Immigration continues, science progresses, production advances, and discoveries grow. All of these things are made possible by people working together for the betterment of humanity. Thus inspired by the realization of brotherhood, cooperation, and mutual understand- ing, we have chosen the theme The World and I for our 1949 yearbook. Not all of our time has been spent in whimsical activities, not all of our thoughts have been centered on useless things because we realize the seriousness of turmoil. VVe, as well as the great leaders of the world, are crying for peace. The W'or1d and I must bring about the necessary changes for political and social rest. Read and enjoy the pages that the Annual Stalf has endeavored to publish for you. They tell the story of your sojourn at Fleming. I . . IVE DEDICATE THIS NINETEEN FORTY-NINE EDITION OF THE COLONEL TO OUR SPONSOR, NIRS. VIRGINIA T. KIRKWOOD. VVE ARE GRATEEUL TO HER FOR HER EVER FAITHEUL GUIDANCE AND GENIAL MANNER IN WORKING WITH STUDENTS. I'irgin1'a Kirkwood Wo, the Annual Stall' of I949, have endeavored to give you a good annual, one which you will cherish for life as a book of memories. This is your book for you to enjoyg we have tried to record the things you have done during your school year. This animal has been a lot of fun and work for all of us. For our tirst activity we presented a kick-oil assembly program for the yearbook subscription campaign. Mary Alice and Betty Rose played the part of two old ladies, who, while thumbing through their H349 annual, looked back upon their school days at Fleming. These scenes were portrayed by the staff. Then the work really started: we had to get ads, take subscriptions, and compile this yearbook. May you read and enjoy this annual now and the remainder of your life. - ,ff 1, A ' Q Q0 ff 549 wa? The live years that we have spent in high school have passed rapidly. Since the end is so near, we feel sad and reluctant to go: but all good things must come to an end. Time can never erase the memories of parties, dances, games, dates, and dramatic events. Even thoughts of our studies will linger long in our minds. Our school leaders have endeavored to give us the proper guidance to meet the challenges that await us. The 1f'0V'llI'IH1li I cannot and will not fail them. CLASS SPON SORS Xlks. The line iII front of the ticket booth is already very long. Rooms 3, 4, and 5, are a hubbub of excitement. Ruth, Aubrey and Zona check the stage for scripts as they watch the clock for the magic minute. The dance chorus is in the hall going over last-minute steps, while in the mal-Ie-up room, the cast watches as years are added to jimmy, Rosalie, Pat, and bl. H. The glamour girls of the play lin silks and satins and buttons and bowsl start gathering up fans, parasols, and plume hats. The magic moment for the amateur premiere of Meet Me ln St. Louis, is about to begin, and Fleming Masquers score another hit. The auditorium is very dark as the student body tiles in for its Friday assembly. The scripture is read, an- nouncements are made, and then Mary Alice steps out to announce her cast. The curtains part and we are carried under the sea iIIto a wrecked submarine, with five desperate and frightened members of the crew. Submerged is being presented and the cast, Frank. Bobby, Billy Ling, Lynwood, Bill Carter, and the villian, Bill Hale, deserve the extra applause and comments which they received as the audience gave this comment. Goshl That was the best yet. In cooperation with the Speech Department, the Nlasquers presented The Family Tree in March, and ll one-act play was prepared for the tournament. In this endeavor we seek to understand Jesus. to share His love for all people, and to grow in knowl- edge and love of God'. In order to carry out this purpose and the three sides of the triangle, we held a local conference. with the theme, Are You Living? which was fun and successful. It was one of the most outstanding works of this year's activities. b It was a rare privilege and great honor to have our Secretary, Jean Prillaman, represent Roanoke teen-agers at the National Convention in California in March. The Journalism Class sponsored the first assembly program as a kick-off for the campaign for subscriptions. In the spring, an outing was held for members and their dates. The aim of the Fleming Flaxh is to be a paper for the enjoyment ofthe students as well as a source of information. It is hoped that the student body has enjoyed the Fleming Flafh this year, as much as the stalf has enjoyed bringing it to you. INSET: R. Wilmn and N. Hurd, Co-Editorf. FIRST ROW: N. Hurd, B. They were good enough to get in the District VI Tournament in Blacksburg but were unfortunate in drawing Radford, the top team in the tournament, as an opponent. Fleming fought hard and gave them some bit of a scare, losing by three points. This year's quintet was based on five lettermen, James Saul, Jimmy Slaydon, Ralph Higgins, Eddie Perdue, and Ray Otey. The newcomers were Bob Jenrette, Ncb White, Bobby Bohon, Cecil Williamson, Henry Dunlap, Thomas Basham, Ray Walters, and Bill Britts, who took the place of Buddy Smith during his absence. The managers for this year were very eflicient, headed by Leonard Gisiner, assisted by Bill Craft, and J. H. Caricofe. Bill Craft will be head manager for the coming year. ' The Colonels won seven games, and lost ten, three of which were lost to Class A schools and two losses from Roanoke College Junior Varsity. The team played two overtime games, one with Blacksburg, and one with Radford. The only boys graduating this year are Ray Otey, Neb White, and Bobby Bohon. All the others will remain for the coming year. B S Date Team We They Date Tram IV: Thzy Dec. zo-Alumni. ,...... .. 