ha. What are we going to do in gym class this year? Oh, no-please, no exercisesln Glory be, but Iam sore.', So we began our year in the girls' gym class. Exercises first, a necessary evil to prove we still have many muscles we rarely use and to make us appreciate our sports program more. Came the end of the exercises and the stiH muscles, and we took to the field for a round of softball games before the weather drove us indoors. Volleyball was our first indoor sport. A snappy round-robin tournament in each gym class came first. The competition was close and exciting but class champions were finally decided. In third period the team led by Betty Hedge was champion and in fourth period Mary Ellen Purvis' team won. Then in an activity period game these two teams fought it out for school championship. Fourth period won this coveted distinction. We also had two teams in the Recreation League, a Blue and a Gold. We didn't win any trophies but we know no one else had any more fun. Basketball season started just before Christmas holidays and we again had a round-robin tournament in each gym class. Each team played a total of fourteen games. The season was climaxed by a good fast game between the team from third period captained by Janice Collins and the one from fourth period captained by Bernita Geiser. Again the fourth period was victor. Following basketball came paddle badminton, which was managed in the same way as the other sports. Eighth graders who were class champs in volleyball were led by Betty Hambrick, and in basketball by Marita McDaniel. Softball, as sure a sign of spring as the bluebirds and robins, took us out of doors into the sunshine and sometimes when the games were close we stayed when it rained a bit. Rain is good for flowers-so why not for girls? At any rate it all added up to more points toward the coveted numerals and letters in G. A. A. This year, we believe, we can truthfully say the Girls' Athletic Association has been a success. More and more girls are earning points, requesting member- ship and going ahead to earn their numerals and letters. Betty Matthews, Jeane Menefee and Liz Hambrick had earned their letters when this was written and Bernita Geiser, Sylvia Bushnell, Mary Ellen Purves and Phyllis Kelley will have theirs by the end of the year. In league basketball the Gold team did very well in a hotly contested battle for second place. VVe held our first G. A. A. supper-a pot-luck affair at the Oakland Baptist Church Recreation Hall. Such fun-and so much food! Perhaps in another year we can have more socials-we hope. Come on, girls, join with us! The G. A. A. is one organization that believes in the more the merrier and the more girls we can get actively interested in sports the better we'll like it. -wif 21 E1-
