Hiwewafz For the past few years, war and smashing world events have been the things we've talked about, read about, and written about. Consequently, in previous years Annual themes have dealt with relative subjects. Now, with the return of peace and the beginning of the establishment of good will all over the world, we can once again turn our thoughts to the little things we knew and loved before the terrible international conflict. Recognizing this, we, of the 1946 Annual Staff, have chosen a comparatively simple subject, School Activities, as our theme. lVe think it is more than fitting at the present time, for upon our shoulders falls the responsibility of build- ing a bright, new world. The training we receive in the classroom, and the tolerance we learn through student government and clubs, the respect with which we treat our teachers and fellow students, all prepare us to meet our obligations in later life. We sincerely hope, as you turn these pages now, and in years to come, that they will strike a familiar note and bring to mind all the unforgettable experiences that make high school years wonderful years. ,ggigbdlwfl To the sponsors of Tm: COLONEL, Nlrs. Mason, Rlrs. Young and Miss James, who have been patient in service, eager in interest, unfaltering in sympathy, unstinting in their generosity of time and labor, who, through their unswerving efforts, have made this First peaceful year one of enjoyment and inspiration for us, we, the Senior Class, clo gratefully and affectionately dedicate this 1946 issue of 'PHE COLONEL. Powell When school life at Fleming is over, it will be a great pleasure to think back upon the happy days we have spent here, and to think of the friendships we have formed. Vile feel sure that no boy or girl will go from this school who does not feel that he or she can be a bigger, a broader, a better citizen by having come in contact with our principal, Mrs. Powell, of whom we think as our guide. After a while we shall be able to appreciate even more than we do now the value of her work in giving us the proper training. We are grateful for everything that Mrs. Powell has done for us during our five years at Fleming because we realize that her determined efforts as principal have made our school life successful. For us Juniors, only one more year of school life remains. Realizing this, we have done our best to make this one of the most eventful years in our school's historyg one we shall always remember in years to come. Our first activity was a comedy radio skit. We sponsored a very successful dance in April. The big event of the year was, ns always, the junior-Senior Prom. The re- freshments zxnd the beautifully decorated auditorium were never equalled by any- thing previous. The Prom closed the book on our junior Activities. l25l The Colonel I i261 211112145 MAIIGUIQRITE AIIsIxInIz Loulss Axsns TIIELIIA AI.1'IzI:II NAIIINI-: AsIIwI:LI. CAIII. We, the Annual Staff, have endeavored, as every stall has during the past years, to put forth the best publication in the history of the school. We reached our goal in soliciting advertisements, and went over the top in our campaign of selling annuals. After this, assignments were given out and wc began on the real work of getting the yearbook ready for publication. The staff expresses its gratitude to the Senior Class for its help in soliciting advertisements, to our sponsors for tlIeir patience and understanding, and to the faculty and student body for their loyal support and interest. iVe publish this annual with the supreme hope that it is as good or better than those before it, and hope that you will enjoy it as much as we have enjoyed having a part in it. r' ,wiv V' fgrww Q XA! 'l'hc squad was composed of six- teen girls, only four of whom had ever played varsity hall before, Carper, who started the season as a guard, switched to forward later, Sprinkle was probably the forward most feared and closest guarded by opposing teams. Akers, captain, and Crockett, both forwards, played excellent ball as did Johnston, an ever dependable center-guard. Divers probably showed the greatest improvement of any player during the season. Sarver proved au excellent forward and shows promise of becoming an even greater one. Johnston, Divers, A kers, and Sarver are all new to varsity basketball. Wigginton proved herself a strong and worthy adversary to any forward she guarded. The substitutes must not he overlooked. It was due to their loyalty and hard work that the team could be developed into n winning one, Tltough they seldom, and some never, had a chance to play in :t game they gave the regulars stifl' competition in practice. Eight of this year's squad will graduate and eight will return next year. Louise Akers has proved :A loyal and very cooperative captain and Peggy Owen has done an excellentjob as manager of the team.
