The days of this year have been abundant in notable eventsfvsome joyful, some sad, some exciting, some glorious, and some serious. Not only are these days important because of their meaning today, but for their meaning in days to come. XVe have arranged the sections of the annual to coincide, as near as possible, with the time period having the most prominent dates relating to that section- The Administration with the beginning of schoolffAthletics with the time of District 6 Football Championship-Classes with the time of mid-term tests- Activities with the time of outings and social eventsfand Advertisements, which help to make the yearbook possible, to close the book. A calendar distinguishes important or otherwise memorable days from the others by red print or some other contrasting means. We, the Annual Staff of I953, sincerely hope we have met these expectations and that this yearbook will be a book treasured for life. Editing and publishing the COLONEL is a job of hard and constant work offset by the fun we have working together in class and on our yearly outing. The first jobs are those of advertisement solicitation, subscription drive, and picture taking. Then follow the organ- izing of the book, the compiling of copy, the arranging of pictures, and the deciding of many problems. Some of the work is done with the help and cooperation of other students but the major part is done behind closed doors so that the content and design of the annual are a complete surprise to the students. Now we can sit back and enjoy, as we are sure you will, the Fmished product of our labor. Look at it, read it, enjoy itg both today and in days to come. Llzrr: Mr. and Mfr. IV. A. Cnultzr and Billy. Your school life has given you multiple opportunities to experience growth and personal development. Your Annual is an attempt to reffect some of those opportunities, with illustrations involving you and your friends. That section headed Administration gives you the pictures of your faculty and information about them. We assume you know what many did, because you worked with them at various times. However, here you have a listing of degrees obtained, and subjects taught by each. Classes, in the Annual, mean group divisions for administrative purposes. Each person is ranked with his class group according to the number of credits he has in September of the current term. Ninth graders must have completed eighth grade, tenth graders must have at least 3 unitsg eleventh graders must have at least 7 units, and twelfth graders must have at least II units. A minimum of I6 units is required for graduation. These units are earned by successful completion of the various courses offered in the high school program. Activities represent our efforts to answer the human need for doing things together above and beyond the basic minimum. Your course work represents the least you can do to be exposed to what we call an education. Your sports, your clubs and your publications give you opportunities beyond this minimum, opportunities just as broad as you yourself wish to make them! Our Sports program is geared to offer everybody something. Human nature being what it is, some find themselves participants in allg others have but a single favored field. We take pride in the number participating in each interscholastic sport for the boys, and in the excellent perform- ance shown by our teams in each sport. We have no interscholastic program for girls, but our ntramural offerings are broad enough to find appeal for any normal girl. Administratively, we are always proud of our publications. Much hard work goes into our Newspaper, and into our Annual. And we believe the end products show that it is effort well spent. Our Clubs are always into some type of action which provides for fun and training for members and they often extend benefits to other youth groups or to adults apart from the school. Our advertisers are our financial backers. It is through their contributions in cash that we are able to produce an annual. The sale price would pay only a small portion of the cost. We are honor bound to support these advertisers even as they are supporting us. Keep them in mind! Visit them! Patronize t e l QA Vx.. u- ,X I' ' W. A. COULTER X Q44 Z-dfdccff, ' ,Cf 1 AERA 'ks vu. They have spent hours thinking, planning, and Worrying about the outcome of the games We were to play. They have spent hours teaching us how to play football. They have trained us to be out- standing athletes and good sports. To our Coaches, We give credit for having the highest scoring football team in the history of our school. While We glory in our success of the year, We give thanks to the Coaches. -121 12 E+ Ddclubz' Six and ?!ae 2:2194 egimal 'yaatlall 4 The phrase, Fleming Will Win Tonightf' is certainly true of the football team this year. The Colonels made an impressive mark not only in their own record book but in the City, County, and State records. The team secored 285 points to the opponent's SQ which gave them the highest scoring record ever achieved. Both the District Six Championship