24. Jan. JI-JCHEPSOH ...... 22 54. SEMONES H6635- 01l4'afw11fq Again the Colonelettes started the year with practically a green team, as only four members of the squad had had any experience in inter-scholastic basketball. In so far as games were concerned the team has not done too badly, having Won 6 and tied I out of a total of I2 games played. The trouble has been that the games Won did not count toward tournament ratings. I Hudson, as the guard who tied up opposing forwards under the basket, has proven her worth time and again. Her regular helpers, Umberger and Prillaman have also done a good job. All three have been given plenty of compe- tition by Crowgey, the little girl with the long arms, King and Webber. In the forward positions competition has been stiff, with no one ever being sure who would be in the starting line- up. Nancy Callison has been the most consistent scorer for the season, crowning her achievement when she scored 23 of the 29 points made in the second game with Byrd. She has been given able assistance by Ruth Callison, Weaver, Semones, hflays, Anderson, and Hash. Taken as a whole this year's squad has been a hard-working, cheerful, agreeable one and though its members may not enter the tournament play they have learned a lot about basketball and sportsmanship. The manager, tiny, cheerful Emma Hutchins, has been a grand moral support as well as a willing worker. She still says she'd rather keep time than score, so Marie Arrington, a member of last year's squad, has been scorer for the girls this year. The girls have chosen game captains this year rather than having one captain for the year. league 7eamd In addition to the Varsity squad, Fleming has had two teams of girls in the City Recreation League. The Blue Team, or the junior Varsity, composed mainly of girls on the Varsity tryout squad who did not make Varsity, won the championship in the Blue division of the U B League, having lost only one game out of eight played. The second, or Gold Team, composed of girls who like basketball and loved having a chance to play, placed third in the Blue division of the B League, having lost three games out of eight played. The cheerleaders organized in the summer and, under the capable leadership of Butch, practiced weekly to be ready and in trim for that first game of the season. Along with practicing, there were shopping tours for uniforms. That was fun, too, for those loud, gay, gold sweaters resulted. Of course, there were knittiri parties. 'When September rolled around and we saw our jackets, which were a surprise, we were over-joyed. The new monogranis for our gold sweaters and our new, big, gold F's for our blue sweaters were nice, too. The scene was set for a wonderful year and it was just that except for the illness of several squad members and the coach during basketball season. But Donna Ray, head cheerleader of the Junior Squad, helped us when we were short-handed. The four juniors and Miss Morris entertained the live seniors at the Moon Mansion just before Christmas. lt was a swanky Blue and Gold butlet supper. The squad dined out many times, but one of the most memorable occasions was the luncheon at Bows, March 12th when we made the movies. WVe almost thought we were in Hollywood. Those trips in the Xlichael Bakery station wagon were beyond description. Even though Fleming teams were not always on the winning end, we enjoyed doing all we could to help and it was exciting watching the games and cheerleading for the teams. Vlie greatly appreciate the fine support we received from the students and are indebted to them. The 1948-49 cheerleading squad could not have had anything but a line spirit and a gay time with Butch as head. It is greatly appreciative of her and wishes her the best of everything upon her graduation. lfVe also want. to express our thanks to Miss Thelma Nlorris, coach of our squad. VVe have appreciated her patience, cooperation, and help at all times. egg as 25+ anim Gawile ' Squad DONNA RAY HOLT .... .... I lead Miss VFHELMA Mounts ,... . . .Conch Students, here's something new in our annual and, indeed, it was something new for us. The Junior Squad made its first appearance at Fleming in September, 1948. The members are very grateful to the committee for selecting two squads, for it gave more girls a chance. This squad consists of Freshmen and Sophomores, except for the head cheerleader, who is a junior. The outstanding social event of the year was the Christmas dinner at the home of the coach where gifts were exchanged and much fun was had. The girls also enjoyed the dinner party at W'oodson's with the Senior Squad on Home-Coming Day. The Squad hopes that it has been an asset to the l45-POl1l1tl team, Ito-pound team, Junior Varsity Football Team and the two basketball teams of girls in the league. It also yelled for the Alumni at the Alumni Varsity games. One of the most enjoyable week ends was the Home- Coming events which both squads shared together. The junior Squad feels much indebted to the Senior Squad for its ever helping hand during the summer months while both were training and to Donna Ray for her able leadership and unselhsh spirit in all that she did. lVe also want to thank Miss Nlorris, our coach, for her loyal help.
