He is known and respected throughout Virginia as well as at Fleming. As athletic director, head football and track coach, Mr. Smith has con- tributed much to the sports program of our school. Mr. Kenneth French is a great help to the coaching staff. His friendly manner with the boys and students as well as his excellent coaching ability have Won him a place of re- spect at Fleming. He served this year as head wrestling coach and as line coach in football. Mr. Jimmy Moore, in two years as head basketball coach and assistant football coach, has gained much respect as a line coach and a gantleman. We have found him to be a real asset to Fleming's staH'. Mr. Dan Wooldridge, a newcomer to Fleming this year, made a real contribution to the athletic program as coach of BU football, CFOSS-COu11tI'y, and junior varsity basketball. Mr. Jimmy Thompson Cnot pictured abovej, who joined the Fleming faculty in December, has been a great help with the Junior High teams. A FIRST Row: D. Hfoolwivze, B. Allen, B. flveron, B. Wada, D. With many ex- perienced boys back from the ,55 season, Coach Smith and his staff had very little trouble building a powerful team. In the first game the Colonels romped over Covington 42-6, using only reserves in the second half. In spite of predictions, the Colonels upset a powerful E. C. Glass team I3-6 in a well-played game. Flemingls outstanding defense was the deciding factor. The Jefferson game again proved to be a heartbreaker for the second time in three years. After trailing the Colonels all the way, the Football cross-town rivals tied the game at I3-I3 with a last-minute desperation pass. The only loss of the year was to George Washington of Alexandria. The boys played hard but the powerful team of G. W. Won, I8-2. In the next contest, the Colonels were pushed to overcome a hard-playing Andrew Lewis team, I4-O. Another disappointment was suffered at Ivlartinsville when the Colonels could do no more than tie the scrappy Bulldogs. Despite the loss of several outstanding players, prospects for next season are en- couraging. Date Opponent SEPTEIIBER 14-Covington .... 21-E. C. Glass ....... 28-Jefferson ......,.. On the surface this doesn't seem impressive, but when all factors are considered, the season can well be termed successful. The Troutville game was marked by first- game nervousness. The poorest played was the Andrew Lewis game, the team just couldnlt seem to get going. The boys played a good game against Jefferson, only to have it end in a deadlock. In the next game Fleming proved just too much for an outclassed V. E. S. team. However, their best game of the season was against E. C. Glass, despite the fact that neither team was quite able to reach pay dirt. The B team closed its season by posting an impressive win over Covington. 1 W s , I, -Mfr fum -V :uw A xx. any fi i X 1 E M x i i L ws- . w ..i. x i x i i , . x i Action On The Gridiron Burger comes over to help. 2. The twelve boys that went through the season, lacking ex- perience and height, gave their all and con- tinued to give, even in defeat. VVilliam Fleming students, fans and players never gave up the ship, even when things looked the darkest. This is one of the things that made Coach iVIoore consider this team a success. Team play was the keynote of this fine performance. This victory helped ease the pain of past defeats. The fine playing of Jim Beheler, Micliey Janney, Bob Trinko, Ronald Coleman, Phil Fracker, and Rusty Sutphin will be missed next year, but prospects for the 1957-1958 season are bright. In the first Virginia .Tech Relays, Dean Price won the discus, Bob Bowman placed 3rd in the mile, and Bob Trinko was 4th in the high Jump. This year Fleming entered the State Group I Meet for the first time. Bob Trinko tied for znd in the high jump, Bob Bowman placed 3rd in the mile, and Dean Price took 4th in the discus. The Lady Colonels Girls' sports this year have been strictly for fun-and for earning points in G. A. A. VVe had two volleyball teams that had a lot of fun and played some good games but not enough to bring home a trophy. The same is true of the Blue and Gold basketball teams. They were so evenly matched they tied each other for standing in the league, but didnlt win enough games for hrst or second place. The girls have had a good time, have improved in their playing and have learned a lot about basketball. Folk and square dancing proved to the girls that something other than rock and roll can tire you out. Swinging your partner, grand right and left, ladies star, and dos a dos can be a lot of fun, too. The Annual Staff of 1957 hopes it has met the goal for everyone and that the 1957 COLONEL will be a book treasured for life. Producing a yearbook involves many varied and interesting activities. The first jobs are soliciting advertising, securing subscriptions, and taking pictures. Then follows the Organ- izing of the book, the compiling of copy, the arranging of pictures, and making decisions on many problems. Most Of the work is done behind closed doors so that the annual will be a complete surprise to the students. Outside Of the hard work each staff member does in editing and publishing the COLONEL, we have fun Working together in class and on Our yearly Outing. .i ev, 1 may Q m,ea..vL -M n an ww CAROL VAUGI-IAN .... ...... . ...... Later in the fall, the annual Reception was held, at which every Y-Teen had a marvelous time. This year instead of having the Recognition Service in a church, as has been the custom, it was decided to have it in assembly so that it might be an inspiration to others as Well as to Y- Teens. This was done, and the program was very elfective. In November, several Fleming Y-Teens attended the city-Wide Half-Day Conference on The World's Great Religions at the Y. W. C. A. SECOND Row: H. At Christmas the choir presented the cantata, Song of Christmas , for the Thurs- day hlorning Music Club and again at the Huntington Court Methodist Church for the student body. We took part in a program given for the public at jefferson High School, appeared on television, and sang carols in the halls of Fleming for the students and teachers. In February, our choir joined other school choirs and the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra in the presentation of the cantata, Drum Taps. Ten members of the choir were chosen for All-State Chorus West which was held at Blacksburg. The choir presented assemblies at Fleming and also traveled to neighboring schools to give programs. In the spring the choir gave its Spring Concert and later sang for the graduation exercises. After completing a full year of hard work and fun the choir members enjoyed the annaul swimming party at Oliver's Pool. Iunior Red Cross SANDRA ATKINSON. . . JIMMY WOOD ..... LAURA IRELAND .... It has been a fast growing organization as each year the members and its boosters have endeavored to make it a better band and an asset to YVilliam Fleming High School. This year the Pep Band played at all pep assemblies and all home basketball games. Due to other schools organizing pep bands, our band was able to play at only one out-of- town game, that being E. C.