and the Blue Ridge Regional Championship were won this year. Our lightning-like backs and scrappy linemen always had the score com- pletely out of reach sometime during the third period and then turned the mopping up over to the reserves. Except for the opening game with Jefferson, the aggressive Colonels were never pushed into playing a full game of real football. With the exception of the game with Andrew Lewis, in which the Wolverines scored in the starting minutes, the first team was never scored upon and always the opponentls score came late in the game when the reserves were playing. As far as picking out individual stars, defensively or offensively, that job would be impossible. The Colonels was a team in every sense of the word. Every player did his job and did it to the best of his ability. Never has a team played together with such unity. When we scored a touchdown, there was more behind the story than the ball carrier scoring. The linemen and the other backs threw blocks and carried out their vital assignments in order that the ball carrier could score. Without this he would have never gained a yard. This teamwork was the key to the success of our team. VVith the lights of this most successful football season fading, the memories of this team will never be forgotten by the players or supporters. Looking over the season it can easily be said that the 1952 football team was one of the best- if not the best-to ever wear the Blue and Gold. They must be good defensive players and good shots from anywhere on the court. In order to have this dream team, a coach must spend much of his time and effort teaching these boys how to play with ease and confidence. He must teach them to la to ether as a team instead of la in for individual honors. lS ream team IS compose o two ast guart s, two goo re oun mg orwar s, an an exce ent Th'd ' df Fygi dbdpfygd d ll center, who can control the backboard and make the offensive plays click with perfection. The Fleming Cagers were listed potentially as a team that might flll a coach's dream. We had eight lettermen who were experienced and ready to play good basketball. We had all the height that was needed to make an excellent team. We had the speed which is not absolutely necessary but is nice to have: we had the experience of the boys working together. But our team ran hot and cold during the regular season. Some of the reasons for this were the mental attitude of the boys, illness, and the lack of a complete experienced team. 5 The mental attitude of the whole team is the thing which determines the winnin or losin 1 of a Thb b' dh'l di' bl ll h'h hb'g F f game. e oys can em goo p ysica, con 1t1on ut ow menta y w IC was t e iggest reason 0 our team's win and loss record. Of course illness, and an inexperienced team also affected our record. We had eight lettermen from last year, yet they didn't make up a complete team. We had fast guards and good forwards but no experienced center. It is said that no team is stronger than its center. In our case we were faced with building a new center. Coach tried several of the boys until he found one who had the potentialities of a good center. However, middle of the season, he broke his ankle and had to be replaced. We are proud to say that this yearls basketball team is the best all-round team that Fleming has ever had. There were no individual stars as in years p3St, but it was a team that played as a real team should. We can safely say that Fleming never stopped playing until the final whistle was blown in any game. Although, we were beaten several times, our boys held high the tradition of good sportsmanship of which Fleming is proud. Our team went on to victory by winning the District Six Championship. With all these outstanding features, we think the William Fleming Basketball Team has had one of its most successful seasons. Exercises first, a necessary evil to prove we still have many muscles we rarely use and to make us appreciate our sports program more. Came the end of the exercises and the stiH muscles, and we took to the field for a round of softball games before the weather drove us indoors. Volleyball was our first indoor sport. A snappy round-robin tournament in each gym class came first. The competition was close and exciting but class champions were finally decided. In third period the team led by Betty Hedge was champion and in fourth period Mary Ellen Purvis' team won. Then in an activity period game these two teams fought it out for school championship. Fourth period won this coveted distinction. We also had two teams in the Recreation League, a Blue and a Gold. We didn't win any trophies but we know no one else had any more fun. Basketball season started just before Christmas holidays and we again had a round-robin tournament in each gym class. Each team played a total of fourteen games. The season was climaxed by a good fast game between the team from third period captained by Janice Collins and the one from fourth period captained by Bernita Geiser. Again the fourth period was victor. Following basketball came paddle