learner's per- mit, and a life of considerably more freedom. Driver Education is the classroom session where the rules of the road are taught on a blackboard . Driver Training is the practical street experience necessary for driving a car during the rest of high school and life. inv 31
