leaning A coach's dream of an excellent basketball team is of one which has five superior players on it. They must be good defensive players and good shots from anywhere on the court. In order to have this dream team, a coach must spend much of his time and effort teaching these boys how to play with ease and confidence. He must teach them to la to ether as a team instead of la in for individual honors. lS ream team IS compose o two ast guart s, two goo re oun mg orwar s, an an exce ent Th'd ' df Fygi dbdpfygd d ll center, who can control the backboard and make the offensive plays click with perfection. The Fleming Cagers were listed potentially as a team that might flll a coach's dream. We had eight lettermen who were experienced and ready to play good basketball. We had all the height that was needed to make an excellent team. We had the speed which is not absolutely necessary but is nice to have: we had the experience of the boys working together. But our team ran hot and cold during the regular season. Some of the reasons for this were the mental attitude of the boys, illness, and the lack of a complete experienced team. 5 The mental attitude of the whole team is the thing which determines the winnin or losin 1 of a Thb b' dh'l di' bl ll h'h hb'g F f game. e oys can em goo p ysica, con 1t1on ut ow menta y w IC was t e iggest reason 0 our team's win and loss record. Of course illness, and an inexperienced team also affected our record. We had eight lettermen from last year, yet they didn't make up a complete team. We had fast guards and good forwards but no experienced center. It is said that no team is stronger than its center. In our case we were faced with building a new center. Coach tried several of the boys until he found one who had the potentialities of a good center. However, middle of the season, he broke his ankle and had to be replaced. We are proud to say that this yearls basketball team is the best all-round team that Fleming has ever had. There were no individual stars as in years p3St, but it was a team that played as a real team should. We can safely say that Fleming never stopped playing until the final whistle was blown in any game. Although, we were beaten several times, our boys held high the tradition of good sportsmanship of which Fleming is proud. Our team went on to victory by winning the District Six Championship. With all these outstanding features, we think the William Fleming Basketball Team has had one of its most successful seasons.