badminton, which was managed in the same way as the other sports. Eighth graders who were class champs in volleyball were led by Betty Hambrick, and in basketball by Marita McDaniel. Softball, as sure a sign of spring as the bluebirds and robins, took us out of doors into the sunshine and sometimes when the games were close we stayed when it rained a bit. Rain is good for flowers-so why not for girls? At any rate it all added up to more points toward the coveted numerals and letters in G. A. A. This year, we believe, we can truthfully say the Girls' Athletic Association has been a success. More and more girls are earning points, requesting member- ship and going ahead to earn their numerals and letters. Betty Matthews, Jeane Menefee and Liz Hambrick had earned their letters when this was written and Bernita Geiser, Sylvia Bushnell, Mary Ellen Purves and Phyllis Kelley will have theirs by the end of the year. In league basketball the Gold team did very well in a hotly contested battle for second place. VVe held our first G. A. A. supper-a pot-luck affair at the Oakland Baptist Church Recreation Hall. Such fun-and so much food! Perhaps in another year we can have more socials-we hope. Come on, girls, join with us! The G. A. A. is one organization that believes in the more the merrier and the more girls we can get actively interested in sports the better we'll like it. -wif 21 E1- union Wmacllq f-JS? Q3 A .ig QED? ROMA GUSTIN ,F ' ' ' ' ' 'spomou The Student Cooperative Association, sponsored by the P. T. A., serves as the coordinating head of all club activities and major school projects. Every student is a member. The council is composed of all club and class presidents, home-room representatives, and S. C. A. officers, who are elected annually by the student body. The council meets monthly and the oflicers preside at the assembly each month. The S. C. A. conducted the first assembly, in which we gave a welcome to all the new and old students. In No- vember, in recognition of American Education Week, the S. C. A. and the Beta Club gave a tea for the faculty and former graduates who are teaching in Roanoke. One of our annual projects is the filling of Christmas baskets for the needy families. This year we filled more baskets than in any of the previous years. These baskets were presented during a very inspiring Christmas assembly program. Also during the Christmas season, we cooperated with the Chamber of Commerce in the Christmas Parade by having Carol Crockett as our representative. Another project was the publication of the Student Handbook, which was begun last year. These books were prepared for the general information of both the old and new students. S. C. A. delegates attended the District meeting in the fall and the State Convention in the spring, at Mary Washington College. Our president conducted a discussion group at the state convention. The Spring Formal was a big success. livery one had a good time and the orchestra was enjoyed by all. Another interesting experience of the year was an exchange of S. C. A. ofhcers with those of Jefferson. This gave us an opportunity to observe the council at work and exchange ideas. This has proven to be a very active year for the S. C. A.. but it would not have been possible without the whole- hearted support of every student and the wonderful guidance of our sponsors, Xlrs. Painter and Mrs. Gustin. XY. C. A. for IQS2-53. Fleming girls this year realized the full mean- ing of I Belongf, for they have had many activities within their own clubs that gave the feeling of Belonging. Also the local Y. XV. C. A. offered opportunities of belonging to a city-county- wide organizationg a State group, by entertaining the Y-Teen State Conference, and of a National organization, by making it possible for Roanoke Y-Teens to meet lNIiss Mary Perry and Nliss VVinifred W'ygal of the National Board. Isolde Wachter, our exchange student from Germany, has given us a keener feeling of world-wideness and world fellowship. Having her as a member of our club has been a real joy and because of our friendship with her we sent 500 bars of Chocolates for Christmas carrying our spirit and our Christian love to her country. The Dance Choruses, Teller Staff, and Choirs have given many girls opportunities to con- tribute to the clubs. For the first time two Y-Teen choirs were organized. Carol Crockett and Barbara Hostetter directed well and faithfully the Junior and Senior Choirs with Myrna Baldwin and joe Ann Dobbins as accompanists. The Dance choruses were well trained by Ruth Downard and Doris Painter and jo Ann iX1cNeer was ever faithful as Editor of the Teller. -at 62 lie 1 .Innior Cabinet. 2 llalf-Daly Conference. 3 :Xll aboard on the Carry-alll .Q Directors Carol and Barbara: .Xccompanists Xlyrna amlkloeflnii. 5 Xliss Self Y-'Il-cn Din-crm I Gilda and Santa tliilly Root I. 7 lloinc Room keys. 8 Sondra Ric-rs in dancing. 0 lea-for Nlary l'arry. Our Y-'I'een daughters, Gladys Bailey and Gilda Johnston, gave us joy as we shared with them our love, time and material gifts. Recognition Service, Fashion Show, Christmas Pageant, lloly Wieck Services, May Day, Dad-Daughter Dinner, Mother-Daughter Banquet, Officers' Training Clinic, Showers for the Y-'l'een Daughters, Service projects, and other activities. Nancy .lo and Klartha, our capable presidents, led the cabinets into planning these worth- while activities and ever kept in mind each Y-Teen as a part ofthe club. The club appreciates the cooperation and good will of the faculty and the ever constant support and loyalty of the Y-Teen mothers. It is always a pleasure to work with the lli-Y's in joint projects such as l Ii-Y Y-Teen Ban- quets. Holy Week Services, May Day, and Pageants. We greatly appreciate the line cooperation of Donnie Qlamison, P. 'l'. johnson and their clubs in the Christmas program. The Y-Teens have certainly felt more than ever the good feeling of Belonging to the local clubs, local Y. XY. C. A., city-county group, State, National, and Vl'orld organizations. ' The Fleming Chapter of the F. H. A. started off the year by giving a tea in honor of the new members. In October at least ninety per cent of the permanent members attended the fall Roanoke Area Federation meeting held this year at Woodrow Wilson. One phase of the F. H. A. program which the students always welcome is the presenting of pins which were received this year in February. At that time the second-year members were awarded pin guards. At different times throughout the year, students sold furniture polish in order to add a little cash to our treasury. To eIId the year, we saw a big tur11out for the Spring Federation Meeting and for our annual outing which was our final activity. egg 67 53+ Tenth Anniversary Year! CATHERINE Looms l Literary season, 1952-53, saw Inueh excitement in the literary held, many triumphs for Fleming contenders, so that, all in all, we can write Success to our season. First, and most exciting, was the State Championship win of Peggy Lou Bower, who gained fame for herself and Fleming by emerging first speaker in Virginia in the American Legion contest in April, 1952. Next, there was the State Championship debate team, composed of Hunter Akers and Richard Townsend, who carried the Blue and Gold to a decisive win at the University of Virginia by defeating all comers in State Debate for I052. Then there was the triumph of The Bearon, our creative writing booklet, with a state championship as the 'K Best Booklet in its Class in the State,'l and individual honors for Clarence Parker, Bill Iago, Robley Light, Mary Alice Powell, Paul Iddin ,s, and Bernita Geiser. Thciiall of I952 brought a signal honor of first place to our talented and popular exchange student, Isolde IfVachter from Germany, who won the Roanoke I Speak for Democracy Contest. Dean Doss won third honors in that, too, which gave to Fleming two out of three places in this contest. As 'THE COLONEL goes to press, we find Allen Ault busy at work on his American Legion Speech, while Bill, Clarence, Robley, Eddie, Sallie, and other Literary Lights are hard at work on debate material. Soon, speakers and readers must be chosen, and plans completed for our annual forensics. Some of this preparation is certain to add up to a trip to Charlottesville and perhaps, once again, VICTORY! In the meantime, we carry on by speaking on city programs, for many civic drives, we serve on radio programs, we plan assembly programs and learn, by serving our community, the fascinating business of reading, speaking, debating, spelling, and writing for ourselves, and for the public. -if 69 I-3+ ecigicz ii ? iiQ I 3 . tx le M-si Scenes from Dickens' Christmas Carol CURTAIN CALL The season was ushered in with brisk tempo, as Voices were raised in civic speeches of energetic pleas. Berwald, has just completed a very enjoyable year. 'l'hree years ago the Band consisted of thirteen members, but since then it has increased in number and skill. We played at all home football games and traveled with the District Six Champions to Xlartinsville. We also played at several college football games. liarly in the year we went to Bristol to take part in a large parade and contest. During the year we played for assemblies, and gave concerts at other schools in the city. :Xt Christmas we took part in the Santa Clans Parade and in a joint concert with the jefferson Band. This is now an annual affair at Christmas. The year was cliniaxed by our 'l'hird Annual Band Concert held Xlarch ZI, lllhe proceeds from this concert were used to send the band to Wiashington, D. C., to take part in the National .-X. ,-X. A. parade held each year in Nlay. This was the l5and's biggest trip of the year. 'llhe year was closed with a spring outing given by the Band Parents' Club to show their appreciation for the work the students put forth during the year. Some of our students participated in All-State Band. which was held in Bluefield, West Virginia. Since we are only losing a few by graduation. we are looking forward to a more prosperous and growing hand next year. ill 79 Wafzadlq .-X1.1f111-111 xlCCI.l-QXRN . , . . . . . . l,Vt',l'I-tffllf liruxm' XX'1N111-'11-31.11 .
